This is the oddest list....I wonder where the data that "reflect the latest labour market needs"[COLOR=#333333] is gathered from? I am also confused as to whether this means immigrants in those professions will be guaranteed a position once they immigrate or if they will end up in a different occupation, such as a foreign-trained RN working as a care aide. It seems that a better solution to this apparent shortage would be to open up more seats in Universities and Colleges. Perhaps I am ignorant but I feel that as Nurses we are at least safeguarded by our union - hospitals can't pay foreign-trained RNs a lesser wage for the same position. It is definitely an interesting time to be starting a career!

Hey future UBC peeps! Just an FYI - you can be offered a seat up until first day of classes. Last year one of my classmates was offered a seat the day before classes started so she made an impromptu move to Vancouver. Don't give up hope if you are still wait listed after June 15th (or whatever the deposit deadline is this year) Enjoy the rest of your summer! (seriously - enjoy it, bask in it, read for fun, hang out with friends, whatever floats your boat because come september, it's going to get a little hectic)

I am confused about this - "The RN must utilize the nursing process to ensure the provision of quality patient care. Providing a therapeutic environment through safe, accurate and timely medication and IV administration and taking responsibility for the nursing components of the patient/family/significant other educational process are requirements for this position. Communication to and evaluation of understanding of team members, patients, and their families is another important skill" It comes off as though you are informing the Hiring Manager what skills they should look for when hiring. I would either personalize this (for example, state that you utilize the nursing process) or remove it. At worst it comes off as insulting and at best superfluous. I agree that the second paragraph needs to be more concise. For instance, you mention you had your preceptorship on the floor but this is redundant as it is included in your CV. Use this opportunity to expand further such as the skills you gained perceptoring on the unit. Also perhaps remove the word "believe." I would change it to something like, "based on my experience and qualifications I would make an excellent to your team." Sell yourself! When I write cover letters, I generally use the first paragraph to introduce myself, why I am interested and a broad overview of my skill set. The second/third paragraphs I use specific examples (generally based on the job posting and what the hiring team has requested). Cover letters can be such a pain and after 10 years I continue to feel I can improve my writing. Good luck!

If you are passionate about nursing and have known for 5 years that's the career you want you should follow that. As Fiona59 stated above no degree will guarantee you a job post-graduation. For instance, I had a friend graduate from Law School and has been unable to find an articling position for the last 2 years. On the other hand, I had 2 friends graduate from teaching and both found jobs. If you are willing to move remote or work as a casual and take any shifts offered you'll have more luck. With that said, the healthcare system needs nurses to function but the working conditions the system will subject nurses to are becoming quite unsafe, with poor staffing ratios and patient overflow (just a couple months ago a group of ER RNs quit at Royal Columbian due to terrible conditions). As ltothew said a willingness to take speciality courses (which unfortunately would come out of your own pocket) is a good way to show your dedication to Health Authorities and put you ahead of other freshly out of school nurses. Previous to entering nursing school I was very set on staying in the city but now I am seriously considering moving somewhere remote where I would likely get more hours, though no guarantee as budget cuts are everywhere. If you have previous college/university credits you might want to consider a compressed program as then you'd only be living off loans for a couple years versus 4 years. Good luck!

The NCLEX officially replaces the CRNE in January 2015 (Except in Quebec as it sounds like they are not adopting the NCLEX. Not 100% sure though). This link has a lot of great information about the NCLEX: NCLEX-RN Exam News - CNO My nursing school seems quite disorganized in regards to prepping us for the conversion. I feel my class is at a slight disadvantage as we are the school's first class writing the NCLEX. In September we had to purchase "PrepU" that is essentially a bank full of NCLEX questions but without Canadian approval/content (Canadian nurses are currently reviewing all NCLEX questions and changing any terminology as necessary). So some of the questions use drugs and protocols that aren't relevant to Canada but it's a start! To get extra practice I also signed up for an NCLEX question a day in which I am emailed a sample NCLEX question. I imagine by September there will be a lot more information for Nursing Schools to prep their students for the exam. I wouldn't worry about it too much though. My plan is to take a NCLEX prep course next spring as I write the exam in June 2015.

UBC had a very high number of applicants this year - over 500! How you wrote your application is just as important as what you wrote. I graded supplementary applications for another discipline at UBC a couple of years ago and quality makes a huge difference. The interview process is MMI. This document briefly explains it http://www.nursing.ubc.ca/PDFs/Using_multiple_mini-interviews.pdf It's pretty hard to prepare for the interview. I'd recommend looking over the CRNBC ethics document but otherwise get a good sleep and try not to stress as each station has a time limit. Good luck! It's a fun process :)
