  1. Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone has taken the board certification exam for holistic nursing? I guess I'm just wondering what to expect since there are not too many practice tests or questions for this particular exam that I can find. I've downloaded the core essentials from the website and have read the Holistic Nursing a Handbook for Practice by Dossey. Any suggestions or opinions from those who have taken it?
  2. So I guess my question is what books or resources can I get my hands on that will help me in my situation. I have purchased The ASAM Essentials of Addiction Medicine and also Addiction for Nursing by Hussein Rassool...Any thoughts on these as resources to get myself started and a better grip on addictions nursing as a whole? Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys! I appreciate your comment and advice..however the reason I stated please only positive comments (I understand I will get what I get) is I was hoping someone would answer my original question about valuable resources to use to better myself and not jump straight to me leaving the hospital..I just wanted my original question answered is all..I guess I should of just kept it short and sweet;)
  3. Hi everyone. So quick background to my current situation. I have been working at the number one trauma hospital in my area on a med surg/tele floor. I have gotten amazing experience and have learned a lot in the short time I've been there (7mo) but have gotten the opportunity at my dream job working as an addictions nurse in a new detox center in my area for teens. It is a well established and reputable program and I'm beyond excited to start this new avenue in my nursing career. So problem...I am still a very new nurse..I only have the 7 mo of experience in the hospital I am currently at. I was lucky enough to get good experience working with patients who were actively detoxing and going through withdrawal since our floor gets everything! However, I do not feel prepared enough to go into this situation with the little amount of experience I have. I am a person who wants to be prepared (or as prepared as I can be...we all know nursing is a learn as you go no matter how prepared you are kinda field). I want to research and learn as much as I can about my role as an addictions nurse. I am worried because I do not feel I am going to get adequate training or orientation taking this position because the detox center is new to the campus and I think they are still feeling out and finding out how to go about everything. So I guess my question is what books or resources can I get my hands on that will help me in my situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys! I want to be on my A game and be the best at this position I can be for these kids:) Also please..I am looking for positive advice and comments..I've seen some people post on others looking for advice and I'm not really looking for criticism saying "why are you leaving the hospital after only 7 months you should stay and get your experience" Everyone's journey is different and I feel this is where mine has led me for a reason and purpose
  4. Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words. It is nice to hear nurses positively post about their job experiences with empathy, compassion and yet reality of things lol

  6. So I am a 37 year old female working on my second degree and have just finished my 3rd semester of nursing school in my ADN program and have one final semester to go!! Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get my mind back into nursing mode...I've done really well so far and of course nursing school has had it's ups and downs but the anxiety I have felt through the program was horrible for me. I feel so burnt out and cannot focus on anything let alone anything related to nursing. I've been out of school for only 2 weeks and maybe thats not enough time but I usually feel rejuvenated by now and would be able to dive back into things...I tried and just can't. I pick up a nursing school book or attempt to read anything and my eyes glaze over and the panic and anxiety sets it.I start thinking how am I going to remember all of the material I've learned the past 3 semesters? I wanted to just leisurely read my saunders nclex review book to keep my mind fresh during these summer months so i didn't lose everything I learned...and the thought sends me into a panic...I know I am going to love nursing if I can just make it out of nursing school and pass the nclex and find my niche but at this moment I don't even want to think about starting 4th semester..This scares the crap out of me because I cannot afford to feel like this for the entire summer and not look at anything and think I'm going to have a successful final semester...Has anyone else ever been through this or felt this way? What did you guys do to get yourself out of the funk and muscle through...I don't want to make this sound like a winey post...I just want to succeed and get through this rough patch..hoping for some positive advice and not a bunch of "suck it up nursing school is supposed to be hard" comments..
  7. Thanks!! i'm like you. I read everything, color code and make detailed notes of the readings. I'm hoping maybe with some time this stuff will start to sink in? I've also been using the codes and materials from the textbook to do online activities and questions. I haven't started the class yet..not till end of august haha they give us the readings and material at the end of the semester for the next... but i figure use my summer to get ahead and understand before I go in and get blindsided....at this point I'm gonna need it
  8. So just curious...has anyone else felt as lost as I feel in the electrolytes and acid base unit? It's only second semester and I'm freaking out because this stuff is like reading German stereo instructions to me. Is it more memorization than anything else I should be focusing on? I get so confused on how everything affects something else and everything seems the opposite of what it should be. I've never felt lost in studying or nursing school yet and this is kinda like a slam in the face. I know this is extremely important stuff to know and am just wondering how everyone else has studied for this stuff to make it sink in and make sense
  9. I kind of find this whole post and most of the proceeding comments hypocritical...Everyone's complaining about people complaining...I have these same students in my classes...I hear the gripes and see the one's who continue to pass by skating by on the bare minimum and no it's not fair especially when you've put in a ton of hard work. I hear how they have no life and how that test was so hard and the teachers aren't fair...guess what....who cares? These people are everywhere in life. Those same people are going be subpar nurses at best and this is if they make it through the whole program. Go in do your thing and know that in the end you did your best and you'll be a better nurse for it. Complaining about those around us gets us no where...It's a waste of your time and energy so don't let the sucubusses annoy you because there's a very likely possibility you will run into nurses in the field who complain constantly just about different things...
