Safe Practice? Report to Corporate Compliance/HR/Magnet?
I wasnt even thinking of HR or Corporate Compliance but a couple nurses at my job approached me about it and encouraged me for it. I thought before taking that step to come here put the situation up and get feedback. The feedback is obvious against going to corporate. I am glad I havent taken that step. Maybe it is just time to find a new place?

Safe Practice? Report to Corporate Compliance/HR/Magnet?
I have been a pct at a hospital for a few years. I have had nothing but great reviews from patients, nurses, other pcts - I am not lazy. Lately I have had some bad staffing assignments which I think are totally unsafe practice. Before I take the step to make a formal complaint I wanted to get your idea if this is unsafe practice: Background: Magnet hospital, stroke unit. Night of the 17th -- 2 PCTs for 25 patients. 5/6 of my patients were total care. For these patients I have to do q2 turn, boots hand splints off on q2, bladder scan cath if necessary, change clean, set up feeding bag run feeding either 2x a shift or once a shift for sure. This is in addition to the other 5/6 patients I had. Some patients have early therapy so we are expected to dress 2 patients. Around 430am the other pct got sick and I ended up working alone for all 25 patients from 430am till 7am. Night of 25th I had following assignment: patient 1 - turn q2, clean change, bvi bladder scan cath if necessary, 2 feedings 12 and 6 patient 2 - calls to use bathroom needs bed alarm patient 3 - turn q2, clean change, bvi bladder scan cath if necessary, 1 feeding at 6 patient 4 - calls 3-4x to use bathroom needs bed alarm patient 5 - turn q2 clean change bvi bladder scan cath if necessary, 1 feeding at 6 dress up patient 6 - turn q2 clean change bvi bladder scan cath if necessary 1 feeding at 6 patient 7 - turn q2 clean change bvi bladder scan cath if necessary dress up patient 8 - calls for bathroom bed alarm patient 9 - calls 3-4x to be changed dress up patient 10 - calls 3-4x for bathroom Is the above unsafe practice for 1 pct? Should I make a formal complaint to corporate compliance/HR/Magnet?

Why are so many nurses against unions?
Per a nurse who has been working at our hospital for 32 years, a few nurses tried to get union in our hospital and all were somehow let go or put under so much pressure that they voluntarily resigned. The plot thickens. I am thinking to now put in a complaint with HR and Corporate Compliance for what I deem is unfit unsafe practice. I am going to post the situation as a new thread and get a general idea of what to do what direction to take from here.

Fragrance Sacrifice
If it is really that important to you maybe you can keep a light fragrance for work and the heavy musk oud amber stuff for the house. For males - I recommend this for work and home, tell your coworkers/patients/and significant other at home that I said "you are welcome": http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/nd.315.jpg

Why are so many nurses against unions?
I am very new to this and that's exactly what I am looking for as well. Things have been going downhill the last 3 years where I work. What I am looking to find now is someone who experienced the transition going from no union to getting one - I want to ask them about the change, if it was beneficial to them, how they went about it, challenges faced etc. I am looking for such nurses now. I think all-nurses is a great resource for this. Maybe this thread can be a resource for organized union nursing. I know recently the nurses in a hospital in my area threatened to strike and this was the info I found on it, it seems they got a good deal of what they were asking for: Oct 19th 2014: UIC Hospital nurses preparing for Tuesday strike | abc7chicago.com Oct 21st 2014: U. of I hospital nurses to get 2.25 percent to 3.6 percent increases - Chicago Tribune I also know a lot of the 1% wealthy people throw money at trying to get rid of unions so definitely it is something to look into, why are they fighting so hard against organized labor? I continue to learn more and more everyday about this and the next step will be to contact a union rep and discuss my findings and see where to go from there. If I find out more I will post here.

Have you discovered the therapeutic benefits of a good laugh?
There are many people in the world who cant even stand to see the line of work we daily work in. There are many layers of stress covering us at work. It is very important to our sanity to have a way to release that stress. Working night shift I always try to keep a good light mood with staff using jokes, crazy stories, YouTube prank videos. I always make it a point to balance a stress situation with something light.

Please help :(
A person has to know when to say "no" - learn to say "no" - its very useful in life. I think ppl can give you a guilt trip very easily and get you to do anything for them. Tell them "no"

New RN ready to give up
HANG IN THERE! First of all, it feels GREAT to be finally posting in here. To get back to the original post - Hang in there, you are learning many things that you would otherwise have to pay a lot of money to learn or may never get the chance to in another place. This is actually making you a better nurse and could potentially make your future better for you. Things you are learning right now on your 1st gig in nursing straight out of school: 1 - To be able to handle a variety of different medical issues all at once 2 - Develop thick skin 3 - How to deal with an cr@P manager (you need to keep as much communication with your manager in writing as possible) 4 - How to deal with bad docs (you need to break out of that shell and start to check these guys as well, ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES) These are very important things to have down not just for nursing but also for life. Ways you can cope: 1 - Come here and vent 2 - Start planning major fun activities on your off days 3 - Eat good nutritious healthy foods, get in the gym, start yoga Thats just my 2 cents. Not all of nursing is like this, but this is a great experience for you for your next move and hopefully will be great for your future in nursing.
