  1. You are misinformed my good ma'am or sir. Nursing is crazy in demand in the USA right now. Maybe not in your state, but its so insane, we have hospital recruiters coming down to our college from Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona because of the amount of vacancies. There are plently more if you actually seek out nhrsing recruiters, but the average theyre offering is a fulltime equivalent wage, relocation allowance, work visa with all fees paid, but you have to commit to 3 years fulltime equivalent. Work visas for nursing so not take five yeara, the average wage time given is 1.3 years.
  2. Nurses are crazy in demand and getting a visa through a hospital or recruiting agency is no issue, it will take about a year though.
  3. Hi there, I am wondering if anyone has any type of support or similar circumstances around my particular situation. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing obtained from Douglas College in BC Canada and am interested in study or work options in the USA. I did not write the NCLEX but am wondering what the degree equivalency is, or if anyone has done this or had their education evaluated. No idea where to start, or if there are any short term Nursing programs in the USA for holders of bachelor degrees. Thank you
  4. If you have passed the NCLEX, you should have no issues getting licensure within the state. Make sure you submit your education for evaluation asap as it takes 8 weeks to process.
  5. RPN program at stenberg is garbage. the LPN program at stenberg is pretty good from what i hear. i know lots of people that have taken it there. when it comes to online programs and the RPN program at stenberg..take it at an actualy college, not an institution that calls itself stenberg "college" on their business license.
  6. AliMC..do not believe newrpn that is a FAKE account that has been going around posting only positive comments about stenberg college, and ONLY on stenberg college posts/forums. Stenberg has their own marketing department that they use to increase their image and obviously to counter any negative reviews that are posted. If you dont believe me, click on NEWRPNs profile and review the posts..only positives and only for stenberg college..as of right now, stenberg has two profiles they use to make positive reviews: NEWRPN and RPNDAN.. beware of these two accounts. Even if one person were to say it was positive, just self reflect on how many hundreds of negative reviews there are online from different people.
  7. I am at douglas college, i am currently in the diploma program, but will be switching into the degree program in january 2016. there is no difference in terms of main theory courses between diploma and degree, nor will instructors know which student is in which program. The experience is awesome. ive been to douglas college, KPU and stenberg and from what ive learned and seen, douglas college is hands down the best college ive ever been too. all your instructors have graduate education and years of experience. my clinical procedures instructor (which is mandatory but somehow stenberg has it as an "online" thing) is amazing, she has advanced specialties in emergency and high acuity and her thats her area of focus in nursing. you really have to do it to understand what im talking about, its better than KPU..douglas was one of the first schools in BC to offer psych nursing. KPU is very disorganized. i was accepted to year 1 degree (which is not PNUR courses, just your first year associated studies), and was waitlisted #7 for diploma. I was offered diploma 2 weeks before school started and took it, now i am halfway done year 1 of diploma (or 2nd year of degree) and will be transferring into year 3 of degree in january 2016. stenberg is garbage. i went there, all my friends went there, its horrible. i have a friend who graduated with me in dec 2010 and still hasnt found a job, she gave up and went to UFV to pursue a degree in social work it was that bad.
  8. as long as you complete the criminal record check application online and pay the money, you are fine, the criminal record check is sent to douglas college, it will explain this in the letter you received. CPI is crisis prevention intervention...it NEEDS TO BE CPI, not NVCI or any other one, the reason why is because CPI is regulated and ensures certain components and criteria are met, it is also standard in health care. As for the immunizations, you should have a nursing booklet..like an immunizations passport or something, as long as you have the bloodwork paper and the thing from the nruse stating its been administered, you should be fine. the public health nurse i had just wrote directly into my immunizations passport. immunizations are free, the TB skin test is not. 52 dollars is expensive, i paid 23 for mine. are you in diploma, degree or 2nd year direct entry?
