Anyone ever pack a wound with betadine soaked gauze?
Saw a nurse pack a surgical wound down to tendon, bone, and muscle with betadine soaked gauze… just the regular betadine in the bottle. I think it’s 10% diluted. I’ve never seen this before. I would’ve thought this would irritate the wound.

How much money to expect as a new grad RN?
Houston, Texas medical center pays new grads $27.50/hr

Job advice
Memorial Hermann Houston will consider 1 year of LVN experience as 1/2 a year of RN experience when calculating pay rate, even if starting in the new grad residency program. Houston Methodist Hospital emailed and had me arrange a time for the telephone interview. When they called, they told me I had too much experience to be considered for the new grad residency program and that I need to apply for an RN 1 position. I'm not sure where you pulled this from, but you are mistaken. I think the fact that I am considering the new grad residency programs despite paying $5/hr less than my old job and the fact I listed the experience and program itself as a pro above indicate that I appreciate the training provided in such a program. The situation I described above with Houston Methodist was not me thinking I don't need any further training. It was, in fact, me applying to a nurse residency program and setting up a telephone interview only to be told they were sorry, but after looking at my resume, I have too much experience for the program. They said the program was for new grads, and that I am not a new grad (as far as they are concerned). So, I guess I need to throw a third option into the mix--getting my license and applying for regular RN positions. I will do this anyway, even after accepting a nurse residency program. If the former offers more, I will take that figure to the residency program and see if they will match it. The difference is: the ability to take a position straight out of school in the ICU and have the back up and support and training, etc. to provide a nice, confidence and skill-building transition into such a critical and intimidating field. Thank you

Job advice
Hi So I just graduated from a BSN program. I've been an LVN for 8 years. Im looking at job options. I was offered a job at the LTAC I used to work at...It's a good hospital with high acuity patients and it's in the med center. I've been applying at the other big fancy hospitals here, too. My my problem is, a lot of the big hospitals will only hire me as a new grad in one of their residency programs. Meaning, they pay new grad pay. The difference between new grad pay and the offer I got from my old LTAC is like $5/hr. However, I'm not sure what to do. LTAC Pros/Cons: Pay is good Good staff Med Center location Experience there as an RN is respected in the big hospitals 6 patients and basically a med surg floor Big Hospitals pros/Cons: Big fancy prestigious hospitals...world renowned level 1 trauma centers, etc Looks awesome on resume Awesome experience Straight into ICU with residency year-long training Crappy pay ($5/hr less than above for a year guaranteed) Any advice? I'd jump at the opportunity to work somewhere like an ICU in a level one trauma center, but I have school loans and a lifto live.

UTHSC Fall 2015 Applications
Hey, does anyone know how it works if you applied to both Fall and Summer Semester? I mean, if you accept a seat for the summer semester, does that negate your application for the fall? Or can you chose which one to accept, assuming you get accepted for both?

What's a BON blue card? I haven't seen anywhere on their site where that is mentioned. I imagine they allow for the time it takes, otherwise they would have mentioned it sooner...

Hey, does anyone know how long we have to get our immunization stuff and/or drug test done? I know it says "immediately" for the immunizations, but I have to get a couple of titers done. Or when does registration start?

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Did anyone else's "admission status" in myUT go back to the complete green circle after they paid their $200? Mine did. It was a green check. Now I'm worried, like as if it was a dream, too good to be true.

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
I just got accepted. I didn't get an email, nor did I get a transcript eval. I just logged into myUT and saw the green check with "accepted." I clicked on accept and paid the $200. There were tears in my eyes. It's been emotional. My stats are in this thread somewhere or the other one. As a rough guide, my Science GPA is 3.8, Nursing GPA 4.0, Prereque GPA 3.8. HESI overall was 94 (I think) with an 830 on CT. I forgot to do the learning styles bit on the HESI I was so nervous. Congratulations to everyone who got in! To those who didn't or won't, don't give up. I didn't get accepted last year. I was bummed.

UTHSC Fall 2015 Applications
You're fine. As long as they received it before the deadline (which you confirmed), you're good. They just take their time updating the myUT to do list thing.

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Hey TX2015, I completely understand how you're feeling. This whole thing is so obscure, and with so much riding on it--our careers--it's extremely stressful. I applied for the Fall 2014 semester back in Jan 2014. I had no idea what would transfer, etc. and was surprised to find out that in order to get the transcript eval I had to apply first. My thinking was, I'll just go down there and find out if it's worth me applying yet or whether I should take a few more classes first. As you know, not the case. Pay your $60 and wait. I received the transcript eval for that application (Fall 2014) in February 2014. I had 32 hours of the required prereques. Also, they wanted my foreign transcripts. I received the letter saying I didn't accepted into the Fall 2014 semester in March 2014. The letter didn't say why. I just figured I was missing a transcript (the foreign one) and 8 hours short of the 40. The transcript eval I received the other day was dated November 2014, and it was the same transcript eval I received before. I'm sure they will have updated everything and I'll receive a new one soon. I just freaked out when I first saw it and couldn't think straight. I'm sure your stuff will transfer. I too have no idea what their criteria for acceptance is. I imagine they give greater weight to classes taken at 4 year colleges than at community colleges. My worry is that my A&P, Micro, Math, etc. were taken over 7 years ago. I don't know if that counts against me. I did well on the HESI. Although, I made an 830 on CT and completely forgot to do the learning styles thing! I'm hoping that having been an LVN for the last 7 years and currently working in the med center will count in my favor. I'm not sure, though, as maybe they only want young, fresh out of college kinda students. Sounds like you've done your research, though. Good luck to you, too! Are you going to spend another $60 and put in an application for the Fall 2015 semester? The deadline is Jan 15th. I figured I would. Why not?

