Our on call nurses make roughly 90k/annually. They work 7 days on/ 7 days off. (m-m 5p-8 week nights and then the full weekend, with a back up nurse on Sat/Sun from 8-5). They also get paid mileage for all visits. There are OCCASIONAL admissions on the weekends .. depending on hospital discharge/imminence. The only scheduled visits are for active patients, wound, med or symptom follow ups- or even a 24 hour follow up to a Friday admission. If the on call nurse works outside of their 40 hours (for example - takes a night on their week off- they get a flat rate- to be on call-of over $100 for a week night, then gets paid $45ishh/hour for any visits they may make- the high pay is for incentive and is only used really for shift coverage).
We also have admission nurses during the week (10a-7p) to ease the burden for both RNCMs and On Call Team. (The late hours are because of those families that need later admits, and who ever has an admission at 8am?! LOL.)
On call is a tough position because, you should be able to efficiently respond to calls for sx MGMT, deaths, etc. and some nights you have nothing to do. Being out in the field for 8 hours a night feels weird for on call, but Case Managers do it all day, and it is a full time salaried position. So, you kind have to weigh the pros and cons.
If you feel you are being taken advantage of, maybe say something or find a company that is properly staffed. I've worked for companies (usually large and corporate) that do this to their on call nurses, plus they have some "productivity" goal they have to meet. Those companies end up burning out their nurses and running through staff.
Hope this helps ?
