  3. Air Force?? Navy??

Tanya, Not sure if there are any cons, or catches - if you are interested in the military you must know all about the possibilities out there. That could be - adventures in traveling meeting different people and places, and especially now it could me...
  4. Any Military Nurses Out There?

When I became an RN, I could only get into the Air National Guard all other branches wanted a BSN. And that was in 1998 and in 2000 the Oklahoma Air National Guard changed that to now only letting BSN nurses join. Yes you can go in enlisted as an AD...

Congratulations! Remember don't take the Dr's yelling personally. And do not get discouraged early on, it will take some time before you feel comfortable in all cases. Esther

  7. Guys in Nursing...What's your Input?

None of the male nurses I work or worked with are gay. And being in the Airforce Reserves there are plenty of them there - no gay ones though. I work with several female nurses that are gay though. To each his/her own.

Four years as an RN = four years in the OR for me (at the same hospital)
  9. Heinous or Forgivable???

Someone needs to explain it to her that way. How would she appreciate a sign like that on her own mother? I agree, Sr. Margaret.

  11. I answered yes. Working in the OR, I put myself in that setting and I know which nurse I would pick to be my nurse. But after reading some of the posts, I recalled some of the situations that happen and realized that No I would not feel confident i...
  12. why do we settle for such low pay

That is a tough question... I have been thinking about that one for some time now. First of all I do have a contract with this facility which will be up in January (they paid $5000 towards my BSN). That was a good thing. So do I feel loyal to them?...
  13. How much do you make?

RN 4 years OR $19.46/hr night diff weekend diff=$3./hr call pay $1.50/hr
  14. Yes, certainly take a copy of your resume. Remember you are out to brag on yourself, so you want all to see it. It also shows that you are prepared. They may take you more seriously, showing up with the resume in hand.
  15. The answer to the nursing shortage they use at our facility is "we are working on it." Having an ad in the local newspaper for the last year, is called "working on it"
  16. The most difficult thing to do.

The hardest thing for me to have to do is leaving my family to have to come back to work when on call. - maybe the hardest in any job not just nursing, but I was just called out last night right in the middle of spending time with my 9 y/o, looking ...
  17. Just curious... We have several elective cases that end up being scheduled at 1600 or sometimes even later if we have a very busy day. If you were to have to have surgery, would you allow your surgeon to scedule you that late in the day, when he/sh...
  18. Comparing Wages in the OR setting

Well, yesterday we (director, clinical coordinator, 5 area specialists) had a talk with the head of the OR. We told him all about how we are unhappy with the measly call pay ($1.50/hr), too much time spent at work and not enough pay. Two of our nur...
  19. What were they thinking?

Sometimes it seems that they just look for a warm body to fill the slots! Never should a student be in a room with the meanest surgeon! And then they wonder why everyone leaves. Go figure...
  20. Comparing Wages in the OR setting

Stevierae, Exactly! We do elective cases on saturday (supposedly only on saturday), and there have been times when an emergency comes in whether it is an appy or a crani, at that point we call in the back up crew. We have a seperate heart call cre...
  21. Comparing Wages in the OR setting

I have been in the OR for 4 years now, getting $19.86 an hour with $1.50/hr for call, which can range from 1 night a week to 4 nights a week, we average 1 1/2 weekends in a six week period. Our call pay is stopped if we go in to work. We only get ti...
  22. How's the nursing shortage affecting ...

We are begining to see a shortage in the OR at our city, the cardiologist/cardiac surgeons opened a brand new "heart hospita." In order to staff it they offered nurses, and other caregivers from other hospitals all over the city. So now all hospita...
  23. Yes, the jitters and being nervous are common feelings especially before clinicals start. I was really nervous before my very first clinical, and it really didn't go away because just when you get comfortable in one particular area, it is time to mov...
  24. Glad you are doing better now. Sometimes thats all it takes is a bit of venting. Your post was great I laughed. Deep down inside we know that everyone has crazy days, but when I get one, it seems that I am the only one. Thanks for sharing! Of cou...
  25. I thought Betts idea of going to the center of the U. S. of A. was wonderful, but Oklahoma City is pretty much in the center and it is a bigger city (and that is where I am currently at). But since I have family in Indiana, Chicago would be great, ...