  9. also, ask all those LPN graduates how many people either failed or discharged themselves from stenberg, they are notorious for failing people and favouritism prevails over all. everyone i know has to commute to school, dont let the commuting discourage you from applying to an actual GOVERNMENT REGULATED SCHOOL that has EQA designation. you will love it. also, the education is soo much cheaper and way better. Also, working while attending school isnt realistic..unless you are working a night shift where you can devote all your time to studying. people underestimate the intensity of an RPN program. if you dont believe me then check this out, stenberg college has been sued for asking their instructors in the RPN program to do/say/teach stuff OUTSIDE THEIR SCOPE OF PRACTICE, which is ILLEGAL!!: Texas man sues Canadian college for breach of contract - Southeast Texas RecordSoutheast Texas Record shady school, unqualified instructors, over priced, not government regulated and unethical practices. avoid this place..LIKE THE PLAGUE
  10. the quality of education being delivered between douglas and stenberg is night and day, douglas is way better, more affordable, better placements, better job prospects. to answer you specific question, there is NO CHANCE IN HELL you will get a job working at inpatient psychiatry as an RPN unless you have experience..thats the big one, many people have registration, and its NOT just about having registration, especially when working in clinical settings. Bachelors degree in psychiatric nursing is becoming the new standard entry to practice because RPNs are considered first contact health care employees and have an increased scope of practice as of APRIL 2014. so the bachelors is the new entry to practice for many areas and the diploma program will eventually be phased out in the next few years.
  11. ok, im going to lay some serious knowledge on you. i went to stenberg for the community support worker, AVOID THIS SCHOOL LIKE THE PLAGUE..DISGUSTING QUALITY OF EDUCATION DELIVERED, OVERPRICED, NOT WORTH THE DRAMA, UNQUALIFIED TEACHERS WITH NO MASTERS DEGREES. They only care about your money, and nothing else. This school does not have a good reputation amongst employers as well as the diploma in psychiatric nursing is always last pick for new hires at fraser health. The psychaitric nursing diploma program may be all online, but it is more than double the price from douglas college, as well as the hands on experience is only during your clinical,..where you are expected to know and perform this stuff before even entering. Also, stenberg has a difficult time finding placements for their psych program because nobody wants them..thats the honest truth. I am currently a psychiatric nursing student at douglas college, ashamed, i almost took it at stenberg because i was desperate to get in, THANK YOU JEBUS I DIDNT GET IN..the school is a disgrace, im ashamed i even went there for my support worker program.
  12. Also, they cannot charge you for immunizations. the only ones they can charge you, that are not covered under MSP is the tuberculosis skin tes, tthey charge you a nursing fee for the RN administering it to you, its around 50 dollars or so, and these appointments you need to take CPI as early as you can, it fills up fast at douglas, and the schedule for nursing students at douglas taking this course is less than ideal.
  13. if you call the faculty, then they will likely give you an extension, not too long though. As long as you can provide proof of the first record of immunizations, then they will have to follow up with you as the immunizations become due, as there is waiting periods. As for the vaccinations, if you do not know which ones you have, your doctor will order a lab requisition and blood test you, then he will determine which vaccines you have..YOU MUST TAKE THIS PAPERWORK WITH YOU, you have to provide proof of immunizations, a doctors signature is good enough for entrance to the program, but you need to provide proof of immunizations while on site at clinicals otherwise they can send you home. You wont be starting actual PNUR clinicals in your first semester, but you will in the second and you need to carry around a binder/dossier with proof of everything that the college asks you to submit.
  14. Hey nicolimuffin (cool name by the way), the answer is NO. they do not care, nor will they know ..so long as the information is completely filled out, you are fine. in the case of my stuff, i had my doctor complete my physical examination and do a lab requisition for blood work. for the vaccinations i needed, i had my doctor give them to me and for the vaccines he didnt have, i went to a public health nurse. usually there is a month or so wait for certain vaccines through public health, but i kind of spinned off the nursing thing and the public health nurse was happy cause im a guy, so she rushed me in the next day haha. it will not block you from getting accepted, but it might be rather difficult to find a walk in doctor who will complete the entire form, seeing as usually it needs to be done by someone whos known you for a long time, either way, as long as its filled out, your golden. Dressage girly, i ALMOST took it with K.T, i didnt because i couldnt stand the thought of a 4 hour class once a week. any more questions people? im on a role :)
  15. dressage girly, are you taking phil 3125 online with E.S as your prof?
  16. also, for all those people who were given offers for both the diploma and degree..this is a trick question..unless you are offered 2nd year direct entry, then take the diploma. the reason being is that degree is one year difference ..you dont actually start the program until semester 3..year one of the degree is associated studies courses. so..unless you are specifically asked if you want 2nd year direct entry, TAKE THE DIPLOMA.also, if you take the diploma, you can transfer into the degree after one year, and still graduate with your class..but with a degree..even though pay difference, etc. equals no difference once you have your registration to practice as a psychiatric nurse
  17. the waitlist can move FAIRLY QUICKLY..many people do not accept, cannot pay, cannot provide proof of immunizations, or get a clear crim record check (more thorough than normal ones) and as such, they just move onto the next applicant. but the be honest, if you are past waitlist number 15, your probably out of luck. once you receive your acceptance in the mail, you have an extremely short amount of time to provide proof of everything, so you guys need to be on the ball. the program is awesome, these people in your CONCEPTS class will be in your classes every semester for the next 3 years too, so dont be douche baggy on your first day because bad impressions LAST.
