  1. Hello everyone. I am an RN with 22 years of experience. I am looking to transition to work in a VA facility. I would like to know how does the pension plan work in a VA? do I work a certain number of years? Any input is appreciated. thank you
  2. I have worked in a hospital environment for over 15 years. I recently got an offer to work at a family medicine center nearby. I am nervous and excited at the same time. Its 5 days a week, with no holidays and weekends as opposed to 12 hour shifts in the hospital. Iam wondering those who have made this transition are you happy with this change? And what's a typical day at this type of outpatient center? thanks for all your input.
  3. its a peds unit, and used to be super busy about 10-15 years back. but overall census has been low in the hospital for the last 5 years.
  4. We recently merged with another health system, and the fear for most staff in the entire hospital is what will happen now? will there be layoffs, or shutdown, or will they find ways to improve? (which is what they say now) But I was looking for a change for a while, and took the offer for the transfer. Its a smaller unit, because its specialized, and its 12 hours, which is what i wanted. But the census has been low, maybe 7-8 patients, sometimes one. This has been going on for years though. But no signs of closure. I just get discouraged listening to such rumors, but would like to be prepared in case it happens.
  5. I applied and got accepted for a transfer to another unit and I hear rumors from some staff RNs and managers that the unit may close. I asked the DON of this unit if its true and she said " No way..NOt at all. In fact we have plans to expand it" So I dont know who to believe? What are the signs that a unit may close? should I just go ahead and join my new unit and hope for the best? I would appreciate everyone's input.
  6. Just wanted to know everyones input on this. I got a transfer on a new unit in my hospital, and my manager in my current unit wants me to help her out until they find a replacement. This will effect my orientation and timings in my new unit. Can I say no or am i obligated to help her? I really wanted to be out of that unit which is why I asked for a transfer.
  7. Thanks! Actually I was at that point where I wanted to go straight to the facility and give them my resume, because nobody ever responds. But I just thought of emailing the DON, and guess what??she replied back with an interview date too!! Now Iam nervous..and excited. I dont know whether I should mention that I applied many times. was unsuccessful and finally emailed the DON.
  8. I just send over a resume to the DON, because I did not get any response from the recruiter by applying online. I am hoping this way at least I will get noticed, and improve my chances of getting hired.
  9. I sent my resume and cover letter recently to a director of nursing in a rehab facility. She wrote back saying she sent it to her manager who will call me for an interview. It's been 3 days since that mail. How long should I wait to make a follow up call or mail? I really want this job..but don't want to be pushy.. Any feedback is appreciated.
  10. That's interesting. It's the same problems I encountered with the recruiter. I think they have issues there. Someone told me she got a job by constantly calling and harassing them.
  11. any luck yet getting a job in JFK? If so, please provide any helpful tips.
  12. They mentioned the job description during my interview but not in great detail. They did not talk about everyday routine. But at the time I was not offered the job, perhaps that is why. I was also wondering if the benefits are the same as the rest of the employees in the company.
  13. i recently got a offer to work as a occupational health nurse at a nearby USPS. I don't have experience in this field. Can anyone shed some light as to how work there would be like? Thanks in advance !
  14. Thank you nurse Beth. I was debating over this for quite some time. Because I did not want to postpone the vacation since it also involved visiting a sick family member. So I think they will understand that.
  15. Unfortunately in our institution there is no autonomy..we basically just put in piccs and change dressings, because that is what is expected. Having my crni holds no value. So that is why I wonder what am I doing with my crni..
  16. I wanted input from anyone who is CRNI and or VACC certified. Is it beneficial to have both? Right now Iam CRNI but I dont see any benefits from it. We place piccs and do followup care. We dont administer any infusions. So Iam thinking to get VACC certified instead.
  17. just sent you a PM..
  18. Hi I was wondering what is everyone's hospital policy or thoughts on picc lines being placed on a patient with a pacemaker on one side and defibrillator on the other side of the chest. Just had a patient with that scenario. But supposedly the pacemaker was old and not functioning. I recommended patient go to radiology for the picc. Any comments? Thanks
  19. I have been trying to get in there for couple of years, and even landed an interview. but they hired someone within the facility. The only reason I tried is because it is only 3 miles from my house. The recruiter never calls back if you leave a voice message or reply any email you send. I have heard from other people that it is not a great place to work. But i guess it depends on individual experience.
  20. Thanks. What about if you don't know the manager's name? Should I call up the unit and ask?
  21. I have been applying the usual method of going online and submitting application after application and waiting. The HR is of no help, says it's up to the nurse manager, but how can I get noticed by the nurse manager, especially if I don't know the nurse manager? Anyone please offer any helpful tips!! Thanks.
  22. Iam interested in taking the ACLS and PALS course even though I don't work in the critical care area. While searching for courses online, I noticed there is a website http://www.ACLScertification.com where the course is offered 100 percent online with no hands on skills test. Has anyone tried this and is it authentic? Or is it better to go with AHA?
  23. How does everyone insert PICCs ? One person or two person I.e with an assistant. In our hospital we work with two person and it proves to be more productive and safer.
  24. How many IR nurses do you have in your dept? In our hospital there are only two. it is a 280 bed hospital. I dont know how they manage to tell you the truth.
  25. Why do you think it is one of the best nursing positions out there? I ask because I am interested in joining the dialysis field..but when I hear of the negatives am not sure at times.