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
So I checked my mail today and opened my transcript eval ( I don't check my mail often). I was panicked when I saw that my eval didn't include any of the classes I've taken this year and left me like 8 hours short of the 40 required to apply. I have all 60 hours, and I submitted my transcript with 50 of those hours completed before the Dec 1st deadline. The lady at the registrar assured me they would update my profile when my transcript from the fall 2014 semester was submitted. That was sent (the remaining 10 hours) on Dec 17. The transcript eval I have was prepared on 11/17/14. Surely the transcript I submitted after that before Dec 1st will be included in the eval that who ever decides who gets accepted or not will see, right? I'm kinda freaking out. I don't understand why they would evaluate your transcripts on 11/17 and ignore any classes you take and submit before the application deadline. :/

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Does anyone else applying have any nursing experience? Any LVNs? I'm an LVN. I'm just wondering if that helps any with getting considered for admission. Anyone who is in the program already, were there any LVNs or people with other clinical experience in there too? I just finished up all my prereques this week, so I basically just have to sit around and wait til April :/

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Proof of TSI is some Texas thing that basically says you meet certain reading, writing, Math standards. If you have taken college courses (and passed them), then you meet the standards. proof of TSI will be on your transcripts. Don't worry about the TSI and Transcritps still being on your to do list. As long as they received your transcripts on time, you're good. They don't always update the to do list. Also, if you are still taking classes this semester (Fall 2014), these two things may remain on your to do list until your Fall 2014 transcript is received.

UTHSC Summer 2015 Application
Hey everyone, I applied for the pace-setter bsn starting in summer 2015. I just got conformation that all my stuff got to the registrar's office before the December 1st deadline. The company that evaluated my international transcript sent the evaluation to San Antonio school of Dentistry. I discovered this just in the knick of time, as they fedexed a copy to UT Houston so it arrived on Wed 26th Nov--the day before they closed for Thanksgiving! I take my finals for History II and Chemistry this week, and that's all my prereques done. I took the Hesi last New Year's eve. I got a 94% overall, above 90 on all parts, and an 830 on CT part. Now that the deadline is passed, all we can do is sit back and wait :/

UT Houston (Fall 2014 applicants)
I had the same thing and was worried that I'd done something wrong. If you log into the evolve.Elsevier site where hou see the link to your HESI scores there's a little plus sign to the left of it. Click on the plus sign, and the critical thinking score will be in there.

UT Houston (Fall 2014 applicants)
I figured I'd post up my stats. HESI Reading comp -90 Grammar -92 Vocab -94 A&P -100 Math -96 Overall -94.4 Critical thinking 830 I have a 4.0 GPA However, I only have 34 of the required 40 hours of prereques. I'm hoping my humanities from lonestar and Spanish from LSU transfer and count as electives, as that'll bump me up to 41 hours. I'm taking Texas govt, nutrition, US history 1, and US govt this semester and then philosophy, US history 2, and visual arts during the summer (that'll be all 60 hours done before the start of the program). I have no idea where I stand as to my chances of getting accepted, but its nice to see everyone's stats and will be interested to see who gets accepted and who doesn't. I noticed when I filled out my application that I had to enter my work history. I've been an LVN for the last 7 years and currently work in the med center. I don't where everyone else is coming from nursing-experience-wise and have no idea if this has any influence on one's application, but I'd be interested to hear where you guys are coming from. Good luck to everone, by the way :)

UTHSC Traditional BSN Spring 2014 Applicants
This is a good point. I really dislike the "scramble" that it seems to be for everyone to get into this program. I rememberthe day I went to speak to the student affairs desk, there was a chick there asking why she hadn't been accepted into the program even though she had this gpa etc. She ended up breaking down and crying. Its almost akin to getting selected for special forces training -they're not going to hold your hand through the process. I only hope this method helps to produce more competent nurses, because we need them. The other thing that surprised me was the critical thinking portion of the HESI. I really wasn't sure what to expect, and I only really studied for the A&P section. The critical thinking portion was pretty much NCLEX questions. Assuming a large portion of the applicants are college chicks with no nursing experience, this seemed odd. I really only applied here due to the fact that they don't require your A&P, micro, etc. be less than 5 years old. I've only learnt recently about the prestige associated with this school/program. Hang in there, dude. It'll be worth it in the end. Also, its only 4 semesters, and the longer it takes to get in, the longer you have to save up to pay for it. :)

Call student affairs at like 8am in the morning 713 500 2108. That's who FINALLY was able to tell me that all my transcripts were received. As for finding out if anyone is going to evaluate them? hahahaha!

UTHSC Traditional BSN Spring 2014 Applicants
I gave up emailing the registrar/admissions address given on my myUTH asking if they received my transcripts and then asking who I should ask to find out if they were received. They just kept sending back the same one line answer. It was even more entertaining when I originally decided to apply and went to the school itself and was turned away. They told me I need to go home and apply online and that I couldn't use a computer there to fill out an application. Ha! I just wanted to talk to someone and show them my transcripts to see if it was even worth applying yet depending on what would transfer etc. It's been like trying to get a dinner date interview with some hollywood celebrity. Did you reapply?
