Program ranking?

Hey all

Is there any program ranking or is that something thats not done for CRNA school?

Also, are there ones considered "prestigious" in the industry or is there little competition between programs?

There are rankings done, just like for any other type of program.

Last rankings I know of are from 2003 in US News I believe and that is only a top 5 or top 10 list.

yeah, the rankings are probably on this board somewhere, just do a search. i remember the army program was ranked the highest, and that is all I remember. most will tell you not to look at the rankings when choosing a school, because they are pretty much meaningless, and the process of evaluating crna programs is so flawed it is unbelievable. us news does a terrible job in ranking the top crna schools. i've been told it consists of the program directors evaluation and statistics.

All in all, you get the same certification no matter what school you go to, and that is the Bottom Line.

Here's the listing, if you don't want to spend the 10 bucks to buy the magazine just for the anesthesia schools (which I was obviously obsessive enough to do :))

1 virginia commonwealth

2 army program in texas

3 navy nurse corps and rush

5 albany medical college

6 duke, oakland university, university of pittsburg, and university of texas health science center in houston

10 baylor, case wester reserve, georgetown, cal state fullerton, samuel merritt, SUNY buffalo, university of cincinnati, UNC wake forest

Is this the 2003 rankings or a more recent version?

From what i hear (from someone who was involved with the ranking process in the past), it is pretty much a political thing and a popularity contest. I hear it's not even based on facilities, instructors, or pass rates. Is there anyone who can have any input on whether this is true or not?

I have heard the same thing.

This is apparently also true of medical school and law school rankings. All political and little else

The anesthesia rankings in particular are from 2003, though some other nsg specialties and other types of grad rankings in this years Best Grad Schools are more recent.

It does tell you how the rankings are done in the magazine...basically you guys are right...they're essentially ranked on the basis of peer review, and the magazine mentions nothing about pass rates, quality of education/clinicals, and certainly doesn't mention any kind of input by students in the ranking process (typical and intensely irritating!).

Those are still 2003 rankings. The process doesn't have anything to do with true quality of education. It IS very political and also based on things like the degrees the faculty have, how many texts they've published, # of simulators, # of faculty, # of students, etc. The #1 school is the one that lets you in and is right for your needs. My school is not on that list ( think it's 20 something) but I can guarantee you that I am and will be every bit as good as any SRNA that graduates from VCU, which IS a great school I'm sure. It's all about what you put into it.

Not this again...What Sandman1 says about rankings is right on. They are absolutely useless...totally...end of story. They once ranked a nurse anesthesia school in the top 10 that hadn't even began their first class! It is a popularity ranking by Deans of Nursing and Program Directors.
