I come from a pediatric, psych, and home care background, about 15 years worth. I was out of work for many years and then started subbing Feb 2014. Love it. I decided to take a part time school nurse position at another high school this year. I work 2 days a week, one day by myself and the other day with my co-nurse. The school is only starting it's third year. I just finished my second week and I am overwhelmed. Our students come from many different schools since we are a charter school. I am doing OK from a clinical standpoint. I love the students and my fellow nurse. But, I am lost in regards to the process with the paperwork, what is needed, where it goes, what to do with it, etc. As a sub, I didn't deal with any of this usually. Just trying to figure out how to follow up with staff, etc is a challenge. We are not electronic (my sub schools are) and half the time I am struggling through paperwork to get info on a new freshman. I'm just wondering if something similar has happened to you when you first became a school nurse and any suggestions?
  3. You said you worked in acute care, but you didn't mention if you worked in pediatrics. I worked inpatient acute care pedi and did home care pedi for a lot of years...took a few years off...and just started working as a sub school nurse in Feb. There is definitely a learning curve I have found; school nursing is unique, but I think you seem to have a lot of experience. I would think it would be important to ask to shadow one of their school nurses for a day, or even a half day.....
  4. Hi everyone, I have been out of the nursing profession for 5 years. I have done various types of nursing, but I consider myself a pediatric nurse and worked in an inpatient setting for about 9 years and also did 2 years of pedi home care. I will be interviewing for sub positions (I have never worked as a school nurse) and I am looking for suggestions on which school nursing topics I should brush up on and the best resources for doing so. For example, I have little to no knowledge of insulin pumps as we rarely saw them inpatient. Thanks so much!!
