Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I ordered the Birkenstock Linz Super Grip, but when they arrived in the mail, the toe box was very wide, and they didn't fit me very well. But, I tried on a pair of Brooks Addiction Walkers in a nearby town, and ordered my size in white leather. I'm picking them up tomorrow, and may even buy inserts to give even more arch support. Again, I really appreciate all your suggestions. :)

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Ok - so it looks like the Birkenstock Alpro G500 SGs are discontinued. BUT I just ordered the new generation shoe: the Birkenstock Linz Super Grip in white leather. They have the cork footbed, arch support and add very little height. These were super expensive for nursing school, but I don't care. :) Question: Is there something that nurses spray on their new nursing shoes to make them less porous? I'm thinking of the future, when they may be vomited upon, or c.diff may splattered on them, etc. Thanks!

What reality show do you follow?
If these qualify: "Untold Stories of the ER" and "Dr. G: Medical Examiner".

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Thanks, veggienursenyc. I'm trying for the second pair you mentioned, but 6pm is out of my size (of course!). I just sent an email directly to Birkenstock USA, and hope to hear back soon. I'm wondering if the huge price differences found online means that some are counterfeit(?) Thanks again.

Thanks, Visionary 123 and OneDuckyRN! I'll have a look at Brooks Addiction and Visionary 123, I'm super curious about what shoes you're talking about. :)

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Hi jax4224, If I find a great shoe first, I'll let you know. It is frustrating to find shoes that fit properly, right? I just ordered Barco scrubs, btw, with a large top and large tall bottoms. I've got about a 34" inseam and wear about a size 12 women's. Please keep me posted if you find shoes!

Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?
Hi all, I'm female, about 6'1" barefoot, and want to find the lowest platform/heel nursing student shoes possible. I also have a high arch and do need support. Can anyone recommend a specific (white) shoe? To make things worse, I wear an 11 or 11 1/2, depending on the shoe. Danskos and clog-like shoes are just too tall; I ordered some Sketchers GoWalk 2s online, but they are way too devoid of support for my high arches. I need to be on my feet for 10-ish hour clinicals come this fall. What can I say? I am quite Amazonian. Thanks very much for any input!

What is a Calling to be a nurse?
I always thought that people used the term "a calling" to refer to believing that God steered them toward the profession.

Starting a family during nursing school or after?
I think that deep down, we can *usually* ballpark our own limitations and abilities. I married a wonderful man with his own son and was a supportive, active stepmom in that very troubled child's life for many years. We eventually decided that having our own biological child just wasn't a priority for us. That said, only you know what's best for you, and how much energy, etc. you have to delegate to each part of your life. If you can wait until after nursing school, I sure would, but only you know what's best for you. Good luck! :) I'm starting a BSN program in August, and I know that many of them are moms.

worried about dissection
Also, I wanted to say how very fortunate I was to have the privilege to dissect/learn from human cadavers. The learning experience was absolutely invaluable, and I am very thankful. Good luck with your studies. :)

worried about dissection
Hi veggienursenyc, I, too, was worried about this when I was just starting Human Anatomy, except our cadavers were human, and there were three of them. What I did was ask the professor if a lab assistant could go with me into the cadaver lab, just to show me a body - before I had to do any dissecting. My goal was to take away the "shock factor" that comes with seeing the insides of a cadaver for the first time. If you make yourself do some version of this during a no-pressure time, like after class, with someone guiding you, it will really help. I was quite anxious around the cadavers for about the first three times I saw them; then, my fear evaporated. Just remember, these are remains, and there is no human suffering involved. I hope that this helps! You can do it. :)

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Thanks very much, meib92 and caligirl7! I look forward to (hopefully) being classmates with both of you. And caligirl, I understand the appeal of Chico, and get that things are up in the air right now. I lived in Chico for many years, went to high school and college #1 there, and met my husband there. My dad was a prof at Chico State, and I know that town inside-out (or used to 10 years ago). You will love it there too, if you choose Chico. I am excited for all of us to start on our new adventure of becoming nursing students! I am also somewhat terrified, but that will fade. I feel very fortunate. Let's do this thing!

