Hi there, Is anyone aware of any psych NP programs that incorporate functional psychiatry? I know there's programs that are more holistic but I have yet to find one that incorporates more principles of functional medicine. Thanks!!

Hey everyone! I've kind of hinted at this question before but wondering if anyone has tips about working full-time night shift with a newborn? I'll have 12 weeks off so that's good but I'm starting to get anxious about how child care will work, my husband getting rest when I'm not around, feeling like I'm missing time with her, and just overall stress level. Ideally I'd like to work part time just don't know if that's an option right now. Thanks for any advice

Thanks for all the good comments! I think at this point I definitely prefer to work part time (i.e. 1-2 shifts/week) or find something that I can do from home. Which I guess leads me to my last question. Did anyone leave nursing for awhile to do something else that allowed them to stay home or was just better overall for the family? I understand that work from home does not mean sitting around eating cake and not doing anything but I guess I just want to know if people found options that work! I would probably lose some nursing skills if I took a break from the profession but I would be ok with that.

I currently am the means to our health insurance...so we would have to figure that out. As far as career goals I am interested in public health nursing. But priority wise I am willing to sacrifice any dream job/money to have time with my kids. But the bottom line is I'll still need to bring in income of some kind.

Hey guys! So I've asked a lot of questions from you seasoned nurses before but now I feel like I'm in an entirely new ballpark. I am 5 months into my first job on a medical/surgical floor. The plan was to do a year here to get experience and then try to check out different options. But now I just found out I'm due in November and I completely need to reevaluate things. My questions for you guys are: 1) What kind of jobs are good for new moms? I really really don't want to work full time but I'm not sure how to swing it. Currently I work three 12 hour night shifts. I feel like with this schedule I would not get quality time with my baby. 2) This is probably a super long shot but how likely is it to find RN work from home jobs? I'm thinking I already have one strike against me because I'm a newer nurse... Thanks everyone :)

Yeah more similar to a wellness coach. I'm still learning about it too because I think it's something that nurses have started pursuing more only within the past few years. But when I think about it, it makes a good deal of sense to me. When you think about all the MLM companies that have wellness coaches who have not been trained other then a 3 month certification or what have you and they are the primary market for helping people live healthy lives then it seems like nurses have a huge opportunity to step in. We're the ones who see first hand the effects of chronic disease and lifestyle choices so it makes sense for us to be in the front lines of teaching healthy lifestyles. Yet, the opportunities to do this seem relegated to 5 minutes at the bedside until inevitably the patient will be back in a few months. I just have a strong desire to help people thrive and not exist in the revolving door of the hospital so looking for a way to make this happen.

From my understanding nurse coaches aren't for nurses they're for patients. Primarily, to help promote health and wellness.

We do have the parameters but I guess I just get tripped up with pain management overall because if different situations. For example, there was a patient who had minimal pain but then it got pretty high so the parameters indicated morphine. I gave it to her but the effects didn't last very long so then I felt like I had to keep giving her morphine because she still met the parameters. She had Percocet ordered as well but didn't meet those parameters because her pain was higher but I just felt like if I was able to give her that it would've been more helpful overall.

Hello everyone, I have a few questions about pain management. I'm a new nurse working on a med/surg floor. The main pain meds we give are Norco, Percocet, and morphine. And here are my questions... 1) Can someone advise me on what to give primarily for post-surgical patients? A fellow nurse told me that Percocet lasts longer than morphine but when I looked it up on the Davis Drug guide it looked like they both last about the same amount of time? 2) Can anyone offer good pain management techniques in general when the patient has multiple pain meds ordered? 3) Can anyone recommend a good drug guide app that's free? Thanks everyone. I just found out our hospital policy when running primary ABX is to change the tubing each time a new bag is hung. So looks like I'll just be going through some tubing.

So what's the general consensus? Is it specific to the hospital to run primary or not?
