Would you mind sharing more of your experience at Landstuhl? Not just the work experience, but the culture, what it was like living in Germany, etc. do most people who work there just do short contracts, or do some people stay on indefinitely? Are you eligible to apply for EU citizenship after working there a certain period of time, or are you disqualified since you are still working for the US Army?

Thanks for your comment -- after doing a bit more poking around on the Oregon Board of Nursing website (the state I plan to move to), it looks like I just have to be registered as an nurse there first (which I can do prior to moving there), and from there, once I'm licensed as an NP here in Virginia, the process is similar (but perhaps more involved) as applying for RN licensure by endorsement.

I graduate NP school in August, and am planning to move soon after I graduate. I've learned (thanks to this forum!) that you can be licensed as an RN in multiple states, but I'm wondering if the same applies for an NP license? Do I need to first be licensed as an NP in the state I currently live and then apply for licensure by endorsement in the state I hope to move to, or is it possible to bypass that extra piece of bureaucracy since I'll be just then taking the exam? I'm an American nurse in a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) program, and I'll graduate in a year. My husband is Canadian, and we're interested in possibly moving back to Canada one day. However, right now to the best of my understanding Canada does not have any PMHNPs, only family NPs and a few other kinds. Does anyone know if Canada may be moving towards recognizing PMHNPs in the near future? Or would this be a province-by-province thing? He is from Ontario so that is where we would be moving. Thanks for any and all insight into the subject.

I'll be finishing my Master's as a Psych NP in about a year and a half, and we are planning to move to California afterwards. I am open to staying here (in Virginia) for a year or two to get some experience first, but I would like to at least see if there are any job possibilities in California as a new grad PMHNP. Does anyone know if I would have to take my boards in CA to have license to practice as a PMHNP out there, or if I should take them here, in VA, and then apply for a PMHNP license out there once I pass my boards? Just curious how it works as an NP to apply for a job in a state where you don't currently live -- do you have to first be licensed in that state before you are eligible to apply? I have posted a few times here before, and I am interested if anyone has any experience immigrating to Canada with family sponsorship? My husband is Canadian (as is our daughter) so I am going to go that route, since I've been told it's much easier than the skilled worker route. My question is, what order should I do my applications in? Should I begin our immigration process while still in the US, and once that is moving along pursue the NNAS/CNO registration (will be moving to Ontario)? Do you have to already have status before transferring your license? Other background info: I am Bachelor's prepared and took the NCLEX in 2013. Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has immigrated from the US to Canada via family sponsorship. Thanks!

I'm wondering this too! In the US psych NPs are in great demand and make high salaries, which I would definitely do if we stayed in the US, but my husband is canadian and we are going to move north. I am trying to figure out what advanced psych nursing options there are too!

I would like to piggyback on this thread -- I am an American RN moving to Canada in the next few years (my husband is Canadian) and all of my experience (3 years) has been in psychiatric nursing. Here in the states, you can get certified in your specialty after a certain amount of experience and hours (which I'm not yet eligible for as I am part-time), but an RN is an RN, there are not specialized Psychiatric RNs as it seems there are in Canada. As such, would I be eligible for a psych RN job in Canada, or do you have to be a specialized Psych RN to be hired for a Psych nursing job in Canada? Thank you!

I was just asking because I'm interested in becoming a nurse educator but I haven't seen anyCanadian graduate nursing programs offering this specialty, I have basically only seen NP programs, and then a few PhD programs for research. It may be a few years before we move to Canada in which case I could finish my Masters, but I'm just trying to figure out if having a masters in nursing education from an American university would make me eligible for comparable jobs in canada as the us.

I am an RN with 3 years experience in psychiatric nursing, which I love. I live in the US but am married to a Canadian and we are moving to the Kitchener/Guelph area in the next year or two. I love psychiatric nursing but am not committed to staying in this specialty, and given that we are going to be moving to Canada I would like to try to gain some experience here so I can maximize my chances of finding work when (or ideally before!) we move there. I am considering a Master's of Nursing in Education (which I just made a separate post about) but am not sure if that will be recognized in Canada or what that might lead to. I am really open to any field of nursing. Just looking for what is most in-demand in Ontario. Thank you!

I will be moving to Ontario (probably the Kitchener/Guelph area) in the next couple years to be closer to my husband's family. I am currently in the US. I am considering getting my Master's in Nursing Education at an American university. Does anyone know whether with a Master's in Nursing Education from a US university I would be eligible to teach in Canada? Does Canada have many online nursing programs? I have done some research on this online but have not found much information, and I have not found any Canadian-based universities that offer MSN Education programs. I would really appreciate any advice from a Canadian RN who knows anything on this topic. Thank you!

I have started applying to the NNAS and the CNO. Do you know if it is possible to get a job offer from outside Canada? I had assumed I would have to live there first and begin my immigration process, but if it will be possible to do my license transfer from outside Canada and have a job lined up, that would make life so much easier!
