The module is planned with due regard to the issues of care, compassion and communication, organisational aspects of care, infection prevention and control, nutrition and fluid maintenance, and medicines management. These essential nursing skills will be underpinned with a sound physiological basis, particularly with reference to service user observations. Successful completion of this module would facilitate students to practice in a compassionate, respectful way maintaining dignity and wellbeing and communicating effectively. [/TD] [/TR] [TR] [TD]Health in Society (30 Credit Double Module) [/TD] [TD]This core module aims to empower nurses to recognize and scale up their important role in the design, monitoring and delivery of services to improve health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. Students will gain an awareness of health promotion/education to tackle health inequalities and support behavioural changes in an individual and within society. Nursing will be explored within the context of current socioeconomic, health and demographic trends taking a holistic lifespan approach. Four areas will be covered during the module – these will be the respiratory system, cardio and neurovascular disease and renal disease. Principles of assessment and relevant interventions are discussed and clinical skills related to each area undertaken. It is concerned with human experiences as individuals, families, groups and communities across the life span. The module aims to develop students' understanding of how peoples' lifestyles, environments and the location of care delivery influence their health and wellbeing. The need for professional and effective communication, both verbal and written is seen as paramount and these principles underpin the whole module philosophy. Students will be expected to demonstrate the ability to effectively and safely apply these concepts to the clinical situation using field specific case studies that relate to both hospital and community settings. Students are expected to explore a range of sources of information and critically reflect on how this influences their decision-making in clinical practice. The focus for enquiry is the student's choice. It is expected that students will enquire on important areas of their practice relative to their field of nursing. Equal emphasis is placed upon the student's development of prioritisation and rationalisation skills to ensure safe and appropriate nursing care interventions are planned in response to changes in service users' conditions. It will ensure our students have a robust understanding of the importance of policy as applied to practice.
