  3. I'm not sure where to start but I've been orienting in L&D for 2 months and have 1 month left. So far I still feel very incompetent and frustrated. whenever i get a new preceptor a few that I go 2 steps backward. I feel so frustrated that I'm getting nightmares of worse case scenerios and in my dreams i just freeze up or if I go get some help there's no one to help me. I really not getting much feed back and I will get my evaluation at the end of my oriention but in all honesty I'm suprise someone hasn't told me that L&D isn't for me. I know I tend to be hard on myself but I fee I should be feeling better about nursing by now. I became a nurse because I really wanted to go into this specialty but now I'm having second thoughts I'm even considering quitting. sometimes I wish they would just tell me that this field isn't for me.
  4. I work in l&d and so far I have had a couple of deliveries. But I'm still feeling very inadequate. I have a couple of things that bother me for example when giving vitamin K I'm afraid of injecting the baby, I mean I know the site of injection is the middle third of the vastus lateralis, but I still feel uncomfortable any tips? Another thing that bothers me is my documentation of the patient while recovering. Any advice or any book I can buy that can help me with my documentation. How many deliveries did you have before you began feeling comfortable?

Thank you all for replying. First of all I must say that yesterday was my first day of orientation and I guess I'm already getting a little nervous. I feel uncomfortable with fetal strips and I will be studying them but I still feel unsure. I just feel uncomfortable charting things that I'm not absolute sure of. Oh yeah I was at triage. Can someone give me an example of one day of your orientation, Did you get to do anything on your own in the beginning? Did you have to follow your preceptor all the time? Thanks in advance. PSU - perinatal surveilance unit

Is 12 wks of orientation for L&D. Ob triage, and PSU enough?
  7. Thanks for the replies. I have oficially accepted a position in one of the hospitals. I'm sooo excited and looking forward to working in L&D. I'm also nervous but I know this is for me. :) This is a level 3 unit and they have about 300 births per month. I will also be floating to the triage unit.
  8. So far I had two interviews at two differrent hospitals. I'm not sure what to think since they were so different. In one hospital the manager was very friendly and did most of the talking. In the other hospital the manager was very quiet and I was the one doing most of the talking at first I wondered if she was even interested in me and then after a while she seemed interested.... Both of them said they would call my references but that it would take two weeks to get back to me because they still had to interview other people......... Does this indicate anything at all? Oh yeah one interview was for L&D and the other for mother/baby
  9. Thank you all for your encouraging replies! I have an interview this tuesday :) I hope everything goes well. I have read all the interview pointers and questions that have been posted in this site and they are very helpful. Other than the standard questions, what kind of questions did you guys get to test your critical thinking skills? For example, did you get a scenerio to see how you would react to that specific situation?
  10. Thank you guys. I just finished applying for the position. Your right all they can do is not call me........but hopefully they will :)
  11. I'm a new grad and would like to apply for mother/baby or L&D but most hospitals require 1 year experience. Would I still be considered for this positions if I apply?
  12. Thank very much for your responses. Actually they have helped me alot :)
  13. I know how you feel too. When my computer stopped at 75 I was ready to cry. I couldn't even think about anything else for the next two days. I'll have my fingers cross for you.
  14. HI! Can someone explain the difference between level I and level II for L&D Thank You
