Need help with coping with family emergency while in nursing school
My mom passed away suddenly from colon cancer during my second block of my 4 block RN program and I had to withdraw from my program to spend her last 2 weeks with her. It was really difficult because we didn’t know all the details at the time I withdrew but just that her surgeon across country really stressed it was important I return to my home state of PA. I withdrew in October last year from my AZ program and returned to repeat block 2 this spring, almost done with this block. :) At the time it felt like my whole world was collapsing my mom was sick, my program wouldn’t give me the time to go be with her, but in the end I’m still on my way to be an RN and redoing this semester of my med surg content has me at a 95% grade with a stellar foundation of med surg nursing that will always give me an advantage. Is your aunt emotionally close to you? Is being there for her more important than this semester? If not that’s okay too, you have to decide but sometimes you just can’t do it all. You can also call the local area on agency and see if they can have an agency stop by during the day since she has no insurance, You would be surprised the services available through places like that

Mandatory Vaccine Waiver in Nursing School/Clinicals
At Imagine ---- Suzanne Humphries suggested that measles were no longer a fatal disease when the vaccine was introduced? It was a HUGE problem until after the vaccine was developed.... She denies this fact that has been proven time and time again. ( I have references for my non anecdotal info) :) Pinkbook | Measles | Epidemiology of Vaccine Preventable Diseases | CDC She misrepresents it as being minimal despite 90% of people under the age of 15 getting it at the time. She cites that rate of death and suggest this implies measles was no longer a global health issue nor did it require vaccination. She argues that it isn't a "serious illness" despite the blindness, encephalitis respiratory issues and suffering it caused over 140, 000 Americans each year. (In 1960 when hospitalization wasn't as prevalent) The Netherlands did a fancy little study on the bible thumpers that chose not to vaccinate during the outbreak in 2004-05 - Measles Epidemic in The Netherlands, 1999-2 | The Journal of Infectious Diseases | Oxford Academic Her next argument is that the measles vaccine causes pneumonia and brain damage. Yep it did - like twice in 1967 and it was pulled and replaced. Please note the study on this Altered Reactivity to Measles Virus: Atypical Measles in Children Previously Immunized With Inactivated Measles Virus Vaccines | JAMA | JAMA Network She argues the vaccine is deadly - without a single example of why or who or how??? ***** She goes on to state the only true thing in the book - that the risk of an adverse reaction from the vaccine is 0.00006% and the chance of getting the measle and having severe complications prior to vaccinations is (this is going to shock and awe!) is a GREATER CHANCE! SURPRISE!!!! Getting sick and permanent complications? 0.1% prior to the vaccine. Wow - the odds seem to be scientifically in favor of the vaccine. This is why I think homeopathy is crap (for unhealthy people or at risk populations) and shouldn't be touted as medicine. It's not.

Direw0lf - FWIW - I am pro vaccine. However titers are ALWAYS a better option than vaccines. If someone has immunity it's far better to test the levels than to give unneccesary meds. I think most all medical professionals would agree with that. With dogs for example - the vaccine is typically effective for a range of 7-10 years and the vaccine itself can have some adverse reactions. Is rabies more dangerous than the reactions? YES!!! Should I get vaccinated if I have immunity? Hell no! :) The OP isn't asking about how to stay immune to diseases, that isn't this person's concern about factual immunity - they want to know how to get out of what they consider ineffective or not worth it vaccinations. What you suggested is logical and this person is not :)

Failed last semester and it hurts
I truly hope you learn some compassion. Someone who is willing to ask for help when needed and wants another chance is not weak or "a mess". Empathy is being able to walk a mile in someone else's shoes without being cruel or judgemental. This isn't appropriate and I hope whatever demon's "Pony Mom' is dealing with - she comes to terms with them before providing care for patients. I'd rather have a kind nurse who had to repeat a block of nursing school than a cynical cruel one that passed all semesters.

Pre-admittance Drug Screen Concerns
Schools typically are required to have a CMO - chief med officer that reviews any positive drug screens. The test is sent to this person, they call you when they get the result and say "Is there a medical reason for the positive result?" You say "Yes my RX number on the prescription is 1233445 or whatever it may be" The school is never notified of the issue unless you have no reason or verification with the CMO. That would be a violation of HIPPA and a HUGE conflict of interest. Let me know if you have any more questions. I have taken a med that comes up positive in pre screenings and went through the process quite a few times without issue.

RN hopeful. New to Arizona, Need advice.
You have a bachelors of science already? I would schedule an appointment by calling Gateway Community College and and attend an orientation session. The only way to get up to date info is via the advisors. I believe you could apply for the accelerated BSN to RN option. I'm 32 and in block 1 currently. The best way to finish sooner is to get started faster :)

Why are nurses the only profession that cannot accept gifts?
I live in Phoenix and ALL of the cops I know go to Quiktrip before coffee for cops is free.... It's just a general way of life

Review test question
My professor posted a practice question of "A client with a compound fracture of the radius has a plaster cast applied in the ER. The nurse tells the client to to seek medical attention if which of the following occurs?" Would an open fracture EVER be covered initially with a plaster cast? Isn't this an infection issue?

Mandatory Vaccine Waiver in Nursing School/Clinicals
Thanks - I was definitely the odd man out in lab for the course.... But I'm still glad I was - and to the OP: Regardless of what you think about vaccinations - How do you feel about the little ones with compromised immune systems UNABLE to be vaccinated - that would be exposed to the things you may contract and spread prior to having signs of illness during your career? I could care less if you get sick, as an adult you make a choice and deal with consequences. However you will be taking that choice away from those unable to be safely vaccinated due to pre existing conditions.... Just wondering if that had crossed your mind....

What procedures do you learn?
"There are actually girls I know that have this television show idea of what nursing is like, and that they will just be playing with babies all day. If you have to ask if that's nursing or not, then once again, you probably need to pick another career field." You may be the most sexist nurse ever....

Mandatory Vaccine Waiver in Nursing School/Clinicals
To the OP - While I 100% disagree with all of the logic and reason behind this fight - I must say I admire the willingness to as one poster said "dig your heels in". That being said, being a registered nurse in the United States anyways one would think that refusing to accept and abide by a primary tenant of self care - preventative vaccinations - isn't really copacetic? On a side note I don't support the breeding and dissection of animals for medical research including my education. Enough people die every day and since humans are the only species benefiting directly from our education I strongly feel humans should be the only one's chopped up and used to advance research. That was a fight with my instructor for AP2 that was VERY challenging for me and I decided not to cave. So I can understand going against the grain, but again this is one hell of a grain to go against.

How long will the wait be for MCC with only ONE choice?
I applied with a time stamp of July 11, 2016. The absolute soonest I would start CEP or ADN is Fall 2017, unless multiple people turn down their choices is what I was told by the hotline people and my advisor. I applied to MCC both CEP and ADN. (it only takes one choice to say you'll accept placement in either CEP or ADN per the Maricopa nursing folks) The CEP program is the same wait - because even more people are applying to it, so that compensates for the slightly more spots. I told my advisor that frankly I didn't care which program I applied to - or which campus that I just want to start ASAP and asked her where to go. She said that among the centrally located campuses (SCC, PVCC, MCC and GWCC) it didn't matter. The only class I can still take is pathology... I'll be done with all the other co-req's and CEP classes for ASU/NAU at that point...

How long will the wait be for MCC with only ONE choice?
They are either confused or something was miscommunicated. There is currently about a 3 semester wait based on a time stamp. I'm on the list....
