Got burned????
Just interested in some of your wisdom/feedback. I'm going to make this short as I can, if you need more info, just ask. I am a new OB nurse, still in orientation (one month). I am on night shift right now, and last night was my third time taking an assignment on my own. I had two patients, only one was less than 24 hours out so she was the only one who needed an assessment q4. Three am, went to do my assessment. I felt like the patient didn't want me there at all, which was no different from earlier in the evening. I was polite, asked if she needed anything, did my assessment and nursing care (which I feel good about). Left the room, told the CNA that I felt like the patient didn't "click" with me and was uncomfortable with me, and that she (the CNA) is really good at making people feel at ease so while ordinarily at three am I would do vitals as well, could she get them? (which IS in her job description). She was really sweet to me, ya no problem, etc. and then when I went back in the nursery later, my Orientator asked me what happened with the CNA because she came in the nursery cursing me out etc. and calling me lazy etc. I explained my side but it still seemed that after that, my orientator had a different attitude towards me. All I was trying to do was make my pt. more comfortable and do what I needed to do to make sure she and baby were stable and safe. Thoughts?

How about a thread for baby names you liked?
I really like Hannah, Grace, Hallie, and Ava for girls. For boys I like Ashton, Sterling, and Harrison (long I know but there is just something about them that I like). Oh, and my new niece is Lillian Rose, which I like alot better than what they were going to name a boy; Wooder Lincoln aaaaaahhhhhh. Well, Lincoln is a family name but still. Oh, and my husbands name is Aavram, which I absolutely love.

Do I need to start in a hospital as a new RN?
Yes, I took the job and I am now going on my 6th week. I love it. I love the people I work with, the MD's, the hours, and the experience. I am getting TONS of experience: IV's, PACU, Conscious sedation, etc. I was worried before about my decision but I know now that I made the right one. It is a dream job and I am very glad that I didn't pass it up.

well, now I'm really scared....
Thank you all for your replies, I start on Monday and can't wait!

how early did you start practicing NCLEX questions?
As you pointed out, it can be hard to understand at first......I started using the review books (saunders mostly) during my second year when it was more relevant. I would usually just read all the chapters in my Nsg. books and then read saunders and do questions like a review. I think it helped, I passed on my first try with 75 questions. Oh, after I graduated, I read saunders over again before doing anything else. Hope that helps. Good luck and hang in there! :)

well, now I'm really scared....
After reading all of the other recent posts, I am questioning my decision not to go to med surg or even a hospital as a new RN. I accepted a position in an endoscopy center, 40 hours a week, no weekends, holidays or nights. Although I do want to eventually be doing something totally different (L&D), I fell in love with the staff, fast-pace, and opportunity to get ACLS cert. when I shawdowed. Anyone have any thoughts?

Do I need to start in a hospital as a new RN?
well, I got a job offer (as a new grad RN) and am seriously considering calling tomorrow and taking it! It is in an endoscopy center, four 10 hour shifts per week, good pay, no weekends or holidays. I shadowed for a day and was offered a job that afternoon. There are only five nurses and they all seem very close. Most of the people that work there do so for years (I asked). The girl I would "replace" left to pursue her dream of public health nursing after five years. I would definately be proficient in IV's :) but eventually I know I want to be in L&D. If I took this job, later on, would it still be possible to get there if I do this? ANY thoughts would help right now!

Interview for Peds - any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
well, one part of my dream has come true. I have an interview scheduled for a peds nurse position as a new grad RN and basically have one fear. The question "why do you want to be a pediatric nurse?" How do you tell someone that it is your dream, and has been since you can remember (literally, from the age of five, I would go to houses of new mothers and watch, in awe, and learn). I was explaining to my aunt about trisomy 21 when I was 12. I had thousands of dollars in my room from babysitting. I would come home from school to watch "A Baby Story" even if I had already seen it twice. I understand and have seen from my 72 hour pediatric preceptor rotation while still in Nsg school that there are many challenges in this area and that it is not all a bed of roses. I know that, but I still want it with all my heart and I feel that I am still more comfortable taking care of children than adults. Please help, I have thought too much about it maybe? I dont know. ANY ADVICE????

New Graduate Internships????
I would go to google and type in the city and then "hospital" and look at some of the hospital web sites. I had never heard of an internship (i just graduated in NC in June) until I moved to Alaska last month. there are four hospitals in my area and only one that offers internships. I am waiting to see if I got one. I found it by simply looking at the different hospitals online and then clicking on "Careers" and there was the info. Good luck to you. P.S. I don't know what type of nurse you would like to be, but I always wanted to work in Cook's Children's hospital outside of Dallas (Ft. Worth). Check it out.

should I call?? New RN waiting on call-backs
I have recently moved from NC to AK, passed the NCLEX and am now in the job hunt. I have applied at three hospitals, two online on the 20th and one (my first choice) in person with a Human Resources person last friday. Well, now I am wondering because when I met with the lady from my first pick, she said she would call me on Monday. It is now Thursday afternoon here, and no call. As for the other hospitals, it has been eight days and nothing. Should I call? How long does this usually take? Help!
