New Nurse/IPN
I blew at work a 0.08. Got terminated. Only 3 months experience. Is IPN even worth it?

PRN Position
Hi guys, So I currently work fulltime and go to school fulltime for my ADN. Its evening/weekend with class MW 5-8 and clinical Saturday all day. I did this last semester and was successful but my job is getting more intense and school will be harder. I decided to start looking for PRN jobs and currently have a job offer in hand for a position as a PRN tech for Baycare (a highly ranked hospital system in tampa/st pete). I hate leaving fulltime work as I wont be saving much money but I think the extra time would be valuable. Is anyone currently working PRN as a tech while undertaking school? How's it going? I'm in an ADN program so I was thinking that I would pretty much have a job lined up after I finished. Just looking for some thoughts.

Being Gay and a Male Nursing Student
Adding more to this thread. I am a gay male but am one of those people who doesn't exemplify the flamboyant gay stereotype. My RN school friends were questioning it but it wasn't a dead giveaway. This is true in my everyday life. Regardless, this has never been a topic of discussion until I went out with my classmates outside of school. They didn't care one way or the other. Additionally, I was very close with my professor last semester and he was an older straight man. Also work as a tech in a hospital and have great relationships with everyone (guys and girls included). I only see our orientation being an issue in places where we are not as accepted (rural areas, south).

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
New but not new to teaching. Just ended up being independent study. We were all learning from the book. Very fair grader so we all passed. Could have been much worse. I know mornings had it really much worse.

Idk I think the morning/evening have it different. Our days are weekend. Usually Saturday 6:30-4:30. But like I said, one of the groups got moved to Sunday this semester. The time you get out really depends on your clinical instructor. Expect a 10 hour day. 2. Hours again are 6:30-4:30.

Don't buy anything until you're admitted. We all got our scrubs from the same place (allabourscrubs) before we started.

Our class has not had the best relationship with the administration so I'm a little bias but it's been disorganized and a mess for us. But we still have everyone pushing through. Mornings and afternoons have had it better.

1. You have no say in your clinical site. They told us we would be in same place all throughout the program but that is not the case. My clinical group stayed the same but we are in Florida Hospital Tampa now. We were in Carrollwood last semester. And the south bay kids got moved to Sunday at TGH while they originally started Saturday at South Bay. 2. Not in my class but that's due to time. Most of the evening/weekend works so we study at work or elsewhere alone. I never studied in a group. 3. You have to wear your scrubs to everything now. I went once to open lab without my scrubs and got reamed for it. 4. You can go to open lab whenever there is an instructor listed there. The lab times are posted on the schedule. Usually open till 8 pm on most days.

I thought orientation was very lax. I don't remember too much about it. They talk about the program, how to study, resources if you are struggling, info from current students. We got to meet our professor. I think we all took our drug test as well. Lunch was 45 min and I got something off campus. Easy day.

For sure. Our class was in a daze because most of us were walking a line we felt no one had crossed recently. It's doable. You will be fine. The only advice I have is get a NCLEX FUNDAMENTALS book. And see how the questions are asked. The RNs at my hospital gave me theirs and it helped (100% helped) for HESI.

Thank you! Its not entirely stress free as we are all pushing through the online pharmacology class. But it's definitely a nice "break". Never feel nervous to ask the upper level students Questions. We were in your shoes. And you will be in ours. It's a difficult program but we are all here for the same reason. Good luck!

Love your questions. Hopefully more will see the answers and gain perspective. 4. We had 1 professor for all lecture exams. You will have another professor (or the same professor for clinicals). For clinical, your first four weeks are in the simulation lab. There, all professors for your section are present. Basically we all did a summary of lecture that we had the week prior and then we were split into our clinical groups so we could meet our clinical instructors. Your clinical grade is pass/fail and it's based on your performance in the hospital and the care plans you turn in. This doesn't affect the letter grade you receive in lecture unless you fail clinical. You CANNOT miss clinical. Ever. If you miss you have to have a great reason for missing and you WILL make it up. 5. Lab..Lab is weird. You have to have 15 "lab" hours to pass the semester. This means you have to go to open lab throughout the semester to gain these hours. This is separate from clinical and lecture. It's essentially open lab where you practice the skills you learned and the instructor there will check you off. The rule of thumb. 7.5 hours the first half and 7.5 hours the latter half of the semester. 6. I used a planner but by the end the schedule was routine so it didn't help me much. We had an exam every 1.5 weeks. So once that exam ended, the studying for the next started. My advice don't dwell and move on studying for the next. 7. No site changes. I heard this only changes for Labor/Delivery/Mental health third semester. 8. HESI...lol. You take a practice Hesi midterm and a final HESI. The final HESI for us counted as our last regular exam worth the same as a regular exam. Most of us did fine. 9. I had a bachelors already so I already had my routine as I worked fulltime for my BS in bio. I had very little free time as I earned my A. It was difficult but Worth it. Time management is key. If 3/4s of my class could manage working fulltime and passing RN with an A or B then anyone can. I've never been in a room full of such dedicated students. We were all VERY stressed, but we have stuck together. 10. No. I did not and most of us did not. Take them over the summer semesters if you have any other stuff needed. orientation was easy. We learned about the program and such. It is hard but it's a great journey. Enjoy and ask away if you have any other questions.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2017
Question 1: I can't give an answer to this because it was not available for students starting spring. I heard about it and it seems like a great option. However, the word is HCC is opening a BSN program so this might be going out the door (again speculation) 2. Everyone is Elsevier. BUY the text and e book option (if you can). I had access to my textbooks everywhere. I work fulltime so I read the chapters at work before coming to class (my first exam had 10 chapters...). Price was 850 with tax. 3. No one dropped out of my section but Joe is very fair. He grades his exam like NCLEX. Again this is very professor specific, so I can't say how DM mornings or afternoons are. Ask away. We had to take it by stride because our professor just started teaching here this semester. Which sucks for us because we are also getting a brand new professor again.
