Ridiculous! I'd say just send a letter home requiring that all children, especially cheerleaders, have their heads shaved before returning to school. It's the only course of action. Wouldn't want such a *dangerous* public health issue to go unchecked.

For the 99% percent of head injuries that turn out to not be concussions, which ones do you call home about? I work in an elementary and usually have head bumps of varying levels of intensity every day. Obviously actual concussions go to the ER, but what about everything else, those bumps and bruises that have no neuro changes when they present...? I almost always send a note about "warning signs of concussions," but I debate the necessity of calling. I have had parents call me upset about not getting called, etc etc though, so I do call about most of them. Just curious what others out there do! Thanks

I'm another lurker coming out of the shadows. Just joined up today. Graduated 2011 and worked medsurg a few years then peace corps before starting as an elementary school nurse this past autumn. I have loved reading this message board and knowing I am not alone! Really appreciate all of the wisdom and humor that is shared here. My school is doing their annual health fair next week and the teachers asked me to do a lesson on hand washing/germs/etc.for second graders. The nurse before me left rather suddenly; I never actually met her, and I'm not sure what she used to do for this. The lesson needs to be about 40 minutes and I think two classes will come at a time (about 40 students) until all the classes have been through. Does anyone have an ideas or lesson plans that you've done for this sort of thing? I want the students to practice (I do have special glitter and a black light), but I feel like that will be difficult to do with such a large number of students. I know teaching hand washing shouldn't be a big deal, but I still feel like I am trying to gain the respect of the teachers (they are an interesting crowd!) and don't want to make a fool of myself doing this! Appreciate any thoughts/ideas you may have! Thanks
