Surgical Trauma CE/educational resources?
I start my first job as a nurse practitioner soon with an Acute Care Surgical Team (covering STICU and burn patients, among others). I am also in year three of three pursuing my DNP. Any recommendations on any resources/websites (even ones that require joining organizations like AANP if I need to) that would serve double duty in getting me brushed up on this patient population while also counting as hours I could count toward my DNP? (I've worked as a bedside nurse on a STICU for four years, so the patient population is not new to me, but anything that could help speak more directly to the provider role.) Thanks for any suggestions you can lend.

UVA CNL Summer 2019
Congrats! I'm a graduate of the program (2017), and since I commuted from a little over half an hour away, I wouldn't be a great resource on local housing. However, there are a number of my former classmates as well as current students who would likely be happy to point you toward local housing options. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with any of them. Also, I highly recommend one of you set up a "UVA CNL Class of 2021" (or whatever) Facebook page right away. Usually, a few people from previous/current classes will join if you want them to, and then folks can blast out questions that everyone can see the answers to about the program, housing, etc.

If you don't mind, I'm going to cut and paste your questions onto your class' new FB page and then answer them there. That way, if the info is helpful to anyone else, including those who join the page later, it will be easier to find.

My two cents would be to make it the UVA CNL Class of 2019 page since that follows what classes the last few years have been doing, but people would figure it out either way. :) Sure, feel free to add me. I sent you a PM, so let me know if you don't get it.

Just so you know, if you search those words on FB, two classes will pop up, including ours. Just figured I'd point that out in case it helps anyone avoid confusion.

It should let you PM me, and I'm happy to answer questions. (Though I think I remember it making you post X number of posts on this site before it will let you.) Better still, assuming you've decided you're definitely accepting their offer, if you wanted to create a "UVA CNL Class of 2019" page on Facebook, I'd be happy to answer there, and then other folks who are joining your class could see that info too.

I'm pasting what I put on last year's applicants' page since my advice remains the same: PASTE BEGINS Congrats to everyone who got good news! I mentioned before, but since someone asked: I know we have at least two people in our current program who were on the wait list, so if you ended up there, don't give up hope! And to anyone who didn't get good news: I know of a handful of folks who didn't get in their first time around or who didn't get into their first choice but ended up extremely happy in another program, so try and keep that in the back of your mind. It sucks that they can't accept more folks in each class, so sometimes it's just how the cards fall. Having the stats to be considered a legitimate candidate in the first place pretty much guarantees you success soon no matter where you land. To the incoming class: I highly recommend one of you start a Facebook group. (You can make it a closed group.) It's a great way to share information and get to know each other. You'll have a TON of questions going forward, and it beats trading a thousand e-mails. We even had a few second-year students in the program volunteer to join our group who answered lots of our questions about everything from textbooks, where to live and park, what to expect, etc. Hope this makes your holidays wonderful. Glad the waiting is over for you. Get ready for a crazy ride!

So exciting! I had heard that acceptances might not go out until a couple weeks from now, so that's great news you all are finding out now!

Adding on to the question about cost: One really nice thing that is available that has helped some folks out quite a bit are the Conway scholarships. For my class, I think there were just a few people who got them (not really sure how many out of the 32 total in the class), but the program expanded how many scholarships were available for the first-year class this year, and then they just announced that there will be even more scholarships available going forward for the next few years. I don't know tons of details about the criteria they use to select the recipients (I wasn't fortunate enough to receive one), but it's a wonderful opportunity for those who get one. $5 Million Gift Will Relieve Financial Burdens on Career-Changers Entering Nursing | UVA Today

Don't forget the guys who have interviews too. As far as commuting, it's doable, but would be pretty tough from two hours away, especially in the summer. (I graduate this semester and have commuted the whole time. My drive plus walk from where I park is about an hour each way.) In the fall and spring, classes are only on Thursdays and Fridays, but you'll also have clinicals one or two days a week (and sometimes even three days a week, but mostly just during your final semester of the program). Some people are able to secure clinical sites that are close to where they live back home, but that's not always guaranteed. During the summer, classes are usually five days a week for a while, so that commute would probably be pretty rough. As for costs: Have you seen this page? https://www.nursing.virginia.edu/media/Tuition_Fees_MSN-2016-17.pdf Make sure to factor in summer tuition too. (It kind of gets lost in that sheet if you're not looking for it.) Hope that helps.

Sorry, wish I knew some numbers of how many interviews were extended compared to how many acceptances went out, but I don't know. Best of luck to all!
