What does your state require you to do?
In Florida for an RN we need 24 credit hours every four years. In NY and SC none are required. It is good in that it makes you look at what is happening and stay on top of issues.

BSN minimum requirement
I am a 2 year RN and proud of it. I have worked for 28 years in nursing and still see the BSN as overly glorified. BSN's don't know what a real nurse does nor do they want to know. Willing to dish out orders but not know how to do the task yourselves. I am working on my bachelor degree but never in nursing. I watched a BSN steri strip a laceration recently, she went parralel to the laceration instead of closing it! Educated, guess that is a matter of opinion. The nursing shortage will always be here, sometimes worse than others. Good luck.

two year RN degree programs
I graduated from a 2 year RN program after being an LPN for 15 years and don't regret one second of it. In my experience 4 year RN programs produce useless RN's in terms of "working" experience. They are put in charge and don't have a clue because they never have worked. I am finally going after my bachelor degree but have been in an administrative role for the past 15 years. Don't be discouraged, you will make a great RN! ------------------

Florida nurses
I have been in SW Florida for six months now. From NY then to SC and now here for the duration. I am DON in a nursing home and am not at all pleased with the system here. I have resigned and will be working at the hospital as a Case Manager. I hope this is more to my liking. Again, the nursing shortage is everywhere, the pay is lower and the seasonal employment is a concern. The survey process for nursing homes is totally out of control and I do not recommend that area here. I hate to sound so pessamistic but this has been my experience. My hope is that the hospital setting will be better. Good luck.

Thinking of taking a DON offer
I am currently the Director of Nursing for a 120 bed facility in Florida. I have been in same position in South Carolina prior to moving here. I am now getting out of this position and never intend to go there again. I am taking a pay cut to do something different. Everything the others have said is true except it gets worse! Not only can you end up fired for a bad survey, in Florida they threaten your license. It is considered "neglect" if the survey team find fault that they consider to be harmful or jeopardy as the regulations state. No room for human error, no trend, only one mistake from a human being and bang, your license is in limbo!! I have been in geriatrics for 30 years now, most of it in NY, and am leaving it. I wish you well but would stay in a position where I was happy and "safe". Good luck to you. Carol ------------------
