  1. Okay so I am a college freshman, currently in elementary education. I absolutely hate it. I want to switch to nursing which has always been in the back of my mind, but my school unfortunately does not exactly have a nursing program. I absolutely love my school, and I would hate to transfer. My mom doesn't even want me to transfer. She told me to get a degree in something like biology and then do a accelerated-bsn program somewhere, which doesn't sound like such a horrible idea, minus the money wasted which is kinda the thing stopping me. I really, really don't want to leave my school and the nursing "satellite" program that is connected to my school would technically also make me not a student here and according to the admissions office, "transferring your courses is extremely difficult and needs to be started as early as fall of your freshman year. Your highest chances of being admitted (64 seats available) is if you declared your major as pre-nursing in your freshman application). This discourages me a lot and pushes me more to pursue an accelerated program after graduation, which many girls on my campus are doing for this same reason (ridiculous that we have to do that in my opinion). My questions are: 1. Opinions on this?? Is it stupid to be so concerned about not wanting to leave my school? I worked my butt off to get to this school and leaving would more than bum me out, but at the same time, the career comes first. 2. If I did pursue a bachelor's degree in something besides nursing and then went on to do an accelerated program, which would (generally, I know course load varies at different schools) be the best major to choose? I heard biology actually isn't a good choice because the course load does not even close to overlap, but I'm not sure what else. Obviously I would take courses according to pre-reqs of the nursing schools I would later to apply to, but what majors are reccomendations to possibly declare? Thanks so much, please be honest if this is stupid because I may/may not need some sense knocked into me!
  2. I will be finishing my junior year of high school in a month and I'm so stressed out! I understand you don't need to know your major, but in my case, I kind of do. See, I am torn between being an education major (elementary) or a nursing major (BSN). Where I live, you don't need to go away to a $30,000 a year school to get your BSN, but with education you kind of do because of the competition. So I sort of need to know, and my problem is that I absolutely cannot decide. My parents want me to be a nurse and I do too but the thing that gets to me is the wacky schedule and the lack of respect. Also, soooo many people say "Do not go into nursing", that goes for education too, but so many nurses hate their jobs. I love the job description, the pay, and the fulfillment you'd get from the job because I have a passion for helping others, but working nights, holidays, and weekends? I know you get used to it but I want a family one day and I feel like that's just tough. People say it's flexible but how is working on holidays flexible, lol? Overall, I think I'd love the job because like I said, I love to help people and I love medicine. Part of me also wants to be a teacher because I love kids and the whole aspect of education is cool to me. Also, the schedule (Mon-Fri 7-3 but there is also the taking your work home aspect) The problem with teaching is the pay and lack of jobs. I know the pay isn't terrible or anything, especially because you get summers off and lots of other days off too. Pay isn't that big of a deal though, I've just heard horror stories of many ending up without jobs. I love the idea of being able to teach children. These are two jobs that I have wanted to be since I was a little girl and it never occurred to me how hard this choice would end up being!! I know you'll probably say it's too early to make this decision but I decide on colleges starting in 4 months and I need to know where I'll be attending, you know? SO, my question is, what are the pros and cons of both? Could I go wrong with either? Would it be better to start out as a nursing major first or a education major and then maybe switch? Is it common to major in something else before majoring in nursing? Thank you for your help!
  3. Ok so I am a junior in high school and for years I have dreamed of becoming a nurse. Its the only career I can actually see myself doing and I love to help others and am fascinated with medicine. My question is, where do I start? All I know for sure is that over the summer after I graduate high school I am going to get my CNA at my community college. I really want to go to University of Illinois - Chicago and would love to get into their nursing school, as it is one of the best in the state. I have the grades and ACT to get into their college but the nursing program depends on college grades so I don't know about that yet. I know it's very competitive but what can I do to get ahead? Will being a CNA boost my chances? I want to go from CNA to BSN, you can do that right? Also, am I supposed to apply to their Liberal Arts college and say I'm a nursing major or do I say pre-nursing? Sorry so many questions, but I am at the point of junior year where we need to come up with our college plans so I want to know the details! Also could you provide me with some more information about the job? I've read just about every thread on allnurses lol but any more info about nursing school, some stories, and the job in general would be awesome! Thank you so much.
