Wow! A little harsh. Not greedy at all. I suppose I should have mentioned that I've been working for a few months and that my current job pays more (and is W2)... so I'd be taking a pay cut. What I was questioning more was the idea of being in a contract and being 1099 (neither was told to me until after my third interview so I think I have a right to think about it and ask questions since I'm not quite sure why they weren't more transparent about it from the start.) this post was supposed to be a request for advice from someone who has been in a similar situation in the aesthetic nursing industry, not some useless Judge Judy opinion board from someone having a bad day.

I have been offered a position as an aesthetic RN which is what I've always wanted to do (side note: I am a new grad). Once I was offered the job I found out that the position will be 1099 and they will require a contract (which at the moment they don't know how long they will ask of me to stay there.. they are "drafting the contract"). On top of all of this, the position is also part-time to start (this part I DID know). I don't know what to do. This is something I've always wanted to do. It's also very close to my home. However, I'm not thrilled about the idea of being 1099, part-time, AND with a contract! I could handle a few of those things, but in total, it seems like a large commitment on my end. I'm curious if anyone has been in a similar situation, what would you suggest? Also, are the commissions and bonuses as great as my potential employer is making them sound? Side note: the pay/hour is not that great either. I kind of thought I'd be starting higher if I were to be 1099. Other side note: I'm married and have a baby, so I need to look out for more than just myself. Is this position wise?

Hi Gnurse, Yes, my monitor told me:( I don't know how strictly it's currently being enforced. Also, my nurse support group facilitator told me that she was told further explanation and "more changes" are to come soon!

Hi GNurse! Thank you for the insight! I am a new grad (and haven't even begun working yet) and the reason I am on probation is because of 2 DUIs I had before I was even in nursing school or knew I wanted to be a nurse. One is 14 years old and one is 6 years old. Very upsetting to have to pay for these crimes all over again especially since I wasn't even a nurse when they happened. Anyhow, I don't drink and I am a totally different person than I was years ago (not that the BRN cares about that) so I'm hopeful that after a year I can put together a compelling argument to be relieved of this insane testing and groups! Thank you. They have new rules since the 1st of this year and you can no longer just pick up an extra aa meeting in place of your nurse support group. So basically you can't go anywhere for more than 6 days.

Hello, I was just curious if any nurse in CA have been able to successfully modify their probation at 1 year to eliminate drug and alcohol testing? Before everyone jumps down my throat, I'm not asking because I want to go out drinking, the reason I'm hoping to have this done is because the testing fees are way too expensive for me and my family to afford. Also, and almost more importantly, this aspect of my probation is prohibiting me from traveling to certain parts of the country where we have family and there is no First Lab testing site (Kauai, HI).... trust me, I asked, and there is no lab there that first lab works with. So anyhow, I'm hoping for a positive success story or two from CA nurses only. Thank you

Yes, I still managed to get a job offer here in CA within a couple of months of getting my probationary license. I learned to just be upfront about it at the end of the first interview.

Since these both occurred as a minor, do you even have to disclose it? Wouldn't the files have been destroyed once you turned 18?

I'm not sure where you are located. But if you are in CA, I can assure you that your license will be initially denied and then they will eventually give it to you after you enter an agreement with them to be on probation for an a few years (usually 3). This will have serious implications on where you can work, you may or may not have to do drug and alcohol testing, outpatient rehab, AA, and nurse support groups. CA BRN will not tell you all this if you call them and tell them your situation and ask their opinion on whether you should pursue a nursing degree. They are absolutely NOT transparent about this. It's maddening! I too have 2 DUIs... both from before I ever even started nursing school or even knew I wanted to be a nurse. It absolutely stinks that you have to pay for your crimes all over again. What proof do you need to show that you were in Mexico? Do they ask for your stamped passport? Or just travel itinerary and boarding passes?

I don't know how the FL BON works but here in CA, you can get different info every time you talk to a different person. I had a few "issues" from my past and called the BRN before I started school to see if it would be a problem when it came time to apply for my license. I was told it would not and that I should continue with my schooling. Fast forward 2 years, and my license was initially denied based on these past incidents. After nearly a year of fighting them, I finally got my license but it is a "probationary license" and as a new grad, its very difficult to find a job. I really wish the CA BRN would have been more transparent when I first called them. I would have sincerely reconsidered going through nursing school. I would recommend calling a few different times and talking to different people... and get their names! Hope it all works out for you.
