reply to rnwriter post 29: you say take the time to teach them. you're not going to teach a bpd anything because they aren't going to learn due to the nature of their disorder. that would be like taking time to teach somebody with a low intelligence calculus.

in our hosp you have to do a body search before you are allowed out onto the unit. they have to take off their clothes at the same time covering as much of their body as possible so staff can check for scars, bruises, contraband, ect. they search pockets and shoes ect.

i've learned a lot. i learned it's a developmental disorder, some people take it seriously and think it's real (unlike in my part of the country), it's how a person deals with the world according to their own unfortunate upbringing, and that there are people who actually care about this population (unlike in my part of the country). it's so complicated and ingrained it's very difficult to treat successfully. the mental health system does the best it can. there was a lot of good info in this thread.

i guess i have nothing else to add. i think it would be good to hear from a nurse who grew up in africa though. or any other culture where they don't have this.

i understand that millions are spent on it unsuccessfully. where i work the things that have been said in this thread are not taught. we are taught they are self centered, ect. one of my co workers was talking how a bpd was wanting attention for cutting on herself. the patient reported this and my boss told my co worker - you NEVER tell a bpd they're trying to get attention because they will do anything to prove you wrong. this statement tells me that bpd are nothing more than people who live to play games. you can't cure people like that. just like you can't cure people who like heavy metal music. wasting millions of dollars trying to cure them is ridiculous. my ideas are aimed at the point of the prob - go to an enviroment where you can't play games and maybe you'll learn you can live without playing games. this isn't an illness - it's a lifestyle. a lifestyle of playing games. and as for talking about the money - people were saying it's inhumane or not empathetic - if donald trump has gold furniture does that mean he's inhumane or not empahtetic becasue there are people starving to death and he buys gold furniture instead of feeding them? don't call people inhumane or empathetic when people starve to death and others drive suvs and live in large air conditioned houses.

like i said millions spent unsuccessfully on complicated treatments. let's say you have to catch a bus and you arrive at the bus station 5 minutes late and miss it. you learn that tommorrow you must get there early in order to catch it. or as dr. phil mcgraw said - if we can't figure this out in 2 days one of us is a fool. "borderline" are surrounded by people who enable them. if everybody and eveything (like mental health system) just dropped them then they would learn new ways. well if that's inhumane thinking than is not sending all your extra income that you use on vacations ect to starving people inhumane? remember at the end of the movie schindler's list he was upset because he thought if he sold his watch he could have saved another life.

i have friends from africa and they impress me. the african friends i have that work at the psych hosp who all say they don't have these type of disorders in their country come from big citites and are educated - they aren't from 3rd world countries. "borderlines" don't kill themselves they treaten to kill themselves or try in such a fashion that they will be saved - for example in front of somebody or tell somebody who knows how to call 911. if you truely want to kill yourself you will do it you won't threaten it.

i guess this thread has run out of steam. and our country spends millions to unsucessfully treat "borderline" every year. but i guess we have money to waste otherwise we wouldn't.

is there abuse in his home? some kids act out because they are immatating their parents behavior.

one of our state hosp actually has a unit for borderline only. as for borderline being sensitive about watching video of themselves the therapist can start off by saying with your disorder you may react by being over sensitive so we can deal with that along the way. and to meryteapot - there's nothing restrictive about going to africa to get better. when somebody goes off to college in another place are they being restricted?

by law if you release a stalker from a psych hosp you have to let their victim know. i'm wondering if you're allowed to let the local humane society know that this guy is around? i would think this guy would be sent to state or strongly sedated. don't most serial killers start off being cruel to animals?

the goal of mental health is to keep people in the least restrictive enviroment possible. i would think locking up borderline would delay it's development even more. the best treatment is life itself not being locked up. another thing i just thought of is vidio tape people with their permission and have them watch it. then a professional can exam the video with the patient and explain how they are coping.

i view things as simplistic because you don't have all the time in the world. you only spend so much time alive. when people make things like borderline so detailed and in depth you are wasting time or i should say you run out of time. as dr. phil mcgraw says about therapy if we can't figure this out in 2 days then one of us is a fool.

