Midwest, yes, I'm looking for general family medicine. I have 8 years experience but only one in the family clinic setting. I spent 7 years doing the H &P's and medical management at a 50 bed psychiatric hospital. There I wasn't allowed to do any procedures so there's a lot of procedural type things I just haven't done. The last year i've been in family practice but again there's a number of things that I feel like I haven't done. I've never sutured. I wasn't allowed then it just hasn't really come up this past year. So I feel unconfident in that particular realm. though I feel fine with other general management, diagnostics etc. and I've seen all age groups this past year. For 7 years I saw 18 and up because that's what our hospital admitted. I would love to have greater control of my schedule and not have to worry about pt numbers, or going to speak to the rotary club or the area development partnership as part of our community reach and to help build my practice. I just liked it when patients showed up and I saw them and I wasn't expected to go beat the bushes or try and learn how to do botox, or a thousand other things to try and drum up business. I'm just not at the point in my life where I want to do that.

Ok WOW. I'm sooo glad I found someone, anyone who could give me some idea about this. I don't know anyone who travels. I get free insurance, vacation time (at least 2 weeks but can get more if needed, some flexible sick time, CME and DEA paid and I work 4 days a week and holidays. I'm salaried but i definitely make less than $50 now, but with the above benefits. We start around 830 have an hour for lunch that I usually spend closing out morning charts then my last scheduled pt is 430, but sometimes they squeeze someone in around 445 if they walk in an are really sick. I'm considering the travel b/c it would make it much easier to be able to take time out for clinical for a post master certificate in psych that I hope to start in the spring. I'm trying to take my time looking into it. I guess I'm just a bit afraid I might not have enough experience, especially in the procedures area. I really didn't do procedures on my first job which I was at for 7 years. Considering taking a procedure update course though. Any thoughts on what procedures are a must when traveling.

travel NPAPRN is that rate for acute care or family. maybe that's why this girl keeps calling me. because she thinks she can get me to come for $50 an hour. She was calculating what would equal my present pay if I had to pay my own insurance, cme, etc. I told her If I wanted to just break even I'd stay where I was because I was pretty sure there'd be plenty of incidental costs that just figuring hourly wage to equal what I make now after deducting what insurance costs didn't make sense for me. Pretty sure I'll at least have to pay someone to upkeep my yard at my home while I'm gone. I'm sure i'd have more incidental cost. I'm so on the fence about this. I might have to do it if I decide to get my psych np because I'd have to be able to not work for a chunk of time while I do clinical. I guess I'm just nervous about crazy work situations, bad housing, etc. have your experiences been pretty positive?? I'm worried too because i've worked at clinics where we don't do al lot of procedures, just doesn't come up so i'm worried i might be in a deficit.

I worked with a Psych np that left outpatient to come to inpatient because of the patient load in outpatient. She like the time allowed for inpatient but the pay was much less I'm sure. Presently in family practice I may see anywhere from 15 to 25 a day. They'd like me to see more if more patients would come i'd have to. However, i know the pt load numbers in psych and family aren't really comparable. one of my former co-workers works with a PACT team and he goes out and sees patient where they are, home, street where ever. he really likes it, but not many of those type jobs are available.

I've been considering traveling as an NP but so far the companies I've spoken with want to offer 54 and 57. One told me they could never get me 60 an hour. Anything less than 60 an hour is a pay cut for me in the long run because i'd have to pay my own insurance, cme, etc. Can anyone weigh in on these pay scales. I'm Family NP, looking for family practice. i've got a year in the family practice clinic setting and seven year experience as on sit medical provider at an in patient psychiatric hospital. Is the 60 to 75 an hour for acute care?? No sense in me doing this if I'm losing money.

christine, I'm actually a family np looking to add my psych NP. I've looked at st. joseph but wasn't able to find the cost per credit. do you know what it is? I worked for 7 years as the medical provider at an in-patient psychiatric hospital. I'm about one year now into a family practice job and I'm really thinking I'd like to get back to psych and work as a practitioner. I have several friends who work as psych NP's and they seem satisfied. I think in some places it might be initially difficult to find what your looking for but when you do the pay is usually better than for family. I'd love to hear back from you. I'm considering spring admission.
