Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) Fall 2016
Hello! If you attend the school''s information session you'd gain a lot of information about the wait list and much more! But yes, I waited a semester but I know some who've waited 2. It goes by fast. I'm currently in the second half of my second half of my second semester and they split us into 2 groups. One half takes psych nursing while the others take medsurg. In first semester everyone was in the same class. I am enjoying 2nd semester much more than first and am really enjoying nursing school this far. There hasn't been a day that I feel dreadfull waking up to go to school, but that is just me.

I really enjoy math, so for me buying the dosage calculation book felt like a waste but I needed the book because we did practice problems in class but the math you learn in first semester is very basic medical math. But that is my own perspective because I know others who have a difficult time with math.

Of course! It's no problem! Well I really enjoyed pharmacology compared to fundamentals because pharmacology involved concrete facts and mostly it wasn't subjective information that could interpreted differently based off another individual. Pharmacology involved dosage calculations, it also involved knowing drug classifications, knowing their contraindications, indications, side effects, and nursing interventions and teaching you'd do with the patient. I can give an example, benazepril is an Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor it is indicated in patients with hypertension. It's major side effect is an annoying dry cough so you'd assess the patient for signs of that cough. It can also alter potassium levels in the blood which is very dangerous so you'd monitor potassium levels in these patients. But of course there's so much more about that certain drug class. With parking you shouldn't worry, I took pharm in the summer and never had problems with parking since no one took summer classes and all nursing classes are early in the morning. The only time I had difficulty with parking was my first day of class for the fall semester because everyone is starting school again so everyone comes in early like at 6:30 so it got packed really fast. Luckily they opened up a new parking lot so it should ease some of the congestion but after 3 days it dies down quickly. And with classes beginning at 6 am sometimes, its not much to worry about.

Yes of course! I actually enjoy answering these questions. It makes me feel like I'm contributing to others. Well my clinical instructor is different from the lecture instructor. I finished all my info session and transcript stuff in the Fall of 2015 and then applied and waited one semester and got the letter telling me I got in for Fall 2016. So it was really fast. In regards to people dropping out the first semester it's true. We started with 45 of us and I think we're down to 34 people. Nursing is no joke and they actually made it much easier for my semester and the upcoming semesters by making Pharmacology start in the summer, for the next semester during winter break. But that took out one class during the fall. If we had that class during the regular fall semester alongside Fundamentals, Medsurg, clinical, and Communication/Nursing Process, I'm sure our numbers would be smaller. The workload is insane and for this week I have to read 6 chapters for one class, finish my patient paperwork and careplan, and work on my care plan for the communication class. I've seen people who failed and those who dropped out of their own will because they either thought nursing wasn't their calling or they thought the work load was too great. You really have to prepare yourself for the work they give you because for many weeks I felt like there isn't enough hours in the day to complete all my readings. I actually need 3 more chapters to read by tomorrow. Naps feel like your worst enemy and you feel guilty for napping. I remember for my first clinical week I stayed up til 3 in the morning filling out paperwork for a patient and I had to wake up at 4:30 for clinical which was 6 am - 12 pm, I was exhausted. Although as time moved on I've become much more efficient in filling them out. I usually take 2 to 4 hours now which is so much faster than 8 to 10 hours. They expect a lot from you and you just have to persevere and tell yourself you can make it! I don't mean to sound intimidating but it's the truth, there's just so much work. I don't want to cherry coat anything. Are you going to be a student for the Spring 2017 class? And best of luck! It's a lot of work but with a study group and motivation you can make it and a lot of it is fun!

I'm a first semester student. I enjoy the program so far. I have a clinical instructor who is so amazing. She makes clinical less nerve wracking and she is so kind and sweet. You really have to be great at critical thinking. Yes feel free to ask. I enjoy answering pre nursing student questions!

Yes no problem! Please do not hesitate to ask anymore questions it's no bother at all. I think it's good to provide information from a students perspective to oncoming semesters! Also I see that there isn't much info about LATTCS nursing program on this forum so I think it'd be great to give a glimpse of the student life at this school.