no matter what you believe about bpd the tittle of the thread is alternate ways of treating bpd. one of my co workers at the hosp was beaten, starved, and molested as a child and she is perfectly normal. maybe the key to succesfully treating bpd is to understand how some people are abused as children and grow up to be normal. what can we learn from that population. my co worker says she knew God loved her and she always felt sorry for her parents and even though she was brutalized as a child she says she was a happy child. and as i have said before if child abuse is the prob then it should be renamed child abuse syndrome. as i said in my work culture borderline means manipulative drama kings/queens. how would health care workers react to the label child abuse syndrome? not as bad my guess. part of the prob is we as a nation let down abused children by not punishing child abuser hard enough. for example in vietnam if you molest a child they kill you. we are far to lienient (can't spell) on child abusers. at the long term care facility for the chronically mentally ill that i work at one of the residents is a convicted child molester. i find it odd that management goes to great extremes to make sure he is treated good and his rights are not violated.

my views are different from most of the posts. i learned my views from my workplace. i guess the culture of my workplace views borderline as nothing more than maniputlative drama kings/queens.

somebody who wants to spend money to pioneer research in alternate treatments for boderline personality disorder. now excuse me, i'm going to go watch meerkat manor on the animal planet channel.

if somebody said to me you can go live in a third world country for (?) six months (?) and they would take care of my expenses and responsibilities here i would jump at the opportunity. i think it would be great to experience what others do. the idea of sending a disordered person to another enviroment is not a punishment but a development opportunity - just as it would be for any of us. and i would still like to hear other people's ideas of alternate treatments - all's i hear other people talk about is traditional treatment.

to rnwriter post #29 - yes that is exactly what i'm saying. and as far as making nasty comments about patients - cancer is very difficult to treat and sometimes not curable - but even though cancer is difficult you still don't make nasty comments about people with cancer. that's because you know it's not their fault. when a practitioner makes nasty comments about a diseased person that means the practitioner holds that patient responsible for their disorder. we had one sad pt who was sent to state who had cut both arms so much they were nothing but 99% red cut marks on her arms. somehow she also got razor blades on the unit and swollowed them. i can't help but think what would happen to this person if she were dropped in a third world country where nobody would have the time or money to pay attention to her. how is it inhumane to put somebody in an enviroment where they get better? a place where people have to put all their energy into keeping themselves and their kids alive. and don't have any energy left over to take care of somebody who says they want to die.wouldn't we ALL be changed by going into such an enviroment?

i think it was the last thread i did i talked about how a psychiatrist said about a revolving door boderline at the hosp "this is one of those patients you want to euathanize". somebody said well he was just venting. have you ever heard an oncologist say about a revolving door chemo therapy patient - this is one of those patients you want to euthanize? i doubt it. the fact that he would make such a statement shows that he thinks of this particular kind of patient in a bad way. and does anybody else have alternate ways to treat borderline patients. and to mercyteapot - once they're in africa or the amazon then they will live like the people there do.

i thought this thread was dedicated to alternate ways of treating borderline personality disorder? i guess my views are shaped by where i work. we get the worst of the worst. we are a waiting room for the state hospital. the state hospital is no picnic. in fact you might say the state hospital is like a made up third world except they are locked up and not free.

warzprayer says they have only seen one bpd helped by traditional therapy. so to mercyteapot - why are unsuccesfull traditional therapies paid for over and over again? why not spend money on something new - that might work? somebody talked about child abuse. if child abuse is the prob then it should be labeled child abuse syndrome - not borderline personality disorder. i think if a patient is labeled as child abuse syndrome they are going to get better help. people naturally want to help somebody suffering from child abuse syndrome. and as far as treating child abuse - remember the movie i think it was called stand by me about a principal in philadelphia who went into a bad school and told the kids you may come from a slum but i'm not going to allow you to behave like you come from one. i'm not joking about africa or the amazon. i came to this conclusion after making several friends from africa. and let me remind people again ADDRESS THE SUBJECT NOT THE MEMBER MAKING THE POST. THIS IS TO DISCUSS AND DEBATE THE SUBJECT NOT PUT EACH OTHER DOWN.

i'm not saying bpd are manipulative drama queens - that is what i read in the forums and hear at work. i'm saying anybody not just bpd would be a manipulative drama king/queen if they're locked up. who would pay for it? it's cheaper to live in other places than here - so you would save money. how do you prevent it? well how do they prevent it in other countries? they prevent it by not acknowleding it and not paying healthcare to treat it. one member talked about child abuse. child abuse is HORRIBLE but as wynona (can't spell) judd said about being raped as a teenager - i don't define myself as a victim.
