Quitting Less than 90 days???
Thank you. I read that alot on these forums where new nurses aren't giving it a chance. You are right. I will stick it out. It's been getting better but I've also been getting more patient load as orientation progresses which can explain why I don't feel like I'm improving, but I am because I am taking on one extra pt a week until I reach five pts. I did apply for the dialysis position. I can always decline, but we'll see. I go in tonight. This will be my first day with FOUR pts. Excited but scared.

Quitting Less than 90 days???
I'm a Med-Surg RN with a 1:5 nurse to pt ratio working in a Level 1 Trauma hospital. I like that I'm never bored and I'm always learning something new. However, almost everyday I get off shift, I feel like a failure. I'm also a single dad and before I started working, my soon to be ex worked days and it worked out for the both of us with our 3yr old son. I have no family here. I also feel like I'm sleeping my life away when I'm off because technically, I do work on my days off up to 7am so it feels like I have no days off. My unit has a dayshift position open, but at this point, I see Med-surg isn't for me. I've always preferred a day clinic setting and now a dialysis position opened. Should I apply being that I worked at my current unit less than 90 days? or switch to dayshift on my current floor? Should I stick it out? Part of me wants to quit because I don't feel like I can keep up with the acuity level and the temptation to fall asleep from 2-4am.

Giving a PRN Medication on Accident
That's what I thought. My orientation has been so conflicted, I've had to read the BON and hospital policy. I don't want to not do something, if something were to happen like that to me. The question I got on my assignment stated This patient scenario took place at 2100. Patient goes to bed at 2300. Trazadone (wrong med) given instead of requested (Tramadol). Answer was a report should be written. Preceptor said no because it was PRN hs, and though it was the wrong med, the patient has prescriptions for both and to just monitor and document "given" on the MAR.

Giving a PRN Medication on Accident
I am currently in orientation and my educator and my preceptor stated two different things. I was told by the educator that if a PRN medication Trazodone (tx insomnia) is given before bed instead of PRN Tramadol (opioid pain med the pt actually asked for) that an adverse action report be written. However, my preceptor stated that it doesn't have to be, just as long as we inform the patient, document it was given, and we follow up and because both meds were PRN medications, the patient shouldn't have adverse reactions. I'm confused? So because both are medications the patient is assigned that an incident report nor an adverse action report needs to be written as long as we document and follow up?

Just earned my RN but I can't work for another year due to deployment. Advice?
That sounds like a great idea and I hope to continue my education online RN-BSN as well. One of my courses is a practicum and I sure hope your idea is something I am able to do. At this point, it seems that's the only choice I have. Thank you for a quick response. I'm sad that I just got my first RN job and may lose my skills before I can even use them. Have you been through a similar situation? If so was it hard to integrate back into being a nurse?

Just earned my RN but I can't work for another year due to deployment. Advice?
I am currently a logistics officer set to deploy next month. I just earned my RN degree and am starting my first RN job next week. However, I ask for advice because I am wondering how nurses are able to go back to work after a year off from working as one?

Hurst Review Scores?
I just got done taking it. Not sure if I passed. I didn't get any math questions nor other alternative questions, nothing except a ton of SATA and regular multiple choice.

Hurst/LaCharity/NCSBN Scores???
I did the live review and reviewed the 14 day trial once. I'm thinking Monday/Tuesday I'll review the book to refresh. I only did PDA questions.

Hurst/LaCharity/NCSBN Scores???
I think with LaCharity, I got too burnt out. I spent pretty much this week doing 300+ questions per day and reading the rationale. You think I'm overdoing it? It appears according to my scores, they are decreasing so maybe I need to take a day off? Not sure. I'm glad to hear Hurst is working out. I'm going to take a break on doing questions and go over the book again this weekend. Did you feel like you walked away feeling you knew most or some of the questions? or hardly any questions towards the end? From reading some of the posts, it sounds like it's better to walk away feeling like you failed than you pass because of the harder questions means you were above the passing range.

I completed my BSN today. Feel free to ask any questions
I see. It sounds like the way to go is to the Com Health class before the practicum. I also have biochemistry. That's the only non nursing class I have. I don't remember how many CUs I need, have to look at that. Just focused on the number of classes and thanking the Lord I don't have to take math! :) Wish me luck on this journey and congrats for getting through your's

I completed my BSN today. Feel free to ask any questions
Do you recall what classes you took in order? I'm not trying to copy your method but it would give me an idea of what classes I can expect to take. I appreciate your response. I'm real nervous.

I completed my BSN today. Feel free to ask any questions
I am starting Feb 16 and was wondering what is the best way to complete the RN-BSN the fastest? I would like to finish in six months if possible due to a deployment. I heard it's not a great idea to tell the advisors that because they want to make sure the college gets more money by keeping you longer. I also heard other things like not being able to do a community practicum class until I'm done with the community health class, etc. At this point I really just want to know where to start? I've done all my non-nursing courses except biochemistry. Just not sure what classes to take first or even what 12 credits to take first?

missing pinning ceremony for dying father's birthday
Thanks everyone for the advice and for some, your empathy. We are in a caring profession and it's nice to know other nurses have your back during times like these. Have a great new years everyone and wish me luck I take my NCLEX the 19th.

Hurst Review Scores?
Great to hear! Thanks for the quick response. I did the live class once as well as the 14 day online trial to view all the videos taught in the live class and the specialty videos. I also have the NCSBN and LaCharity's Delegation book but not sure if I have enough time. I test the 19th. I'm thinking of testing earlier because I'm just ready to get it over with at this point and no matter when, I'll be a wreck regardless lol!

Below are my scores. Anyone do about the same or worse and still passed the nclex? Is anyone using just the Hurst Review to prep for it? I'm a bit nervous about this. I think it will get better. I'm hoping for better sleep when I take the nclex. 80, 79, 81, 75, 83, 86

missing pinning ceremony for dying father's birthday
UPDATE: My dad passed away, he got to see his only grandchild for the first time, and I was able to get my own pinning ceremony. I was in shock regarding the ceremony, because though I asked one instructor to perform it in her office, we ended up going to a bigger conference room where most the faculty were in attendance! I received tons of hugs and the professor who pinned me asked me to come back and teach with her someday. I was flattered. Furthermore, my classmate texted me last week stating I didn't miss much of the ceremony. For one thing, when they called out the honor grads, her name wasn't called even though she received a letter from the college a few days later stating she was indeed an honor grad. I would have been upset. I was also an honor grad but at least I wasn't there to go through that.

missing pinning ceremony for dying father's birthday
Thanks for cheering me up and letting me know I'm not a terrible person for not going. The only reason why I couldn't have my dad pin me at school or where I live is because I live in Texas and he lives in Oregon and he's bedridden and can't fly. My mom can't even go either because she takes care of him through the state and my sister is too young to care for him while she's gone. Hence, I can't be at two places at once. I will however, ask my school if it's ok that I fly back to have my dad pin me as my own ceremony. I wouldn't think that would be an issue. Thank you everyone!
