  1. @suec_83 Hi, sorry about the late reply. I'm not ever on here anymore because...uh, nursing school. Haha. Congrats on your placement! I just finished block 1 so I can now report back on what my schedule was. First 8 weeks: M 10:30-12:00 - Math Review, 12:00-3:00 - Lecture, 3:30-6:30 - Lab T 10:30-12:00 - NUR Review, 12:00-3:00 - Lecture, 3:30-6:30 - Lab W OFF Th 11:00-6:00 - Lab F OFF Second 8 weeks: M 12:00-2:30 - Lecture T 12:00-2:30 - Lecture W OFF Th 2:00-10:00 - Clinicals F 2:00-10:00 - Clinicals I hope this helps. I did work full-time for the first 3 months of the semester (I do NOT recommend) and all of that time in between when I wasn't working, I was studying. I did enjoy the afternoon/evening schedule because it allowed me to spend mornings studying. I generally woke up at 5-6 on days before class, was at the library by 7-8, and had a solid 3 hours to review things. That's just what worked for me - it's different for everyone, of course. I wish you the best of luck :)
  2. @Bailando I took both the review and the math course. I stayed all the way through both but I wish I had dropped them. If I were you, I would sign up, attend the classes, and if they're not helpful to you, drop them by the withdraw date. I am pretty strong in math so the extra practice was unnecessary for me. Besides, you learn the math skills in your nursing classes. Take the course if you think you'll need that additional reinforcement. The structured review course just went over the previous week's material and was sort of an open forum for questions regarding those topics. Once again, unnecessary for me - I would have rather had the extra hour to study before class. tldr; Sign up, drop later. Figure out if you need the extra classes. I know they helped some people in my class, I was just not one of them. I hope this helped! Good luck with block 1!
  3. @suec_83: Yes, MCC was my first choice! Choice 1: Mesa CC Afternoon/Evening Choice 2: Mesa CC Morning Choice 3: Scottsdale Community College (the only other option within a reasonable drive)
  4. @Patty12: I was placed at Mesa CC's Southern & Dobson in the traditional afternoon evening slot - not the CEP. (Beware: afternoon/evening is misleading because my classes start in the late AM and end around 7PM.) And thanks on the congrats! @NursingAZ: I posted a very, very stripped down version of my schedule in response to someone else earlier in this thread so you can look there. As of right now, class three full days a week (lab/lecture), SNA meetings once a month, and I am not sure about clinicals.
  5. In response to Patty12 and Sofia15... Hi there! I am not sure of my exact time stamp but I submitted my application sometime mid-October 2014 and I was placed on Apr 20 2015. I haven't checked the nursing placement site recently but I do believe they have updated it to reflect that the average wait list has gone down significantly ~ 6 mos. After accepting placement, you will receive a welcome package #1 that will require you to do more things before the advisers register you for classes. Upon registration, you'll receive welcome package #2 which includes a tentative schedule and more information (re: uniforms, textbooks, online resources, additional supplies, etc.) and a list of even more things to do. To be honest...placement snuck up on me. I anticipated a much longer wait than what I experienced. I begin block 1 in just a couple of weeks. I hope that you guys don't have to wait forever and good luck with everything! If you have any other questions, please post to this thread as I am unable to receive PM's just yet - I am still a new member here. But I do keep this thread bookmarked in hopes of meeting my future classmates. Cheers!
  6. I've heard that volunteering can offer great networking opportunities and may open some doors for later on, so thank you all for your advice. I'm not looking for anything in particular, I just would like to contribute. I appreciate your pointing me in the right direction!
  7. It varies from one school to the next but I can tell you about my experience. I attended CC for all of my pre-requisites and will begin my nursing classes in the Fall. At my college, there are pre-requisites and co-requisites for nursing. Pre-requisites are required before you even apply to the nursing program (pre-waitlist, if your school has one). Co-requisites are courses that you can take while in nursing school and/or are on the waitlist. I got all of my co-requisites out of the way early so I can devote all of my time to just my nursing studies. It looks like your schedule has all pre-requisites. I took general requirement classes (like english composition 1/2, algebra 1/2, statistics, sociology, etc.) before I even applied to the program. I tested out of taking bio and chem but you may have to take both. A&P 1 was a pre-req. A&P 2 was a co-req (as mentioned earlier, I did those both before I even applied), as were microbiology and biochemistry. I don't think your advisor made a mistake. He/she is setting you up with the courses you need to submit an application to the nursing program. I hope this helped in some way; best of luck! EDIT: Wow! I didn't realize there were 6 pages of replies prior to my own and after reading through all of them, my response seems redundant. (Forgive me, still new here.) OP, please listen to the above posters. They offer sound advice!
  8. Hi all! I begin nursing school this coming Fall (2015) and I was wondering if there are healthcare-related volunteer positions that do not require a degree. The Red Cross does not offer anything in my area (Phoenix) and I am currently looking into a spot at the Ronald McDonald House. The Arizona Nurses Foundation (AZNF) provides scholarships for nursing students who exhibit leadership qualities and although I have those in my current industry (restaurant/hospitality), I have nothing to contribute in terms of healthcare. I fear that this may affect my eligibility for the AZNF scholarship. I am looking for something that I can pursue part-time ( Any advice on where to start? Thanks in advance for your responses! -Allie
  9. I posted my schedule for MCC's program (Southern & Dobson campus) in response to the OP; you can see it above. Classes are chosen by the nursing dept. advisors - unfortunately you do not get to pick them yourself. I had the same thought as you when I picked the afternoon/evening option in hopes that I would be available to work a part-time day job. It didn't turn out that way for me due to the refresher courses I am taking that begin at 10:30A. If not for those, my regular courses would begin around noon. I will also add that during the 2nd half of the semester, my lab times change; they run from about 7:30A-3:30 P, despite signing up for the afternoon/evening program. I am fortunate in that I am able to budget and work my job schedule around my classes; I hope it all works out for you! I just wanted you to be aware that the school's interpretation of "afternoon/evening" is pretty loose. Good luck! -Allie
  10. Hi, I was placed in MCC's afternoon/evening classes for Fall '15 as well. I am nervous and excited...and pretty relieved that the application process is over with - what a headache! As of right now, my weeks 1-8 class schedule is: M: 10:30A-6:30P T: 10:30A-6:30P Th: 11A-6:30P The schedule changes after the first 8 weeks and I am assuming we receive our clinical hours/locations at orientation on the 18th. I hope to see you there! -Allie