  18. if you have taken bio 1103 and bio 1203 , this the first year of studying should be very basic..be warned, there is a CRAZY amount of reading you must do and you MUST keep on top of the readings if you expect to pass..also, when you buy the textbooks...BUY THE HARD COPY TEXT BOOKS NO MATTER WHAT TELL YOU (they will usually give you 20 percent off if you buy ALL textbooks at once via electronic PDF..NOT WORTH IT..IT SUCKS). the program is awesome. the first year is not necessarily learning about mental disorders, but moreso the nursing process and how to assess patients and basic interventions that you would complete. the first year courses for PNUR are: therapeutic relations 1, clinical procedures 1, pnur concepts 1_ therapeutic relations you are video and audio recorded, this is MANDATORY and you will be doing this every semester, every year of the PNUR program and is NON negotiable. the clinical procedures class teaches you all the hands on nursing stuff you will be utilizing in the hospital. the nursing concepts 1 class teaches you all theory you will be tested on for the actual CRPNBC exam and is your main nursing class
  19. hey guys, i actually replied to all of your questions about 4 days ago, but for some reason it did not send and as a result, this forum was never updated with my reply, so here i go again: i am in the diploma program, and am switching into the degree by january 2016, seeing as i have all the associated studies courses. in terms of work load, there is NO difference between psychiatric diploma and degree students. we all have to take the same nursing theory courses that the CRPNBC examines you on. The difference is about 3-4 courses, of which, 2 of them are electives (approximately). in other words, once you start your PNUR program, you will not know which students are in the diploma and which are in the degree unless you ask them specifically. instructors do not care either. almost everyone in the diploma has a degree and as such, chose not to pursue the bachelors as they already had a majority of the associated studies regardless.
  20. Hey guys, Im in the diploma program (switching to degree program while in the program) and have finished semester 1/3 of the PNUR program, if you have any questions, ask away..i can let you all know what to do/expect for your first year in the nursing program. Also, the cut off for diploma is usually higher than degrees..most people applying into the diploma already have degrees.. the degree students usually have the 1 year certificate in academic foundations..generally the cut off points for the PNUR program in general is around 11 points or so. 17 points is a guaranteed seat.
  21. You cannot take PHIL 3125 outside of the RPN program, it is limited enrollment and the college will not allow you to register for it if you are not an RPN student. As for the Program, if you did not apply for "2nd year direct entry" and have completed the entire first year (with the exception of PHIL 3125), you will still have to wait an entire year before you start year 2, the reason being is they assign you in cohorts once you reach year 2 (for clinical procedures and therapeutic relations), so unless you were accepted as a 2nd year direct entry student, you will still need to wait it out. I am starting 2nd year in JAN. I spoke with the registrar and college department about ALL this information already haha.
  22. haha. i guess since were both in the diploma program we will both have the same class schedule and everything. i too am in the fleetwood area and am driving there all days, ...will unfortunately be port manning it as well. maybe if things work out haha. r u going to orientation on jan 5th?
  23. that sucks =/ i live in surrey, so i would just take the portman and would be there in maybe 20 minutes or less...its best if you drive..seeing as you are going to have to when you start your clinicals.. fiba, are you in the diploma or degree? i was offered the diploma program last minute, after already enrolling in the degree
  24. Stenberg does not have a waitlisting program..per say. they offer it to people who can pay. if someone is unable to secure funding, then they are dropped and they offer it to the next person who is interested, unlike public colleges where you are waitlisted according to your overall cumulitive grading, etc. stenberg is a garbage school, they are last pick for fraser health hires and not worth the 45 grand you have to shell out to have the "privalege" of learning by yourself...i regret ever going there. the reason why there is soooo much competition for the next intake is because the diploma program is going to be discontinued very very soon as a bachelors is becoming the new standard for entry to practice due to the increased scope of practice that was awarded to RPN's a few months ago. i regret ever going there...it did its job, but i wasnt going to school for a program that required me to pass a registration exam with a major regulatory body.
  25. I also am done all of first year. I emailed the admission person tonite asking If I can just start 2nd year in jan or of there is an applicatiom process I have to go though.
