avimon, The hospital I work for, request all RN's that are new to the OR complete "AORN nursing course 101". (this course is taught at our hospital). Class room time (didactic hours are approx. 180). Each nurse completes clinical time at their assisnged hospital. (we have 6 hospitals) This is a GREAT course! You can complete in about 6 months--maybe 5. Did you attend a course to learn scrubbing? If so you are already ahead! Most OR's require you to take call like ortess said. Good luck.....

stonesilver, Have you read the hospitals policies? Maybe a staff member can review these with you. Look at "Operating room attire", "hand & nail care", jewerly, etc. Ihope someone has explained hope someone has explained policy/procedure for handwashing, surgical site marking, surgical site prepping, Pt. identifiers, instrument/sponge/sharp counts. Are you going to attend a periop internship? Do you have a preceptor? You can also check "AORN" web site. Check to see if there is an AORN chapter that schedules meetings. I'm not sure area you will be working on...but everyone is right. In San Antonio,Tx... one of the HCA hospitals..hired an agency nurse for 50.00/hr. Now that is pretty good. I have done alittle searching and reading about traveling RN's. I think I am ready to do some traveling. I have worked in the OR circulating and spent some time as a perioperatvie educator for a pedi OR and a general/Transplant hospital. Love working in the OR!!! Good luck new traveler in Las Vegas!
