Hep Lock Confusion
I am a New Grad and I have a question about hep-locked Iv's. I understand it means that you have to flush the IV with Heparin in order to cap it off. Does that mean that everytime you open the IV or Central Line back up and close it - you have to flush it again with Heparin. What if the IV is not accessed for a day or two? Is it your responsibility to look at the chart and realize that it needed a heparin flush. If it has been capped consecutively and unused, could you just flush with Saline or is the Hep Lock always needed??? THANK YOU

Alright guys--- Here is the deal on the living situation. Craigslist is the best site by far to find a place to live but you won't be able to find anything this early on for a place with a lease that starts in september. You might want to start looking sometime around the summer if you want to find something nice. I have lived in every area of philadelphia possible. I have lived in North Philly ( by temple), Art Museum Area, Center City, and now I live in Manayunk. My two favorite areas to live have been art museum, and center city, but they are the most expensive by far. Studios/1 Bedrooms in CC cost anywhere from 600-1200 per month depending on how nice a place and how key of a location. If you want to walk to hahnemann every day to avoid the traffic--(which is my plan because I think the classes are really early) you are going to want to live on Race/Vine/ Arch or anywhere in center city. Art Museum area is also pretty close to the hospital and it is a really nice and safe area. My dad wants me to live in the dorms because I can just add that up with my student loans because I am not sure how easy it is to get loans for rentals. My current friends/roomates want to sign another lease with me next year but I know with this hectic schedule I will not be able to live in a house with people not in the program. If I live in the dorms (which look ok) I am definitely going to want to live with someone else who is doing the program(If anyone is looking to share something to cut down on the price?). I think Drexel's housing is like 8,000 for the year which seems ok I guess-- but I would be willing to find a place nearby as well??? I hope this helps anyone unfamiliarwith the area-but like I said before I would be glad to help anyone from out of state out in seeing the city and deciding where to live.... Let me know!!

Also, I am wondering if you guys are looking into any of the options for paying for the program??? Are you going to try to sign a contract with a hospital (there are a few in philly that will pay for the program I think, but don't quote me on that)?? OR are you just going to take out some huge loans??? Does anyone know the good loans to look into? (low interest rates, etc.) I am starting to look into financial options but I am not sure what I am going to do as of yet....

Lunise and Charley --- I would absolutely be happy to give you a tour around the city if you would like!!! Where are both of you from, and how old are you?? Are you thinking about living in the housing provided by Drexel or are you going to get your own place? If you are going to get your own place- www.craigslist.org is an awesome site to look for housing. You are going to want to live in either around the art museum area or center city, because those are the nicest areas in the city and they are the closest to hannehman (sp?), although they are the priciest areas. The traffic around where drexel's hospital is can be quite annoying and frustrating so I can't see anyone wanting to commute to class every day. The area where the hospital is at is actually pretty nice. I would consider it "center city" which is my favorite part of the city. I am graduating from temple in may and then I am hopefully going to costa rica for the summer to teach english and "relax by the beach " before we start the hellish year. Anytime in may or august I would be happy to show either of you around the city! Let me know...and congratulations to everyone who got in. p.s. for the last post, I think someone wanted to know the gpa of an accepted individual--- I have a 3.4 in most of sciences and a 2.99 overall but I still have two semesters left. Hope this helps.

Drexel ACE(Fall 2006)
Hey guys--- I just heard back from drexel's accelerated program as well and I got accepted!!! I did not expect it to happen at all. I have lived in the area for four years now ( student at temple university) so I am pretty familar with it --if you have any questions about the area Lunise??? I also applied at jefferson but I think it is more expensive then drexel's and I like drexel's start date also. I talked to a few girls that have completed the program and they said it was hard as all hell but it was fast paced and once they were done they got like 6 job offers on the spot. I am thinking about definitely living in the dorms as well since I can get that covered with the financial aid and it will be right behind the hospital. One girl that I spoke to said that she rarely left her dorm room bc she was studying so much. I figure I might as well live close by so it is easier for me to study. I think the program will go really fast and it will be an amazing experience. I didn't get into nursing school when I applied as an undergrad so I finished my degree in something else and now here I am going to drexel next year! So excited!!!

Repeating Science Courses??!!!
Hi all...Just looking for some friendly feedback. I had to repeat two of my pre-req science courses in college and am now applying to accelerated nursing programs. Does anyone know if schools would look at this as a positive thing or a negative? I just feel like I am outlawed from becoming a nurse because I got C's and now I am paying for it....Does anyone have any input or success stories about getting into nursing school with repeated science classes???

RN made me cry today at work!!
Just try to grow thick skin jacob and don't let asshole nurses like that bring you down! People think they are superior to others and they dont know how to treat people with respect--but they are dealing with their own insecurities...Good luck!
