Are There Jobs for Inexperienced RNs Besides Floor Nursing?
Hello: I know you received tons of replies regarding your question. I can totally relate to your situation. Some will consider us loosers or quitters, reality is when you are taking care of patient's it is you and only you the one responsible. I also started at a very good teaching hospital and after 4 months of anxiety and fear i decided that was not for me, i was at a very demanding Oncology unit were patients were very ill. I tried nursing home and it was not for me either. I can tell you i had been working as an admission nurse for hospice for the past 5 months and i absolutely love it. I finally found my place, the hospice environment it is very nurturing and pro patient. My anxiety level is at a minimum and i am able to be myself again. Someone once told me "there is a place in nursing for everyone" i am very glad to see you found the courage to admit something wasnt for you, believe me i know a few who stick to it because of the fear of being perceived as failures. Wish you the best! You can reach me anytime for advise.

That Magic 1 Year Mark
Interesting. It didnt cross my mind. I am currently doing nights and i was told that during the day the workload is more. The days that i work i do feel shaky and tense due to the lack of sleep. I also notice that morning shift gets along better than night shift.

New nurse feeling discouraged
I did long term for a month. My training was 6 days. 30 patients, no desk nurse only a supervisor running from floor to floor. My anxiety level was in the roof. Everyone questions why would an RN work at a long term? Simple! Hospitals wont hire new nurses and when they do they make you sign a contract at a lower pay rate.

New nurse feeling discouraged
People tell me i should be glad i landed a job at a hospital. Reality is i dont even know if this is really what i wanna do. I see a lot of my coworkers are miserable. My hospital is a reputable "teaching" hospital as well. I am at a busy oncology floor where not surprising people last no more than a year or so. The ones that had been there for years live very close or simply get easy assignments because of their seniority. I really wonder about my future, this is my 2nd career as well. Thanks for your input

Stressed
I started the residency program and it is also 9 weeks. Like you i feel stressed and defeated most of the time. I feel rushed and incompetent i am often wondering if i made the right choice. This job is taking over my life and my class is falling behind because im always too tired to keep up. I wonder if i am going to make it.

I had been working for 1 month and feel exactly the same way already! Is this what i signed off to? is this what nursing is about? I am overwhelmed to the max

New nurse feeling discouraged
You really know how i feel. Part of the reason i have not left yet is because #1 i signed a contract #2 i cannot let my family down and put all the burden on my husband and #3 where am i going to go next? I worked at a Skilled Nursing Facility for a month prior to this and it was an absolute disaster. 28 patients, admissions, discharges, running after CNA's fighting with them, risking my license. I will most likely will not stay there for the years stipulated on the contract but i think some experience maybe and after 6months-1year then find another area. I regret not doing my homework about the amount of work people get in this hospital and why people leave. I was excited as a new grad landing at a popular hospital. I guess thats how they get us! Thanks for sharing your story. Like you, i do believe peace of mind is important.

Thanks for your reply. I really needed to read this. :) I am a true believer that time heals. I need to allow myself time. I just feel the job is so demanding there is no room for errors or learning properly.

Why do RN's avoid LTC positions?
Yup! Sometimes is not really bad CNA's or bad nurses. Like i said the ratio is simply out of this world. You are forced to do minimum care before moving to the next patient. Tonight i have 29 patients and is simply a matter of hoping i can manage my time to get medpass done by 11pm so i can start my charting to then start again at 5am why 5am? Because if i dont start by 5 i will not leave on time. Terrible. I know i am going to the hospital now and it will not be easy. But i need to know that there is more to nursing. I feel so frustrated. I hope it goes a bit better.

Should I leave this racist town?
That is very unfortunate. I had been in a similar situation before. Only that i am hispanic and experienced bad treatment from my african american coworkers including the owner of the company. Everything was fine and in fact, i got hired because i "looked" african american but once they found out where i was from everything changed. I know the emotional burden and they toll this takes on you. Believe me: your sanity is important! Apply everywhere, and by everywhere i mean everywhere. You need to get out of that toxic place. But make sure you get a job first, is not easy but is not impossible. I had been working as an RN for 2 months and i already have 2 job offers, once u pass the initial training some places figure it will be easier to train you. Best luck. Keep your chin up.

Why I love being an oncology nurse
Hello. I know this is not a recent post but i wanted to let you know reading you has giving me a new outlook. I start oncology 2 weeks from now. I am a fairly new nurse. Anything else you can add about your experience will be appreciated. What your daily routine looks like?

Why do RN's avoid LTC positions?
You are absolutely right .I admire your desire to make a difference. I had been working at a LTC facility for 2 months and I came in to work with the same vision. Be ready to deal with all types of nurses. The time you have in your hands is not enough for the amount of patients you are required to take care of. It is really challenging. I recently received a job offer at a hospital in a New nurses program with a contract of 2 years. I was told by a fellow nurse "are you ready to be a real nurse" my question to her was "so the elderly are not considered real people" I guess the fact that we dont deal with daily emergencies make us less nurses in the eyes of the hospital nursing staff. Maybe that is the reason why hospitals rarely hire nurses from LTC
