I think you have to apply for the parking pass online. I found the people at the transportation office to be very helpful when I called. The permits are kind of expensive (plan to spend a couple hundred bucks a year) and some are more expensive than others. Anyone who is taking the Metrorail to campus has to apply for your special discount monthly pass in person (50 bucks a month unlimited). You can take a shuttle from the Metrorail if you're commuting. I'll be riding my bike to campus though. If you register your bike with campus police, they give you a free U-lock! I actually cannot believe the textbook list prices. I paid maybe $120-200 a semester for books and supplies every semester in ugrad. Clearly, we should all write textbooks after we graduate.

Hey everyone! I've decided to withdraw my admissions offer from the nursing school. I've really loved my time at FAU but I think it's time for me to head somewhere new. I want to wish all of you the best of luck. I've really enjoyed participating in this thread. It really made the process a little less stressful. You guys are wonderful and I know you're going to be amazing nurses!

I'm not even looking at Blackboard until I'm done with finals. The stress and lack of sleep is really crazy right now. Be prepared to be frustrated, because we're not going to hear final decisions about scholarships until later in December (right around Christmas) and in early January for others. Hang in there everyone.

Yes, we must be CPR certified before you start clinicals. UM only accepts the AHA BLS for Healthcare providers course. Try to find one that offers a student discount if you can.

Debblasko, you may have to wait a bit for scholarship. Since we are only offered preliminary admission, I don't believe we qualify for scholarships and financial aid through FAU yet.

I'm going to be at the noon CPR class. It's good to finally get that requirement out if the way.

Hi Debb, I only put in information through NursingCAS so as long as that information was sent, you're fine. UM changed their admission process and this is the first year they are using NursingCAS so there may have been some confusion.

I have a tiny heart attack everytime I hear the little notification on my phone that I have a new email. PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY!!!

This is the first year that FAU is doing a January start date and there were some behind-the-scenes administration changes. They definitely have to iron out some kinks but we are the lab mice in this experiment. I think they send that email because people forget that they have to fill out two applications for the school (though I really wish FAU would stop that because its super redundant and a waste of money).

I know! Classes start Jan 5th! That doesn't give us alot of time to prepare.

I definitely think they interviewed more than 80 people but they keep a pretty firm cap on admitting 40 for the ABSN and 40 for the Traditional track. It could be a good sign that they wanted to see more candidates in person rather than making cuts based on our stats.

Hey there! Congratulations! The Res Life site is honestly a great place to start to get a feel for the neighborhoods and the price points. Brickell, Coral Gables and Coconut Grove are popular neighborhoods because they are close to the school but you're going to be competing with lots of other people who want to live there. If you're more budget conscious, try Kendall or Dadeland. Anything north or further west takes you to a lot of affordable options. The basic rule of Florida real estate is to stay away from the water and the "in-demand" neighborhoods where you can pay a premium. If you're looking to put down roots in FL, a realtor can be a great asset. Good luck! P.S. I'm a lifelong Floridian and I lived in Miami for years.

Your story took me back to the time that I decided to withdraw. I was only taking my nursing pre-requisites but I could feel myself checking out of school. I finally left for 8 months so I could really have to to think about my future. I can back in the spring refreshed and ready to learn. I've just been accepted into my top nursing programs (whoo!) but I'll confess, your post got me a little worried about my program that's starting in January. Is it really worth it to read and study ahead?

I thought it was kind of a strange interview format. I loved the little bit at the end when they basically said: "Don't call us, we'll call you". I totally forgot how we were going to be notified of their admission decision. Was it email?

They have (tentatively) scheduled the mandatory orientation for Nov. 15 (this could move to the week after) so we wait until mid-November.

UM always strongly suggests that we use a Windows laptop due to the use of the Elsevier HESI software that every nursing student is required to use. If you love everything Apple though you can always use Boot Camp, VMware Fusion, Parallels, or Virtualbox so you can run Windows through your Mac laptop. I would also make sure you have 8 gigs of RAM at least and the latest processor (at least i5). I would wait a little longer before purchasing a new laptop, better deals are coming closer towards the end of the year. Check out the student handbook for specific computer requirements.
