Thanks, a lot camel, thats very encouraging. I am looking forward to starting soon. Everything else has been completed. I think like you i really enjoy been out in the community, and seeing different patients, i remember i had a really good experience with my community OB rotation, but coming out of nursing school everyone tells you to go for medsurg at for a year, but i find its not everyone that can handle it, and that makes you want to quit nursing totally without realizing that there are others areas of nursing you might actually enjoy and be happy going to work every morning because you really love what you do and the pay is not so bad. Thanks again or your input.

Can any one offer any advice to a nurse going into public health nursing for the first time? What exactly are the various duties the nurses perform. Not totally clueless but just curious to know what to expect and what i may not know yet. Thanks.

Much appreciation to all who posted their concerns and advice on time management. Most new grads are having to deal with this problem during orientation or even after orientation, but on thing I realized is that most, (not all) nurses who precept often forget that they were once new to nursing and did not get to where to they were in one they. I have worked with nurses who truly understand that new grads may find it a little difficult managing their time and therefore let them know that it all comes with time and experience. but there are also others who do not seem to think this way. My personal believe is that it will all come with time and experience. The same God that supplied the grace and strength for nursing school will supply and ensure our success in this nursing profession. So no matter the road we have to take to get there, the important thing is that this goal of effective time management, at least enough to continuously deliver effective nursing care will be achieved.

I also think its a little difficult for young nurses to blend in completely especially when they are not yet married or have any kids and working on a floor where there are not a lot young nurses. Sometimes they have to try a little harder than older nurses.

Its really funny that most new grads and petite nurses are having this problem. I'm very fortunate to be both a new grad and a petite nurse. Just the first week on the floor and I already had a nurse that tried something with me. I really don't understand why they feel they can look down on you because you are petite. One of the nurses almost sent me to pick up blood for her until I realised what she was trying to do. Its Just funny because I've been in 2 different hospitals where I've experienced this issue. They usually forget you are an RN just like them and pretty soon you won't be so new. I say we need to Just hang in there and be the best we can at our Job. Being assertive also goes along way. With this experience, I now pay close attention and watch out for those nurses that want to look down on me. Its good to let them know from the start that they can't try that with you.

Hi Michelle, I really appreciate your reply to these messages. I just started out on an ortho floor and so far its been really interesting. Didn't hear much about orthopedics while I was in school but am looking forward to the experience I'll gain in Ortho. I will like to ask though If u have some assertive pointers or tips to give to new grads on the floor. I've heard you always have to be assertive but at the same time listen, ask questions and don't act like you know it all. Being doing a lot of listening and asking questions but will appreciate more tips about being assertive on the floor, both with patients and fellow nurses. I've also heard you need to be in control with your patients since you are the one providing the care, but am learning to make that transition and will appreciate some tips and advise.
