For my first semester of nursing school: Monday: 1-3 PM Fundamentals Tuesday: Off Wednesday 8-10 AM Lab Practicum, 1-4 PM Fundamentals Thursday: Clinical Prep at the Hospital after 12PM which would take me about 4 hours to finish. Friday: 7-1 PM, Clinical at Hospital I had free time, but it was used to practice skills for checkout, study for my exams and fit in part-time hours for work.

I occasionally listen to lecture but sometimes, I feel as thought most teachers tend to be very monotone and do not implicate the importance of certain areas but rather say all of it is important. By no means are they required to tell us what we need to focus and study. I have tried reading before class and it does help as much of the information is re-iterated and shown but I will say it tends to get long and tedious due to how long the lesson plans can be.

Update of the semester that is coming to a close! I have currently brought my grade up and am comfortable with my grade thus far until today. We had a our Hesi Exam and I totally bombed it with score before 650 and I'm worried that I haven't been retaining or understanding everything that I have been taught. Should I be completely worried? My final is Monday and there is a high chance that I can pass but this just struck my built confidence that I regained.

I was so sad and kept beating myself up for how I did and today is a new day. I am currently taking Fundamentals of Nursing and Practicum Lab with clinical every Friday. I am passing practicum with flying colors and doing excellent in clinical but Fundamentals is not so hot. By bombed, I mean like below a C. I understand that nursing school is going to be different from other academics and prerequisites but, I've never received lower than a B as a final grade in any class I have taken. Obviously it takes more than regurgitating the information but it makes me feel as though I am just stupid in all honesty.

I had my third test and I bombed it completely, I am really contemplating whether this field is for me now. I do not know if I can do this because I am only one point away from failing and we still have three more tests but it is a risk as this point. I'm scared because I worked so hard to get to this point and now it feels as though I'm just giving up.

Thank you so much for your reply! I appreciate it! I am not expecting to be rich off nursing, it is more of the reality of where my income or expectations of living will be. My goal is actually to go to CRNA school and I have already started the pre-requisites of Organic Chemistry and Physics before I have finished nursing school.

That is pretty sweet. Do you currently work at a BJC affiliated hospital right now?

For the past few weeks, I have been attempting to re-read and stay on top of everything! I currently do have two part time jobs which may have influenced the way my test scores have shown. Thank you so much for making a positive note out of a rough situation I am in!

With the economy and time that the country has gone through and where I have heard some say there is a nursing shortage and then there are those who say the field is getting saturated. Let me clarify before I am judged negatively, I love nursing and its aspects but getting a reasonable wage of living is also a priority as it is the reason why we go to school and it is the main focus of what I am asking. A couple of friends of mine say they do not get paid well for their work as a nurse! I was wondering how much pay rates are now for new graduates or current workers of hospitals such as BJC, SSM, Mercy, etc?

I agree with everything you are saying 100%. I do not expect to given anything less or more than the next student but it is our first semester and as for most of us or any of us, we do not know how to study or comprehend most of the information we are given due to the vagueness that is translated through the lectures and clinical setting. It is possible that I am not digging deep enough, which if it is the case, I need to indulge myself further into the matter of my problem and find the root and source of it all.

I love how you have answered my questions so thoroughly. I am actually one of the youngest ones in my class as I am only 21 and going for my ADN at a community college and eventually getting my bachelors through a RN to BSN program. There are not really any study groups but we have instructors and students who I have talked to that are successful and have said I am doing the right kind of studying by it might be that I could not be actually applying the work or knowledge that I know to my full extent. I absolutely know that I am not alone but it could be also that this is brand new to me and I have not had a chance to integrate my mindset around the nature of this work.

I have recently attempted to try more nclex-styled questions and it has helped tremendously. However, I do not like skimming because it seems to slow me down when I feel as though I grasped enough of what was to be known within the chapter. Select all that apply are one of the hardest ones that I hate but I am beginning to familiarize myself with it. I currently use The Point and PrepU, do you recommend any resources or books?

Above average as in borderline low B to a high C. The kind of questions I get occasionally get wrong are either when two answers are close enough and I end up choosing the wrong one, select all that apply sometimes and ones where I second guess my first choice. I have spoken with the instructor whom I trust the most and I explained that I am may just be rambling but they do not particularly give us a guideline to idea of what to study. They give us power points and expect us to just know the material from each chapter which is vague and causes some confusion and anxiety on what to study. I am not blaming the faculty or curriculum in any way but they cannot expect us to succeed without guidance and further development of our intuition as student nurses. We all come from different backgrounds and feel as though I'm a disadvantage due to being a non-traditional student.

Currently, I am in my sixth week of nursing school and my test scores are slightly above average and not reflecting the time and energy spent in studying that I have been doing. I feel as though I'm not achieving the level of success that I should be able to. I read the chapters before class, made use of the resources and supplemental materials we have for our classes, put any extra time in when I can and it still feels as though I'm not doing enough. I am wanting to run for SNA president of my class but I do not feel as though it can be one who cannot score in the top percentage. Neither should it be an individual who should attempt to elect a student who does not seem to stay on top of academics. I'm not expecting a pity party but any realistic, honest criticism or experiences that would be relevant or relatable. Any advice, tips or words of encouragement?
