beachynurse's post in Substitute School Nurse Interview was marked as the answerA substitute nurse in our division, is going to fill in for the nurse in all aspects. We have a sub manual in each school that will tell you a little about each clinic and how it's run, who is who in the school, procedures, policies specific to your school, and information about food allergies, students with special procedures. You are expected to assess all student with injuries, illness, give meds, respond to emergencies. Just a hint, when I was a sub, I went around to the schools I wanted to sub in and met with the nurse and took notes about how the nurse did things, where to find things in the clinic, and kept them in a notebook to refer too. I did the same thing when I was called in advance to sub. Doing that made it much easier to fill in.

beachynurse's post in School nurse does not want to float was marked as the answerI have been a school nurse for 40 years with the last 21 in a high school. There have been times when a nurse was absent with no substitute available, and I had been asked to run over to that school in order to cath a student, or start and end a tube feeding. Our job function is to ensure the well being, safety, and health of the students. What would happen to that student if no one agreed to go to that other school to cath them? Even though the nurse was absent, the treatments still have to be done, so I don't mind running over to a nearby school to help out. I may need the same help at my school one day, and would hate for another nurse to refuse to help my students.
