  1. I did 2 EMR conversion assignments. One was for Epic and one was for Cerner. With Epic I took the classes with the staff and was there through go live and extended beyond that. I had no prior Epic experience and they still hired me because they wanted nurse patient ratios to be low so staff could concentrate on learning the new system. With Cerner I was thrown in with no training and just taught myself. Not quite as easy but I did it. Both were pretty good assignments. I'd do it again. And yes, Epic looks really good on your resume!
  2. The hospital I am at is small (like 4 total nurses for night shift small, not including me) and there isn't anyone who has kids my daughters age. They have babies or teens and my daughter is 6. I think part of the problem is where we are. I'm hoping it will be easier on our next assignment.
  3. I'm from Pinehurst! :) My husband is not a nurse and stays home with our daughter. You could also save money by traveling local for a while. Not as fun though...

^^^Agree with what the others said. I was fortunate to have my husband with me so I wasn't alone but we trekked 1500 miles from small town NC to south TX. I LOVED driving and seeing all of the new places on the way...we even detoured a couple of times just to see things like New Orleans. But yeah, there were times (like Atlanta and Houston) where I was white knuckling down the highway. :) Even with the two of us we debated very seriously about taking our friend who is a car mechanic and flying him home when we got there. Good luck!
  5. I'm from NC too! I'm with Trinity and love them. I also liked TNAA bit they paid less. I travel with my husband and daughter and I love having my family with me. It def makes it not as lonely. I kind of can't imagine doing it by myself. Where are you in NC?
  6. It's good to know there are people in my same boat at least. It would be easier if there were mom playgroups here but there aren't.
  7. Hi all, I have constant questions. I hope I'm not posting too much. Anyway, I'm traveling with my husband and 6 year old daughter. My daughter has overall adjusted well and has started homeschool but I'm having issues finding friends for her. I don't really know how to get her involved with extra curricular activities being that we will be moving every few months. It seems kind of pointless. I have thought about dance, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, etc....but how when we aren't staying here? I take her to the library and she went to summer camp at the children's museum, but no lasting friendships came out of it... I just feel guilty at this point...like I uprooted her life. She's usually a social butterfly. I think part of it is where we are living...DEEP south TX. There are not any moms groups here and no other travelers at my facility. The staff nurses don't have kids her age. We met a couple downstairs in our apartment but they have boys and at this stage in her life she relates better to girls. I guess I am just looking for suggestions and maybe some support that what I'm doing is okay and isn't going to ruin her.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my previous posts... I've lived in NC my entire life up until now in the same town. I do have a physician at home in NC and all of our family is there. This was our permanent home. My house was a house that I rented (not owned), but it was our permanent address (not a vacation home). My in-laws are keeping a fair amount of our furniture at their house. If I lost my contract today, their house is where we'd go home to. I'm sure we will go home periodically...although for 2014 is it necessary since we lived in NC for 6 months out of this year? I don't think it's feasible for me to keep a PRN job there. If I have a signed lease contract and I pay my in-laws monthly for a room in their home, is that a tax home? I did go to Travel Tax and read a lot. I think I'm prob going to use them for my taxes this year.

I lived in our rental home in NC from Jan-June this year when I was staff.

If I go back to NC I would be. If we go home for a few days between assignments its where we'd stay. Is that what you mean?

Okay, I have tax home questions. I'm pretty confused about this. I'm hoping for Ned to help me out! Do I qualify as having a tax home: -I worked in NC until June 2014 (which is when I left to travel) -I have my car insurance, license, insurance, vehicle tags, voter registration, and a PO Box in NC -Prior to leaving I had a rental home, which I gave up when I left. We have a storage unit in NC. - I pay $200/month to "rent a room" at my in-laws home. So, if I worked and lived in NC in 2014, do I even need to be paying rent to my in-laws for the rest of this year? Is having lived there till then sufficient to establish my tax home without any further measures? TIA!
  13. Oddly, the hospital I am at turned to Tenet just this week. :-(
  14. I'm starting to get toward the end of my contract and I'm weighing my options as far as extending or potentially submitting to jobs in CO and UT. I've noticed that many of the hospitals in the areas that I want to go to are HCA/Parallon. I know their reputation isn't good, but I don't know why. I'd like some feedback...positive or negative, whatever you may know. Has anyone worked around the Denver area? The hospital I'm currently contracted with in TX has been a great experience and they want me to extend. I don't want to give up a decent job for one that I'm going to regret going to. TIA! Also considering the Baltimore, MD area FWIW.
  15. I'm with Trinity and I LOVE them. I'm fairly new to traveling and I'm currently on my first assignment. I know quite a few other travelers that have used Trinity and they are very satisfied. No crazy religious stuff...I haven't heard anything about that actually.
