How old is too old to become a new RN?
Go for it. I'm starting a med-surg position as a new grad at age 60 next week. I worked 12 hour shifts as a nurse extern on that unit last summer, and I handled it well. I had the experience to learn how to manage my energy, taking breaks to sit when possible and making sure to stay hydrated. I was often in better shape than some of the youngest students or nurses by the end of my extern and clinical shifts. I take good care of myself on my days off. Will I be able to do this under 70? I don't know, but I'm going to enjoy the time I have. The life experience I have has served me well so far.

UMSON Spring 2015
I am about to start at UMSON. I would like to pass on some advice as we just went through orientation and have spent the summer preparing. Most definitely get the A&P flash cards and power points out. It was specifically suggested at orientation that we review cardiac structure and functioning, as well as some of the other systems that relate to homeostasis. Also, review conversion factors you used in chemistry. Part of orientation covered conversion of doses based on prescribed dose versus available dosage. It's simple stuff, but I plan to work on more of that this week. It's the same deal as chem where you converted moles to grams, etc. They set up several opportunities for us to take CPR at school, so I wouldn't sweat that too much. You will be busy getting vaccines and drug test after admission, as well as buying uniforms, books and supplies. My best advice is to stockpile some cash for those, research scholarship and loan options, and review A&P and conversions. Relax and enjoy free time. I absolutely love UM at Shady Grove already. The orientation, faculty and staff were all impressive. My class is very excited to get started. I wish you all luck!

UMSON Fall 2014
Lol. Not sure how to feel about the warning about the new curriculum, but we might as well be prepared for the worst and be pleasantly surprised when it isn't as bad as we were told. At least that's what I'm thinking. I was hoping to get one of the tough ones done in the first semester. I would guess this means a five day school week that semester.

UMSON Fall 2014
No, but I just got an email from Shady Grove from Katharine Dever. It's a nice email with a link about scholarships. She said she will be calling everyone soon.

UMSON Fall 2014
Some questions for those who have deadlines. Suppose you hand deliver or overnight mail something, making sure to get a receipt and proof of delivery? I would follow up with an email to the admissions office at Towson or wherever your deposit is due. That might buy you a few more days. Also, at any school I'm assuming there's an option to pay online.

Motorcycle, I'm glad to hear you're okay. It must have been terrifying. Your post reminds us that it's all about perspective.

UMSON Fall 2014
I'm very disappointed to hear that Towson singles out older students in a way that sounds discriminatory. That doesn't even sound legal. Let me say a word about Georgetown. It's a great school and their hospital is across the parking lot from their nursing school. I strongly considered applying there but money is a huge factor for me. Some of the prereqs they require can be found online at various schools. I hope you get the answer you want from Maryland.

My science teas were not great, but my overall score was good. I really think they look at the total picture.

UMSON Fall 2014
I got my call today and am admitted provisionally! I want to say that I'm praying for each and every one of you. My plan was always to try again if I didn't make it and to pursue all ways to make it happen. Don't accept no as a final answer!

possible move to MD area
I don't know much about the gs pay scale, but this is a great area to live. It is, however, extremely expensive. I would look at parts of Silver Spring and Olney as possible areas to rent or buy. Lots of government employees live here, so it's possible to live well here on a gs salary. If you are willing to do a longer commute, look at Columbia.
