  1. Hi nurses! About 10 years ago i started getting my prereqs done and finished in 2012 from Folsom Lake College. I took forever, sometimes taking one class at a time, because I was a working single mom. I kept getting rejected from the ADN programs, and my GPA in the science classes was too low (I got all Bs, but C's in chemistry). I would never make it into Sac State's program. I about gave up but having my second baby made my heart hurt to really want to try again! California programs are too imacted, so I've been looking at private schools, which are more expensive, which is why I have been pushing it off for so long! I just felt bad getting rejected but I know I would make a great nurse! I LOVED the nurses at the hospital where I gave birth, my love for the job started before my first (who is almost 13!) was born back when her dad was in and out of the hospital all the time. My question is, does anyone know of any good nursing programs in the Sacramento area? I can't do University of Phoenix ad Samuel Merritt since you have to have a bachelors to get into those. I was looking at Chamberlain College, but I don't know anything about them. I was also looking into Carrington. I went there for massage therapy back when it was Western Career College, but they want me to do the LVN program and THEN take their RN program, which I am not excited about. I have a associates degree and all prereqs are done, so I don't like that they they want me to spend ll my money on their LVN and then spend more for their RN. I just want to get my RN. Not that there is anything against LVN, I just keep hearing that they're being phased out in California. I want to work in a hospital and if I had to to LVN again, and had a shot at getting a job and being in a hospital helping patients, I would do it! So Chamberlain or Carrington? Anyone have any thoughts? Maybe other colleges I haven't thought of? Thank you so much! Nurses are amazing people and I want to be a part of it!
  2. That is exactly what I'm worried about. Any for profit school would be happy to take my money and promise me full time employment after completing the program, but that may not be the case. Again, I've worked for proprietary education before so I know their game. I'm just getting desperate to get into nursing. If I could move out of state, I would, but I have a daughter and my ex and I split custody so it isn't that simple. Thank you for the feedback!
  3. You misinterpreted what I was saying. I am not saying I'm somehow too good for the LVN program, I'm just pointing out that all my prereques are done, and I didn't understand why I couldn't then apply for the RN program in a for-profit school. All For Profit schools are telling me I cant get into the RN program which makes no sense since with my AS, I could get into an RN program if it wasn't so impacted. At a community college that offers both LVN and RN,yes I can see getting the LVN because I thought RN was more competitive, but I could be wrong. My associates is in biology and is intended for nursing, not just an AA. I would love to get into a LVN program IF I could still get a job The reason for my question is that I'm worried to pay a ton of money for a program only to get out and not be able to find a job. California is tough. Thanks for all the feedback!
  4. I am near Sacramento, California. I was looking at Carrington College, but again, I did my massage therapy cert through them and I worked for a different vocational school teaching massage and I know those schools are about making money...that's what worries me about doing a program like that. Of course they would be happy to take my money! Although Carrington is a lot better than the school I worked for, which has since been shut down.
  5. Where do you live? This is the same thing that happened to me. I live in California and am thinking about an LVN program. I have an associates degree, my prereqs are done but I am tired of waiting to get into a community college. I'm about to be 33 and I have been woking towards this since i was 24- the time has come!
  6. Thank you so much for this post! My grades in the bio classes were just under a 3.0, and community colleges are basically telling me I am too stupid to be a nurse, which I worked so hard for! I wanted to be a nurse because my ex husband got really sick with Crone's and even had endocarditis and had heart surgery right after his 24th birthday. Living in a foreign country away from family, it was up to me to clean his bandages and stoma, and help with his colostomy bag. I saw what the nurses did and it didn't scare me, it inspired me. I am so tired of being told by colleges that just because my grades weren't the best, I won't make a good nurse! I have the heart and I am not a idiot! I took the TEAS and got a 78%. Chemistry brought my grades down big time and discouraged me a lot. I am tired of being discouraged and am trying to come up with ways to get into nursing one way or another because I know I would make a great one. This post was really helpful, thank you for sharing!
  7. Hi all! I finished all my pre-requisites in 2012 and am so tired of applying to community colleges and getting shut down. My GPA isn't a 4.0, so I can't get into Sac State's program. I was looking at Carrington and Blake Austin, but they will only let me do Vocational nursing, even though I have an Associate's degree. I'm asking anyone, from your experience, is it even worth it to get the vocational nursing cert? It seems like a waste of time and money and I had heard years ago they were phasing that out. I went to Carrington when it was Western Career College for massage, and I taught massage therapy to students at a different vocational school, so I know what those schools are all about ($$$). I don't want to get ripped off, but one school is telling me I have to get the LVN first, then I can apply for their RN program...even though I already have the prereques done! I have an associates degree- I just can't get into the community colleges and I'm tired of waiting. Any advice or feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
