VIU sept 2015
Not too sure about other areas of Nanaimo but I live downtown just off commercial street and I love it! It is great, there are many food options within walking distance and the sea walk is only a block away. Port Place Mall is also within walking distance which is awesome! There is everything you need there Thriftys, London Drugs, a large Walk-In Clinic, Starbucks, BCL etc. I have lived in North Nanaimo before and think it would be extremely inconvenient for VIU, it is also just inconvenient in general, everything is big box stores and nothing is really walkable. I can only function in that area driving everywhere. If you are looking for a condo to rent my favourite buildings are Studio NA, Pacifica (very expensive but gorgeous), and Vevo. There are also some places on Cameron Island that have spectacular views but the rent is even higher than Pacifica which is a newer building. Registered for courses today! Anyone else in Group A?

Has anyone heard anything back yet from VIU?!! Still no letter yet for me... they really like making us sweat it out eh.

VIU sept 2015
I have not heard anything back yet... I know that grades must be submitted by the end of month. I am assuming following that people will start to hear back. I would guess people high up on the acceptance list would hear back in the first few weeks of April, and the people on the wait list would hear back by the end of the month type of thing. Have you heard back from any other schools you have applied to? Is this your first year applying to nursing programs?

VIU sept 2015
Hi! I was in contact with Donna to really confirm how VIU is seeing my grades, it is a good thing I did because I was upgrading my grade 12 English which I did not end up needing to do because my English was already showing for them as an A+! I did not realize my A in my University children's literature course would bump up my English 12 mark. rkd101 I also find it crazy that a 4.0 was wait-listed! I wish they would reveal how they decide on a group of people that have the same GPA. They must have some kind of system to determine within the group at the bottom level of being accepted, of the people who have the same GPA who gets accepted and who gets wait-listed. I am not sure if it would be based on when you applied that seems pretty unfair to me. Have you heard of this being the system from somewhere/someone? I would guess that it may be determined by amount of post secondary education? I know when I spoke to one of VIU's advisers he mentioned that my first degree would help me, not sure if he just meant with bumping up some of my high school marks or with that and other things... VictoriaTracey I am also excited to get going with things, I only applied to VIU. I currently live in Nanaimo and wanted to stay here because of my job. I have not been accepted yet. I am quite hopeful, but it is still quite nerve racking only applying to one school. I will definitely post on here when/if I get my letter! I read the applicants last year heard back by the end of April, so max 7 weeks until we all find out about VIU!

BCIT Specialty Programs + job market
Hi all, I am currently in the process of applying to nursing and want to be sure I am entering into a program that is going to eventually get me where I want. I know the job market in BC and Alberta for new grads is getting pretty bleak. I am wondering if this is still the case when you complete a specialty program? I am interested in Neonatal, which I know you can complete directly after your RN. And I am very interested in the Perioperative specialty program. From my understanding to complete that one you must have an industry sponsor. Does anyone have any information on obtaining an industry sponsor as a new grad or information on the job market for these two specialties as a new grad? Any advice or information you have would be wonderful!!!

BC Nursing Applications - Fall 2015
Hi! That is super helpful to hear! How are you enjoying the program so far? Since I have a degree in Kinesiology I believe my anatomy and physiology will transfer over and I will not need to take the Bio courses first year. I am however thinking about taking them again as a refresher. I used to TA cadaver anatomy for PT and OT students at UWO so I am thinking it may not be too much of an overload for me. How much of those two courses is physiology based?

VIU sept 2015
Hey VictoriaTracey! A first year student at VIU responded to another post of mine, she said she was put on the wait list last intake with a 4.0 GPA. She said she was only on the wait list for a week, so I would guess she was one of the first few if not the first person on the wait list. So, it does sound like depending on the applications this year that your GPA is going to be competitive. Have you been in contact with Donna Kist? She has been super helpful with all questions I have had. Hope to see you at VIU in September!!!

VIU sept 2015
Hi, Good to know about the waitlist! This is my first year applying to nursing, I started another thread for everyone applying to BC nursing schools for Sept 2015 that has a bunch of questions for people to fill out. It's hard to get an idea of where you stand and what to expect. What is your first choice school?

BC Nursing Applications - Fall 2015
Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a thread about September 2015 applications to BC nursing programs! I know we are all in that anxious phase where we just want to know where we stand and what to expect re our acceptance letters. What is your background? I am 26 (so will feel very old surrounded by students just coming out of high school lol) and I have a degree in Kinesiology from UWO. I am focused on Midwifery, however since it is next to impossible to get into in BC and Alberta I have decided an RN is where I need to start. What school/schools did you apply to? I applied to VIU only, because of my job I cannot move to attend a program. From what I understand it is a pretty competitive entry. I also heard from the admissions department that so far it is looking to be an extremely competitive year, which is not helping my nerves at all. If there is an interview is yours scheduled or has it occurred already? No interview for VIU. I find it a bit odd they accept based only on GPA from the four required courses. Anyone else have experience with VIU's process or why they do things differently? What is your submitted GPA (if you feel comfortable sharing)? My grades for the 4 required courses are 2 As and 2 A+s, leaving me with a calculated GPA by VIU of 4.165. What information have you gained from advisers you have spoken to? I found the advisers at VIU extremely helpful. They let me know that they receive approximately 570-600 applications every year for the 72 spots. Four seats are reserved for Aboriginal students, I was told the GPA for these spots is also quite competitive. They also advised that for acceptance you are looking at having As and A+s (decreasing my anxiety slightly). It is still tough applying to only one program though, waiting for that letter to arrive will be torture! If anyone has any other questions they are curious about throw them in the mix!

VIU sept 2015
Hi! I can't speak to any other schools but I applied to VIU for Sept 2015 and met with a few of the academic advisers there. They go only off the GPA from your 4 required courses, although these grades can be bumped up if you took an equivalent course at a higher level. For example by Grade 11 Chem component was bumped to an A+ from an A because I got an A in Grade 12 Chemistry. The same is true if you have taken any at the University level. One of the advisers let me know that approx 570-600 students apply each year for the 72 spots. Of these 72 spots, 4 are reserved for Aboriginal students, I was told these spots are also competitive. The adviser mentioned that to get in you hopefully have As and A+s. I do find it a bit strange that VIU goes solely off GPA; no interview, personal background, or volunteer/work experience. But VIU definitely does not sound like a lottery system from what I have been told. Does anyone know any details about the other application/acceptance systems?
