  1. I let my EMT-P expire from the NREMT. In California the levels are EMT and Paramedic. I don't have any medic experience other than paramedic school. I went to school in Kern County which has a large scope of practice and the ambulance companies are still the medical control. This isn't so for LA and you are right about their limited scope, but luckily I went to school in Kern County and got a greater experience because of it. I never quizzed the nursing students, it was the RNs, the preceptors that didn't know what the difference were. They werent ER nurses but I know that they didn't know because my fiance had her EMT and they thought she was the one with a higher level of care. I'm familiar with the differences in nursing and it wasn't that I was holding on to my paramedic identity. I knew during my paramedic clinicals that I wanted to be an RN. Thabks for your input though.
  2. I can do that, how would I go about changing my username then? EDIT: Clearly, I figured this out. Thanks for the warning.
  3. In my experience during nursing school, many of the nurses didn't know what a Paramedic was compared to an EMT. Many times they believed that the EMT was higher than a Paramedic. They obviously didn't know what the scope of practice these licenses had. I thought going into nursing school that I might be able to use my experience and training as an EMT and Paramedic toward getting a job in the ER, but now I'm not so sure. Does anyone know how nurse managers or hiring managers will look at Paramedic/EMT licenses in relation to an ER RN position. Will they consider it experience or disregard it because it isn't Registered Nurse experience?
  4. My ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and work in the ER. Is this common? From my searches online, I found one program that offers the NP with a specialty in emergency care. I'd love to hear from other ER nurses about this or others who are interested in the same.
  5. I'm sure we've all experienced something that shocked us from nursing school. I think I was fortunate that none of them put me in an ethical dilemma, but I could share one story to start. On my way to school I suffered some car trouble and I ended up being late to a test. I was allowed to take the exam and I finished it no problem and nothing excited happened here. Well after the exam the students had to drive back to the satellite campus where our program was held. When I walked into the building (mind you the hallways of the building) I was confronted by a teacher who gave me a "write-up" for disrupting the class. She said that my being late was the cause for the disruption. Shocked, that I was being written up for disrupting, when the entire time other student's phones went off and others showed up late even after me, I asked her if other students received the same write-up. Immediately this teacher started shouting at me calling me disrespectful and saying that I was unprofessional and began walking away shouting down the halls. I stood there dumbfounded because I asked a simple question. The entire class heard the commotion inside the halls and wondered what happened. In the end I talked to the dean about the teacher's behavior and she dismissed the write-up. I still have no idea why the teacher didn't just discuss things with me calmly and privately. Anyone else have any interesting horror stories?
  6. What is the outlook for men in nursing? I have heard previously that males are more desirable as employees because of physical strength and that they don't need to take as long of a maternity leave. I also realize that men are the minority currently and does that affect the eligibility of males to be hired?
  7. I've sent you a pm. I would be willing to relocate across country as well. I just got an interview for a hospital in LA. I got my ACLS and PALS, I'm also enrolling into a BSN program. I am applying anywhere (especially somewhere that I get good leads to) because I would rather start sooner than later. I am! I had an interview there already and am willing to relocate, I will send you a PM! Those are just the units I desire to work in, but I've applied to any unit.
  8. It worked fine for both me and my fiance. We got the good message and ended up passing. We live in CA and checked the results about 4 hours after and again the following day with the same message.
  9. I used the Saunders and the Mastery App as my two true resources. I also had a few other books which I used solely for practice test questions and only the last few days before the test. I think those two resources were the best out of all of the ones I purchased and had access to.
  10. Thank you for sharing with me your views. I will refrain from posting any new topics like this one as I do respect your opinion and do not wish to break any of the TOS of this site.
  11. Thank you for the 'warm' wishes, however, is there any advice or tips that you may be able to offer that could help me in the job hunt (other than not to post here)? This is in the "Nursing First Job Hunt Assistance" section after all.
  12. Not sure if you started the WGU program yet, but CSU San Marcos has an online program and it's a good alternative to WGU that I have found. Applications are being accepted and you can get the fee waived. I think I'll be pursuing this rather than WGU because of the CSU status and that clinicals or being employed is not a requirement. They focus on group projects more than paper writing from what I understand.
  13. Point me in the direction of your hospital and I'll apply...no restrictions other than me being located in California and preferring to do a phone interview.
  14. I can't PM yet, but I live in CA and am willing to relocate to Salt Lake City. I have friends there and like the area, any information you could PM me would be great! I'll send you a PM as soon as I can though.
  15. One of my phone interviews was for a position in Texas. I'm totally willing to relocate so I'll be applying to those jobs and I'll be sending you a PM too, thanks! EDIT: Actually I don't have the required amount of posts to be able to PM you, but I will as soon as I am able to.
  16. I've been applying to as many jobs as I can. Probably averaging around 10-20 a day with individualized cover letters. I'm doing what I can on that end. I'm just making this post because I figured there might be a nurse manager on here wondering why the last nurse she hired wasn't what she thought they would be. Well, I'll be that nurse and more. So if you know that your hospital is looking for a motivated nurse for essentially any department (I'm most interested in Emergency and ICU) then please leave a comment with your hospital's website and I'll put my application in there too. I'm an ADN student from CA and its been less than a month since I passed the NCLEX, but I feel as though only two phone interviews aren't enough. Any tips on how to become a better candidate? You can check my profile above for all of my background information if that helps. I'm a great interviewer, I just need to get to that point. Any tips or job leads are appreciated! Who knows maybe someone else will see those tips and leads and get a position out of it if I don't. (Also I read the terms and didn't interpret any of them to make me feel like this type of post isn't allowed and if it is I apologize in advance)
