I always tell my students: never assume that because someone has a nursing license that they know their butt from a hole in the ground. Report all unsafe nurses pronto! Your kids are counting on you to be their advocate!

NEVER NEVER NEVER sign the narc count if you really didn't count it. What you are documenting is that you actually counted the drugs and that they are all accounted for. As the oncoming nurse you should actually count the drugs and inspect the packages for intactness or evidence of tampering. Good luck with this person. Hold your ground and be tough!

I don't let them go for "smoke breaks." Our school has a policy that they are not allowed to smoke in their uniform.

Give clear instructions. I once handed a package of chux to a student and said "put these on the patients bed" and she did - the whole wrapped package neatly centered at the foot of the bed.
