  1. Again, I didn't "not attempt to get to work". Feel free to read other comments or the original post for reference. Nor did I say it was anyone's problem, I am capable of accepting that things happen and sometimes those things stink. I apologize for being "entitled" for thinking walking 15 miles in the snow is a bad idea for literally anyone. We can't all be Superman I guess.
  2. I am not sure where I would go and safely stay before the storm if there isn't somewhere for me to go? I did not slam coworkers for not taking a shift. I didn't expect anyone to unless they were already on campus and willing. Nor did I even want to ask around because I don't want someone else driving in bad weather, not just myself. But I asked around just in case. If ou had read previous comments, I did not call off. Nor did I "not even try", which was also in my original post. I think trying to drive there and not making it out of your neighborhood is an effort. Trying to be honest about being worried about your situation and see if your employer has any ideas or any way to help you to drom point A to point B is not calling out.
  3. I actually do babysit when I can! Usually weekends and a weeknight here and there when I have the time. Since it's usually just date nights or similar things it makes me flexible and good, easy money. I work a lot during the summer at my office job, so I'll be much better off once school is done for the year. I try to limit working during the semester, since I'd much rather get up earlier and go straight to class after rather than be out later than I already am. I don't get home until 8-9 PM every weeknight and then have limited time for schoolwork, so I wouldn't want to limit that time further. I don't mind not having a lot of money during school time. It's annoying, sure, but if I'm already struggling to balance everything I don't want to add on and see my grades suffer!
  4. If something had happened to me and I had to go to a hospital somehow, I don't think any nurse would be telling me that I should've made it anyway. That is far from the compassionate personality nurses that I know have
  5. That is absolutely bonkers.. I am not a Navy Seal. I do not think $25 is worth walking that far in that type of weather, and I don't believe most commenters on this website would walk for 5 hours in weather like that either. Considering my family and I were even numb from shoveling the driveway, perhaps walking isn't a viable option. Again, like I have said before, I *cannot afford* these things. If I had money, I really wouldn't be driving a car like mine.
  6. Luckily I don't plan on living anywhere with snow in the future; it's just not something I can control at this point in my life. When I begin an actual career and have real hours and pay, obviously a 4-wheel drive car is the plan, regardless of where I live! My area and school are actual farmland, so there isn't any motels etc. In the future if there is something like that close by my work, that will be very useful for sure.
  7. You are suggesting that I walk 15 miles in the dark in a snow storm? When there are people driving that could very easily hit me if they lose control of their car somehow?
  8. I don't understand how those are simply just excuses. All I did was explain and answer questions that were asked.. The car is safe when not attempting to drive in a foot of snow. I don't drive when there is poor weather because it is not safe. Prioritizing my schoolwork over making money and making do with what I have at the moment is not "excuses".
  9. Okay, thank you. This was the discussion I was trying to have. I've never had to do that before, and so I had no idea what to say and thought advance notice was more helpful. Essentially what I said was that I am unsure what will happen but will try to figure something out in some shape or form. I didn't say that I could not come in, because I was waiting to see if the snow would actually be what the new said (sometimes it only ends up snowing 2 inches when they say 8! Haha) I made it clear that I was trying to talk to everyone, I messaged about 60 people which probably annoyed them, but I would've rather tried than just not bothered. I made sure to keep the driveway clear so my car could at least get out of the garage, but I can't plow the roads unfortunately. I asked if there was any way that I could be helped, as I was running out of options, and was just told "figure it out". If I had gotten stuck in a ditch or gotten into a crash, I wouldn't be able to make it either, and would be stuck waiting 12 hours for help (this actually happened to my father a few years ago). That would be much worse than this I suppose. Which I did, just not in the way that would've benefited us both. It happens and my life isn't over,
  10. My parents do pay for the insurance which I am lucky for, but I do pay for my gas (which is why my car takes me to school and back and that's about it). No, there is no public transportation, I live in a rather rural area. The only public transportation near me is for the university, but it only goes around the university, not elsewhere.
  11. I really just wanted to know if there was anything else I could have said or done, for example calling in sick etc rather than trying to give advanced notice. Getting new tires, etc. wasn't something that could be done in the moment, but I do know that sometimes health care professionals are in the same situation with weather and cannot make it in, this was asking if anything I did was just wrong. I apologize if my story came out the wrong way, communication online isn't the same as in person.
  12. I didn't purchase my car, it was given to me by a relative, which was quite lucky since my parents weren't able to get me one. Obviously at 17 and needing transportation to get to your waitressing job, I took it with no complaints because a car is a car! If it was my option to choose I most definitely would've chosen something safer in poor weather. I work at on office so the hours are the regular 8-5 hours, and my classes are all afternoon/evening, so I had to make sure my mornings were clear so that I could still work. I work the max hours I can, going in when it opens and leaving to make it to class on time, so I can't add on. trust me I would if I could, 9 hours isn't cutting it!! However I don't have time to get all my coursework done as is and am scrambling to do as much as I can between classes as possible, so it's probably better off since school should be #1. But yes, you work 9:30 to whatever time the morning shift ends (can range from 6-8) but you only get paid and are able to document 9:30 pm-12:00 am. Coincidently my NP told me to consider quitting sout 2 days before haha
  13. I understand that people on here care about the well-being of others. Some commenters have said to get a new car. Unfortunately I cannot afford tires, even used ones. I wish I could obviously, that would be awesome, but I have to make do with what I have for now. I chose to stay off the roads for the sake of myself, and anyone else who was driving, because getting into a crash with a human or a tree is not helpful to anyone. I did try to find alternate transportation, but seeing as that my only options were my parents, who said they were not going anywhere, I was kind of stuck in regards to that. I don't think an Uber would even have picked me up, because damaging their car would hurt their job since it depends on their vehicle. Nor do I wish to put my life in the hands of a stranger during a storm, and as a rule I never go into Ubers alone anyways. I've encountered too many creeps to do that. If I cannot afford to go out to dinner, I don't consider myself able to purchase tires. They may not be new but $100 is comparable to $1000 in my financial situation.
  14. I try to always be very honest about everything; I thought that being honest would be better than lying, but I suppose maybe bending the truth is the better option here.
  15. Also, if it were work in a hospital I would have the option to come in early. However, it was an apartment. It's not my job to come in 24 hours earlier while someone else is on the clock.