They just implemented Pharmacology in the summer. Well I'm pretty sure they'll implement it during the winter too but it was originally supposed to be alongside your other first semester classes but the workload was too much. They moved Pharmacology to the summer and you also need to take the intro to nursing course which is 3 weeks long. So I didn't have a summer vacation at all. Just 2 week's before the official first semester started. Our class was 5 weeks long and we met Monday thru Wednesday. This class is where you learn the basic's of pharmacology, how you administer medications etc. We had a test every Wednesday and a practicum where we showed off our medication administration skills at the end of the 5 weeks. For many, it was grueling work which I agree it was but being in the actual first semester is very tough. We constantly have around 3 tests a week, we have to go to clinical and beforehand do research on our patients and make a care plan and know their medications before the clinical day starts. I'm halfway done with the first semester and it's so much work. Making sure you have great time management, and a critical mind is very important in the program. Best of luck!

I'd say so far my experience has been very eye opening. To be honest I didn't know much about the medical field, or what nurses do. I think keeping an open mind is important. Also, I believe having a study group is crucial to your success in nursing school. They moved pharmacology from the regular semester and moved it to the summer, this is the first time they moved pharmacology, and already we lost 10 people. Many of these people were bright students but I just think they had too much on their plate. What I mean by that is they had a lot of distractions going on outside of school which really hindered their learning experience. And they offer the program every semester. I waited 1 semester, it went by pretty fast. We entered with 45 people and we're down to 38.

So you must attend the information session, and also attend a transcript workshop. The info session provides good information about what to expect and how to get in. The transcript verification workshop is where you verify with a group of students, if you have complete the prerequisites for the nursing program and the bachelor's program that is bridged with CSULA. You also need to do the TEAS test (make sure it is a computer test, not pencil paper or you must redo it). So make sure you have Anatomy, physiology, and microbiology done. There are other requirements but I don't remember much of them. If you google LATTC prerequisites they should pop up. If you have any more questions such as my experience this far, although I'm only a first semester student, feel free to ask!

Nursing School Journey
Hello all. I am currently working towards becoming a nurse. I am starting my first semester at the end of the month. I finished 2 courses in my nursing classes that we had to take in the summer. They were intro to nursing and Pharmacology. I really enjoyed pharmacology because I enjoy learning about mechanisms and how things function. I received an A in the class which really helped boost my confidence in my abilities. Pharmacology really helped establish the thought in my head that hard work really does pay off. The way I learned in Pharmacology was to understand the mechanisms behind each drug class. This really helped me understand why certain drugs are given with each other. An example is this: If a patient is taking an ACE inhibitor, benazepril, to treat his hypertension, the doctor may prescribe hydrochlorothiazide because hyperkalemia can occur if taking benazepril. Connecting the dots really helped me understand medications. Others found it easier to memorize the adverse effects and contraindications of certain drugs because our professor tested us on them. But for me to truly understand why a drug has an adverse effect, it really helped me to understand their mechanisms of action. So now that summer classes have ended I am going to begin fundamentals of nursing which I truly am excited about. I feel rather nervous about clinicals because we're working with live patients but I know that my confidence will build upon itself. This is all for now! I will try to keep everyone updated, this is my first time blogging so please forgive me if this is very unprofessional!

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) Fall 2016
Hello, so we had to do so many things before we could enter the program. We had to do a physical, and get titers done which included the Varicella, hepatitis B, polio, etc. There were 5 I can't remember all of them. We had to pay a 130 dollar fee which also included a fire safety course and CPR course, which we actually did today. There was an ATI fee which was pretty expensive, a nursing kit must be ordered, malpractice insurance must be bought, and a background check. For the supplieds they give you a list of supplies all of which can be bought online except for a stethoscope and syphgmomanometer, they must be bought at LATTC. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask, there are a lot of books we have to buy for first semester.
