  1. Thank-you for the info., LaLaine1025
  2. Thank-you all for your answers. That is really appalling! I thought it was much higher.
  3. I was an LVN for many years. I let my license lapse about 20 years ago. I am looking at taking a refresher course online, which includes hospital experience during the second half of the training. I am in my late 60's and in relative health, but I cannot do heavy work anymore. I used to work in pediatric in home care and enjoyed that a lot. Does anyone have any thoughts about the refresher course, being an LVN again at my age and what is the current pay for LVN's doing in home care in California? In addition, I might mention I was a caregiver to a family member who had very complex needs, for several years, so I am used to interfacing with many different agencies and disciplines. Thanks for any feedback.
  4. I am 65 years old with an expired LVN license. The past few years of my work was with medically fragile children in their homes. Now, I am considering retaking my boards, taking some refresher courses, then going on to get my RN. I think I would like to work in a level two nursery, but am not sure if I could handle it. I don't want a position that is very stressful, but I cannot lift patients, etc. either. Any input would be very appreciated. I have been researching schools and have an appointment with a local community college today. In addition, at this time, I have a husband who had a lung transplant some years back and I am basically his medical manager. Keeping him out of the hospital as much as possible, is one of my major goals, but it does take time. None the less, I am looking to the future, as honestly, I do not see him making it beyond a few years and I don't want to wait until then to start. Does it sound like I am nuts to even think about doing this?
  5. I am wondering about the Angels in Waiting. I am probably going against the grain here, but I am interested in how much LVN's and RN's are paid in California. Most of us have to make an income, and don't feel like we can take on the role of foster parent and work too, particularly if we are older. I don't mean that the money should be our motivating factor. I have thought about being a foster parent for years, and it isn't because of the money. I have taken care of medically fragile children in their homes. Now I am wondering about the Angels in Waiting program. Does anyone know if it is only in Southern CA. that the program exists?
  6. I have been asking about refresher courses, but the schools I have spoken with want me to go through the entire program. Does anyone know of refresher courses that are offered for LVN's in California? Especially in the Central Valley (Sacramento to Visalia, ideally)? I want to thank everyone for the encouraging words and suggestions about how to explain my absence. I never thought I would use my license again, so to anyone who has ever considered letting their's lapse, my advice is, don't! :)
  7. I let my LVN license expire about fifteen years ago. I found out I can apply to take them again and not have to do it all over again. I am fairly confidant I can pass it, as I looked at a reference book and am doing well with the sample questions. However, if anyone has another way for me to improve my chances of success, I'd really appreciate hearing it. :) I have no recent experience, although I am not stagnant. My daughter is a BSN and we talk all the time. I have taken care of my husband for over five years, who has had very serious health issues, been on oxygen, has a gastric tube that I take care of and also I set up his feedings. I change the IV bags of normal saline when they run out, discontinue them, do dressing changes, as well as pour his meds, etc., etc. But I wonder if anyone would hire me? Any ideas?