  10. Ok so to start this is not a rant or complaint but more of just looking to see if I'm truly nuts or if other nursing students feel this way. I'm almost done with my first semester and am doing descent with A's and B's. I will be completely open with you all...I am not a full time mom or wife nor do I work full time which makes me feel I have no reason to feel this way since so many people have a billion things going on...I will say that I work very hard for my grades since tests and school have never been easy for me and support myself financially. With that being said I feel like I am a completely different person in nursing school. I love what I'm learning but I'm stressed and anxious all the time. Days I feel like i could cry at the drop of a hat. I'm tired of the instructors never being on the same page and never wanting to help AT ALL because it seems like it's an inconvenience to even give a minute to explain an answer. Every professors answers seem to contradict the others so I never really know which is the right way to do things which makes me insane when it comes time to do skills testing. I don't expect teachers to spoon feed me or wipe my butt, but at least steer my in the right direction! Give me the correct info so I can pass these ridiculous tests!! I feel inadequate and hate clinicals because all the nurses talk to you like your a burden more than an asset (keep in mind the only time i see the patient's happy and taken care of is when we are there as student nurses taking care of them) I have become a recluse and all I do is study because it's the only thing I can do to ease my anxiety. The minute I try to spend time with family, my friends, or bf I think I should be studying because I need to pass! It's always in the back of my mind with everything I do. I miss the happy sociable person I used to be. I hate what I've become and how I feel but is this just the price we pay to do something we really want to do? Is our sanity and mental health and happiness worth the low self esteem I'm now suffering from? I just feel lonely and kinda let down by the whole thing. I'm 35 and I've waited most my life to figure out what it is I really wanted to do. I mean it's only the first semester how can this be happening already? I know it's only going to get worse and I'm prepared to deal with it I guess but does anyone else feel this way?
  11. Don't feel bad I'm in your shoes too..I'm in my first semester.Do great in classes but am so not confident in my skills during clinicals no matter how much i practice in lab. I think it's just a time thing and no matter how great we want to be it is going to just be something that we get better at with time and practice..So I guess my best advice is to be patient, keep practicing and don't be too hard on yourself. I always had a tendency to beat myself up for not being perfect or the best at things. With nursing you are never going to be perfect and I think when you can accept that and just do the best you can at the time it will help to relieve some anxiety. Trust me you're not alone. I go into clinicals every day and wonder "oh god am I going to mess something up today or get in someone's way or what if I don't do something the right way" I'm learning to change my frame of mind and try to tell myself "ok how much ass are you gonna kick today" Just do your best. It's all you can ask for and remember we only get better with time and experience under the belt
  12. Hey guys, does anyone have any suggestions on books that helped them throughout nursing school. My buddy just gave me a nursing diagnosis book that she used and found really helpful. What about a care plans book or an NCLEX review book?
  13. I say go for it! I am 34 years old and hated working 2 jobs my whole life in a degree I was not happy with. I didn't always know I wanted to be a nurse, I just knew I wanted to be in the health field helping people and making a difference. I was scared and afraid to go back for many reasons...money, not feeling I was smart enough, fear of failing, feeling I was too old and it would take forever..When I finally told myself I can't keep just getting by in a mediocre life because I'm scared I decided to take my prerequisites for nursing school and got a 4.0 and loved all the classes! Trust me your talking to a girl who barely scraped by college her first time and my GPA was pitiful..it's different when you know what you want! I got accepted to nursing school after a lot of hard work and I'm so excited to begin...If this is truly something you want please don't hesitate and do it now! Don't think of the time or the money..think of it as doing something your gonna love and be happy with the rest of your life! But just realize it's gotta be something you love and are committed to because it's going to be a lot of hard work and time consuming but if you are prepared for that it's a small price to pay to be happy:)
  14. ok so quick question. I start nursing school in Jan and am wondering since I hear how different test taking is in nursing school should I buy an NCLEX book to start looking over things to better prepare myself for what's to come and get a head start? I feel like if I have a better sense of the way they ask questions and what they're looking for I might not be so blind sided when it comes to test taking time since I get anxiety over tests. If so which is the best one to buy and most recent?
  15. thanks for the positive feedback guys! much appreciated to the nerves I have about starting
