  1. These are some of the study tips that I have used: 1) Use other resources such as: Youtube, Khan Academy ...etc to help fill in the gaps between the book and lectures. 2) Record your lectures - You can re-listen to the lectures while driving or working out or just recapping what you might have missed. 3) Study while doing an activity, like walking or pacing, this may keep the boring subjects more interesting and in theory, get more oxygen to your brain. 4) Mnemonics, catchy rhythm, rhyming – This will help with memorizing, I used this a lot in Anatomy and Physiology (think the rapping professor). 5) Know the material well enough that you can teach someone. If you know the material well enough that you can teach another member of the class or someone at home, this will solidify your understanding. 6) Do not procrastinate – Memorizing large amounts of information at in a short time span will only hurt you. Some may say they work well under pressure, but when there is a lot of material that one needs to learn, it might make you panic rather than help. 7) Review new and old material 8) Reward yourself, this does not need to be big. When you reached a goal, no matter how small, reward yourself with something you enjoy, maybe a small snack or a small break. This will help re-motivate you. 9) Keep your mood and spirit up and don't get discouraged.
  2. Wanderlust2, Do not feel defeated. I was in your shoes not too long ago (I was 31 when I took Anatomy and Micro). In my crazy mind, I thought I could do both Anatomy and Micro in the same semester (thank goodness I was able to get good grades for both of those classes). I think when you are feeling a little defeated, you should stop, take a breath, and think of why you want to be a nurse. This usually gave me the motivation to study (a positive mind frame will help). If possible, study groups do help, since if you can teach someone the material, it means you know the material. I did not have time for study groups as I also worked full time and the students in my class did not work or worked full time. This is how I was successful in anatomy: 1) When doing homework, I would go over the homework and try to talk out the material, as if I was teaching someone else. 2) The Practice Anatomy Lab CD helped tremendously for lab tests. 3) I would make flashcards and labeled them one side with labels (ABC or 123) and the other side the exact same picture with the answers. 4) I would have my husband quiz me randomly on the material. He would have a set of my notes and while watching TV, eating dinner or on our nightly walks, he would randomly quiz me or ask me questions. (This is again the whole teaching theory) 5) I would study while standing up or walking more often than sitting at my desk. (My Micro teacher suggested this, the theory of getting more oxygen to your brain and decreasing the likelihood of getting bored) 6) Youtube, Khan Academy, Armando Hasudungan | Biology and Medicine videos (he does a tutorial and draws out each system of the human body with explanation) helped me tremendously. I hope that helps. Stay positive, you can do it!
  3. Hello SoonerBredExpat, Thank you for the information you have provided, it is greatly appreciated. I can't wait until I am in your shoes and start the Clinical part of the program. I have heard so many great things at WGU's Pre Licensure program. Normally, I would wait and talk to my mentor, but my birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and wanted to ask for items that would be useful for both the boot camp and clinical rotations (I am staying positive and assume that I will make it to the next round). From my understanding, I would not know who my mentor is until the end of September.
  4. Hello centercourt2015, I spoke with my Enrollment Counselor and she stated that they do admit 12 students in the pre-nursing and admit 10 in the clinical portion. ( I did read some where that this was not the case, CA only accepts 10 students.) I am so excited to be accepted and can't wait to start. I will be having my intake interview tomorrow. I was wondering, for those that have gone through the Skills Bootcamp, do you need to bring any supplies on that day (other than the printouts)? I was reading the skills pdf and noticed you need to know how to measure BP. Also, I would like to get a head start on getting familiar with the skills now, before the Bootcamp, I was wondering what materials does WGU uses, I heard they use Mosby and ATI, I just want to confirm. Thank you.
  5. Congratulations to you holistic_healer, I look forward to meeting you in our first skills lab too! I got the call this morning at around 6:30 am and woke up my poor dogs and husband in excitement. I am really excited to meet and get to know everyone in the cohort and those on the wait list too, one can't have too many connections and support. :) Good luck to all those still waiting to hear back. Can't wait to get started in October.
  6. Hello centercourt2015, I believe the Indiana Cohort is not as competitive as the California Cohorts. So I would not use that as a baseline for Indiana. My stats are as follows/information are as follows: Degree: Yes - BA in Human Development and a MBA GPA: 4.0 for the sciences TEAS: 86% Healthcare Experience: I do have healthcare experience about 7 years in various departments, but not clinical experience. My job requires me to do chart reviews and audits for different co-morbidities. I will try to answer as many questions as I can.
  7. I just found out this morning as well and I got accepted!! Congratulations on being #1 on the wait list. Hopefully you will get in. I am so excited to start in Oct.
  8. For those waiting a response for the Cedar Sinai Cohort, I heard we should be hearing if we were accepted or not sometime this week. Good luck to all who applied!! Fingers Crossed.
  9. Hello upallnite, That is very true, each passing day does bring us closer to our goal. Since WGU is my only option, it makes the anticipation worse. I don't think it would be so bad if I had other options. Unfortunately, I have to work full time M-F 9-5 and there are no other schools that will allow me to work those hours and complete my BSN at the same time. Good luck to you, upallnite, I hope you hear from all the schools you applied to soon!
  10. Hello NurseDez87, Thank you for that input. I though I had to do a leave of absence for the whole 3 months, which would mean I would have to use all my vacation time. I am glad that the most important time to take of is during the 5 week preceptorship, that way I can have some vacation time to use when I study for the NCLEX. Now I am just waiting and hoping I get in the the Cedar Sinai Cohort that starts this October.
  11. July26, Don't feel discouraged, WGU looks at other criterias beyond a degree. LorenW28 stated he was accepted without a degree. Although the Pre-Licensure BSN student population is small, I am confident that others without degrees have been accepted. It is not over until they say no; even then, there are two other cohorts coming up that you can also apply to as well (if Pasadena and OC works for you). My plan is to make myself available for all 3 cohorts, to increase my chances of getting in. Good luck!! Just a couple LONG weeks before we get to know if we were accepted or not. :)
  12. Hello NurseDez87, I am too new to PM you. I was wondering if you can provide some insight to the last 3 months of the program. I know they say you can't work, but I was wondering what the last 3 months entails. Thank you.
  13. I have not heard from my enrollment counselor either. She told me it would be 30-45 days. I have been counting down the days and really hope it is 30 days. It has been a grueling few weeks for me already... We can do it, just a couple more weeks! :) Good luck to you.
  14. Hello SoonerBredExpat, I guess I shouldn't complain, since you had to wait 6 months!! I am really hoping I get in, I do not have any clinical experience and I only scored an 86 on the TEAS. Staying positive and crossing my fingers and toes. I would love to hear more about your experience during the Skills portion of the clinicals, I can only imagine how much one needs to learn in one weekend.
  15. Hello I wanted to reach out and see who else is anxiously waiting for their October 1st Cedars Sinai Cohort decision. It has only been a few weeks and the uncertainty is driving me crazy . My enrollment counselor stated it could take as early as 30-45 days to hear back from WGU. For those who have been admitted in the past, is that time frame too good to be true or does it really take up to two months to hear back from the Nursing Committee? Good luck to everyone that applied!!
