  1. Hi! For those of you who have been through the Critical Care Internship at Methodist (Dallas), can you give me some insight +/- advice? I have accepted the position for Feb '17 and I am very excited but of course I am also pretty nervous. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I really want to succeed. Thanks!
  2. Hi txnurse17! I received an offer from Methodist Dallas for the CC internship today actually. If you haven't already, you should hear something soon!
  3. Hi future RNs! Here are some of the ancillary books we use that have been SO helpful. The first is the workbook that goes with the fundamentals text. The others are NCLEX review and HESI review. There's a fundamentals of success that has been a life saver and the demystified book really breaks the hard things down. I use all of those books to study by doing the questions in the coordinating chapters. I've made pretty good grades on my tests:). Also, I put a pic of the link to the scrub pants I got. Same exact color as the tops and without the annoying elastic all the way around (that's how the bookstore ones are) but still shapely. These books are NOT required. But recommended :) Hope these help!
  4. [TABLE] [TR] [TD]This is copied and pasted from a spreadsheet that one of our most diligent and super organized students made. These are the books they told us to buy. You can see price comparisons between the versions, where the prices were compared from...... The only things on this list that we didnt use was the health assessment online access code (wait on buying that one).. but you will def want the fundamentals, the mosbys diagnostic and lab, the ulrich care planning.. and youll need med surg eventually. 5. The only scheduled thing you may have on the weekend (saturday) is a clinical. No classes or anything..... first semester. In the next semester, we may be in clinical friday, saturday OR sunday. BUT you will have to do 15 hours of what they call 'service learning' which is basically volunteer work in the community broadly related to nursing/medicine. You will likely be doing that some weekends.... also, start looking into the opportunities for that now:) There is a small presentation you have to do for it!
  6. I was once a rigid planner......and then I got into this program. It took me a few months to adjust, literally! Throw it out the window....I didn't believe people when they told me this- but it's true! You're going to have a MUCH easier time if you just gooooo with the flow- there are going to be so many wrenches thrown in your plans you won't know which way is up! It's crazy...but it is what it is! For OUR first semester, we were either at Dallas Medical Center, Methodist (Dallas- in Oak Cliff area), Baylor or Medical City Plano. A LOT of people went to MCP. But, you won't know where they toss you until right before your classes start. :)
  7. Let me see if I can find my list of what we bought. I will tell you that they're going to say you need new editions- half of us did not get new editions but instead one year behind. It's been just fine... And we saved a LOT of money... but it's up to you to make that call! Whatever you do, make sure to check chegg, amazon, Barnes and noble and any other online bookstore and compare prices. The college bookstore is kiiiiiiiind of a rip off! You're gonna be buying a lot of stuff. Make sure you pinch pennies where you can! There are lots of things they forget to tell you to buy until later...and they seem to be the most helpful! Don't open any access codes you buy until you make positive that you actually need them. Make sure things can be returned.... (This is why I love Amazon!) I'll try to make a list of those things as soon as I can and let you know so you can get a head start. You will want a cardiac stethoscope. A lot of people got littman lites. The thicker the tube, the better. Invest the money in a good scope- you'll use it a LOT and it will last forever if you take care of it! Get a pen light, get bandage scissors. Get comfortable WHITE (yes, white and non-porous (no mesh, holes) shoes. I love my nursemates. You can't get clogs, don't even ask. No crocs either! Order scrubs early because they get back ordered. It's the easiest to get the tops at the bookstore because they'll embroider your name... The pants you can get there or I can send a link to the ones we got on Amazon that are a different style- but exact color. Try to match your greens exactly- or as close as possible! Lots of girls in my class bought the male version at the bookstore too- more pockets. I got a BP cuff on Amazon for $10- I was glad to have it to practice at home before the BP check off. But, they have plenty you can use at school.... Last bit of advice- if you can swing it, get an Amazon prime account- if you have a .edu email, you can get the student prime for much cheaper. I can't tell you how many times I found out I needed something and then bought it and had it two days later in time to use to study for the test. Lol!
  8. Hey y'all! First semester student here- our schedule for this semester was/is: First 6 weeks, we were in preclinical either Monday 8-5 OR Tuesday 8-5. Wednesdays open lab (optional but you'll want it) 10-2, Tutoring 1-3 (most of the time- also optional). Thursday is skills from 8-12 OR 1-5. Friday is lecture 9-2. After the first 6 weeks, preclinical ends and you start REAL clinicals! Our group goes to either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (if you go Weds, you'll have open lab/tutoring Tuesdays) or Saturday clinicals. Two VERY important things to know about this program: 1. They will tell YOU your schedule. Always. And probably last minute. 2. EVERYTHING is always subject to change. It WILL change (constantly) and there is NOTHING you can do about it. If you're willing to go with the flow and prepare for serious flexibility, you'll be ok! Lots of moms/dads here. Lots of them are single. If you want it, you will find a way to do it. Good luck!
  9. Hi there! I just added you! Scroll thru the page- there are so many answers to lots of questions! Feel free to post questions there too! Success camp is all day Tuesday and Wednesday, August 25 and 26.
  10. I may be interested! However, Nancy has been pretty adamant about having the correct editions so, once she sends us our list, I'll reach out and compare with you!
  11. Hey yall!! If anyone here plans on taking Microbiology Online at DCCCD or UTA for the nursing prereqs, or to get micro out of the way before your program starts, or to get more points towards your nursing application, I have a microscope and brand new labpaq that I am willing to sell to you for less than what just the labpaq costs!! Let me know if you or anyone you know could benefit from this!! :)
  12. This is so fantastic! I plan to study Pharmacology over the summer before I begin my nursing program. Thank you so much for aiding in setting us new nursing students up for success!
  13. Heres the link, yall! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1087021441312929/ Make sure you 'ask to join' so that you can still see everything once I close the group :)
  14. Ok, the group is public now so yall can find it and ask to join: Brookhaven Nursing Fall 2015 Class (welcoming suggestions for title! lol) Come and find it!! Once we are all in, I will close the group!
  15. Exactly what I thought. I will work on it now :)
  16. I was thinking about making a closed FB group for us fall 2015 students... would anyone be interested in that? I know past classes have done it and I think it's a great, more convenient way to keep in touch... thoughts?
  17. Nancy just emailed me back :)
  18. Check your emails!!! Im in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. I took it online in a regular semester.. it is definitely a lot of info, but, if you buckle down I bet you could do it. I took it with D. Smith/J. Becker and they were pretty helpful.
  20. Unfortunately, my boyfriend doesnt get grossed out by it.. but I LOVE to gross my friends out
  21. Welcome to my life! LOL! Isn't it so fascinating?!
  22. Soon you'll be a Dallasite! Well, an almost Dallasite.. But closer!
  23. So, if any of yall are into kinda weird, gross medical (trauma) things... Like I am... There's this app called figure 1 that I'm borderline obsessed with. They are some of the most graphic pics.. And some not so graphic.. But they are submitted by healthcare workers, with either a history of the case or asking questions about the case. It's pretty informative and I have learned a lot from it. It also helps me with my medical terminology and when I was in AP a lot of what I learned translated to what I saw on figure 1! I find it totally fascinating! Check it out... Unless you're faint of heart 😁 just another way to pass the time til Friday.....
  24. My name is Erica☺️
  25. That's so fun yall know each other! Good luck to you too on your test!