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Hi Caligirl7, Yes, but I just found out yesterday, so it's *very* fresh news! I would be attending today's orientation, but I volunteer for hospice and always visit my newest patient on Friday afternoons. (I feel like he really needs those visits.) Also, the orientation isn't required for second baccalaureate students. I am looking forward to meeting the students and hate to miss the orientation. I really, really want you to get in. Only if you don't mind me asking, what alternate number are you? I know how torturous the waiting is, believe me. Thinking good thoughts for you!

I'm so old!
I think you're awesome! I'm applying to nursing schools at 40, and my next door neighbor got her RN at age 50+. We've got some perspective and life experience with some age on us. Good luck to you! :)

Applicants to Chico for Fall 2014??
Hi all, I haven't applied to Chico's nursing program, but wanted to chime in because I lived there for most of my life. :) I also got my BA there, and I really miss all the trees, Bidwell Park, the farmers' markets, and the slower pace of life in the summertime. Congrats to the new Chico nursing students!!

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Hi BethChapin, Congratulations on your acceptance to SSU! If I get in as an alternate, I look forward to being in nursing school with you. :) Hey, meib92, No, I haven't heard from them yet, lol. :) I've checked my email exactly 8 million times today, even while I was in statistics class! (And I usually have my phone off during ALL classes.) I hope to be classmates soon!

Yay!!!!!
Yahoo!! Thanks, RunBabyRun! And, congrats again on getting your new job. The job market for new grads in our area is so tough; you must be a hell of a nurse! :)
-
Yay!!!!!
Congrats to you, meib92! Such a huge accomplishment, and a gigantic step toward your goal! :) I have no idea if anyone ever declines at our first school of choice, but if someone does, I'll see you in the fall. Again, congrats!! :)

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Congrats, meib92!! Very awesome, indeed. :) Also congrats to caligirl7! I too am an alternate. #1. I have no idea whether any people typically don't accept. Congrats to all! P.S. Meib92, I couldn't write back to your personal message, because I'm too new here. :)

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Hey all, I emailed a nice lady with the SSU nursing office and she said they're still reviewing applications. I think your earlier estimate of us hearing back by mid-April is right. It seems so far away!!! Good luck to everyone; I'm super nervous and excited. :)

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Hey caligirl7! Congrats on getting acceptance from one of your schools. :) That is great news! Although we hear back soon from SSU, SRJC doesn't notify until June. That means if I don't get into SSU, I'll have to pay my Dominican deposit no matter what. I'll hope the best for us both, and for the other fellow applicants. I really, really want in at SSU, although it's so competitive that I probably won't get in. Ughhh!! Stay positive. :)

Oh, the waiting! I probably won't get in, but not knowing either way is the worst. I really want this! Ugh!

Elementary Statistics for people who aren't good at math
Well, I'm taking stats right now; it's my last prerequisite for nursing school and I'm waiting to hear back from nursing schools right now. I've never been great at math, but not terrible either, and I'm on the A-B border in the class right now. It's getting hairy now, so I may start using the school's free tutoring center. Does your school have free tutoring? If you're decent at English and algebra, I think you'll be fine. For me, it's easier than physiology and anatomy, but challenging, although everyone is different. :) Good luck to you!

Other SSU pre-licensure BSN applicants?
Hi meib92, That's a plus that there were 150 applicants this year! I think it's usually 200ish, according to the SSU site. I also noted on the allnurses SSU posts from last year that people started getting notified around April 8. I'm so impatient! Your stats are extremely good, so I'm betting you will get it. If I get in as well, we will know each other before we know each other, lol. :) Good luck to all! I'm just trying to focus on stats class, volunteering, yoga class, housework, the hubs, etc. until we find out. I am so distracted.
