Here are some highlights from recent maternity-related surveys that pertain to nursing. 1 in 4 nurses dislike asking mothers for circumcision consent. Mothers are asked an average of 8 times if they want their newborn son circumcised; they perceive this as coercion to say yes. A third of mothers were told that circumcision (an unnecessary, elective surgery) was recommended or required. Informing parents with the pros and cons of circumcision did not change the decision to circumcise. Mothers who intended to take their newborn son home intact were almost twice as likely to chose circumcision after being asked for consent.
