  1. You're right its no ones responsibility but OP's however the idea is that yeah I **** up and I'm trying to fix it, I'm letting you know now so you can make moves to keep your train running smoothly. Does that make sense? Its kinda hard to put in writing So letting my boss know early that this may be an issue gives them more time to find another coworker (who's number I might not have) to cover so the whole team isn't just down a person. Its a move with good intentions that just doesn't translate well or always work out with healthcare specifically
  2. And in a perfect world we'd all always pull that off without a hitch
  3. I think OP was under the impression the calling ahead thing is supposed to be helpful. While they try to make arrangements to borrow a car or get a ride or swap shifts with coworkers they have numbers for nothing is set in stone so the supervisor or manager has a full 24 hours to make calls on their end to see if anyone can potientally cover a shift if the OP can't move her mountain. I doubt OP could afford a taxi or uber 15 miles in a snow storm I recently learned this is frowned upon, not sure why but it's better to just call last minute with an emergency
  4. Honestly, I don't get everyone chewing you out. I'm the same age as you and was recently in almost this exact situation, my tires aren't bald but my car is an old Cadillac from my uncle that simply doesn't handle well in the snow/ice, I called in 24 hours in advance and talked to my shift sup and let him know that I may not be able to make it but I'll see what I can do on my end (long story short, no one would give me their car and the weather was not forgiving and I ended up calling off about 10 hours before my shift). So trust me when I say I understand, but also your manager has to make things work best they could for them and if that means cutting off the student worker for missing a shift that's what they'll do. Do I think you were unprepared or irresponsible? No, you did everything in your own power to try to make it work and it sucks you got fired but your life is worth more than $20ish. Shake it off, chalk it up to a lesson learned and move on to another job maybe one closer or at least more understanding of your current situation.
  5. Hello! I'm currently in the phlebotomist program at my school and I expressed to my family how scared I was to stick an actual person since dummy arms are nothing like the real thing so my mother in law decided to gift me a kit filled with (unused) needles, tubes, gauze and alcohol pads. I'm super thankful for it and I have family members and friends willing to let me stick them for practice but what am I supposed to do with bloody needles and tubes? I know they have to be disposed of in a particular manner but is there a number I call to get it picked up since I'm doing this out my home? Should I just take everything with me to work (I work at a hospital) and get rid of it there? It'd really suck if I couldn't get good practice because I can't throw them away properly hahaha
  6. You admitted that they speak English when they communicate with patients or need to pass on information, and I assume from that the majority of their speaking is English except for at the nurses' station where they slip into their native language casually so I'm having a really hard time seeing the problem here. I speak Spanish fluently but no matter how well I speak it English will always be more comfortable and what I would prefer to to use. Being truly upset over this seems dramatic and silly, you're probably only going to use their conversation as white noise/tune them out so what's the point?
