  1. Is it possible to switch to a home unit so you can make those connections and feel acclimated to one patient population? Side eyeing the hospital you’re working at for putting a new grad in float pool. My hospital won’t even allow new grads to float from their home unit for the first year. A new grad in float pool not only sounds extremely unfair, but dangerous as well. If if you decide to switch employers/hospitals, I’d suggest looking for a magnet hospital to work for. You’re less likely to be put in that type of situation again at a magnet facility.
  2. RN Residency Program | Seton Healthcare Family Austin This is the page you should be navigating off of for the residency positions. Hope this is helpful.
  3. I already accepted another position at DCMC, but was wondering if anyone heard anything from the PICU? That was where I really wanted to be, but knew it was a long shot.
  4. When I spoke with the recruiter I asked if there are any residency spots left at DCMC. She said most have already been filled by internal transfers, but she is still making a few calls throughout the month. Hoping yall hear soon! At least half my cohort has applied at DCMC and myself and another girl are the only two that have heard anything that I'm aware of. Several people have already accepted jobs at Dell Seton and Seton main with the hopes of transfering to DCMC in a year or two. We've been told that's a good way to get into the children's hospital if you don't get in as a new grad.
  5. The interview went great! Interview ended at 1300 and I had an offer by 1730! Keep at it, and don't give up. The unit is an inpatient pediatric rehab/medsurg. I really wanted PICU, but this is a really good fit, too. I can always transfer to PICU in time. I think this is going to be a good spot for me to start my nursing career and really hone my skills before being dropped into critical care. I have lots of home health rehab experience and was a pediatric recreation therapist before nursing school. I was told that was what made my resume stand out at the open house. By the way, even though I have an offer, the website STILL says submitted for the status of my applications! Ridiculous
  6. My applications all still say submitted, too, even though I have an interview on Thursday with Dell children's. I have a friend with two interviews this week at Seton main, and her applications still say submitted. Another friend who interviewed at Dell Seton in the ICU and her apps still say submitted. They aren't updating the website with our status. So don't worry too much about what the website says. Also, there seems to be some confusion in the thread, and as a local, I thought I'd try to clear it up a bit. Dell children's Medical Center = DCMC Dell Seton = Dell Seton Medical Center at UT. This is the adult hospital. Also sometimes referred to as the "new Brackenridge" or brack. It's super confusing, even for the people who live here, and I wish they would have named it something else. Hope this helps as it seems like a lot of yall are from out of town. Hope you hear soon!
  7. I think you're right. I woudln't get discouraged yet. Most of the units at DCMC have not started making calls. My suspision is that the recruiters are trying to fill adult spots first to thin out the pedi applicant pool.
  8. I just got off the phone with the manager from DCMC rehab. I have an interview with them next week! Very excited!
  9. I did my peds rotation at DCMC and made some contacts while I was there. Hoping that pulls through for me!
  10. Still waiting.... I love when HR departments hire at a glacial pace.
  11. It's true. Round Rock has some hard instructors. I took my skills class there with level one professors. I specifically went to EVC because of my experience with 1105. I'm very happy that I did. I've done very well at evc and my friends from 1105 that stayed at RR are not doing as well. They say their lectures are not in line with the book, everything is very unorganized, and the skills check offs are ridiculously strict. Not that they aren't strict at evc, but the general vibe is one of teaching and learning, not a eat your young mentality. Also, the dean's office is at EVC and I think that helps keep the instructors in line. Dr Dickson is very nice and supportive but she does not put up with a learning environment that isn't supportive. I'm biased, but I would go with EVC if that's an option. And absolutely CEC over RR. Avoid RR if you can.
  12. I wanna say my pre req GPA was 3.0 and I made a 90 on my HESI. I also had all my co reqs (ethics, writing etc) finished which also gives you more points. There are plenty of people in my class that got in with lower gpas and HESI scores that are doing just fine. I also know they are expanding the class sizes by about 10-15 seats at both campuses. My professor told me our admitting class was 50 but the next level would be 60-65. Also, they send out acceptance letters in rounds. People at the top of the list get acceptance letters first. We have a set amount of time to accept or decline, then based on that number, they send out another round etc. I have a friend who got her letter two weeks before orientation. Had to quit her job and everything. So just be ready when you put you application in to start the following semester, cause you may get an acceptance really short notice! Get financial aid all lined up even before you hear so your classes are covered if you get in.
  13. I had a 34. I had Bs in a lot of my pre reqs, but I did well on my HESI. If you have a choice between campuses, go to EVC. I did skills at RRC and am now at EVC for level 1. The difference between the instructors is night and day.
  14. I'm a big fan of Timbuk2 bags. I have their command backpack. Lots of room for thick books, extra side pockets for water bottle and coffee tumbler, lots of organizational zipper pockets, and a seperate laptop sleeve. I bought mine about 5 years ago and it's still going strong. No real signs of wear even though it's been all over the globe with me (very TSA friendly) and through 4 years of nursing school. I highly reccomend it. It's pricey, but worth it. You'll never need another bag.
