Anyone with experience caring for elderly holocaust survivors?
Thanks so much for all of your advice! I really appreciate it, especially the advice about contacting a local rabbi. We got someone to come visit her from a local Jewish community center and she's been much more stable since. It is amazing to me how much anxiety level can influence a person's physical health. Good teaching lesson.

Anyone with experience caring for elderly holocaust survivors?
I only knew because of the tattoo on her arm. I asked about it's significance and she told me flat out. We're not in a psych setting, I have no psych experience. It's a med-surg unit so I'm a fish out of water here.

Anyone with experience caring for elderly holocaust survivors?
Thanks for replying! We're on a Med-Surg unit and I have no psych experience, which is why it has been so tough. She's been here a while and having a really difficult time in an institutional setting. That makes sense to me and I feel for her. She has episodes of intense anxiety understandably. Her object of significance is a necklace, a Hamsa, and so far that is the main way we've been able to get her to relax when she panics. Basically, pointing out her Hamsa and showing her it is right there and telling her that it is here to protect her, etc. Glad to know that I wasn't doing her any harm in encouraging her to rely on it. Like I said I have no psych experience and it seemed to help. I guess I was just worried about doing further harm since I have zero experience dealing with patients who have experienced such trauma and I have little experience nursing anyway. And, yeah, protecting her from harm is the main goal. Like I said her anxiety attacks are extreme- like real fight or flight mode and she's not in good shape physically.

Anyone with experience caring for elderly holocaust survivors?
Hi everyone, I am looking for help... specifically anyone who has experience caring for elderly Holocaust survivors. It is my first time caring for a Holocaust survivor and it has been challenging. I've been doing a lot of literature reviews, which have offered a lot of insight into managing her care and unique needs given the past trauma she has experienced, but am hoping to hear from someone who has experience and can give some advice. So far, I've found that covering my scrubs with a sweater helps a bit as she is terrified by uniforms. Also, she has an object of significance and I've encouraged her to keep it close since it seems to ease her anxiety so much but I wonder if encouraging her to rely on an object is really a good idea? Any input would be really appreciated!

Summer 2014 - part-time Rutgers (UMDNJ)
Congrats to you baileyzt!!! I wish I knew someone in the nursing program there so I could put you in touch but I only know a few med students. Sorry you're having trouble getting the info you need. Jenn- which class are you having a hard time finding?

SUNY Downstate Accelerated BSN Program 2014-2015
I'm still waiting. I thought for sure I would get a wait list or rejection letter quickly since my status changed to that return to admissions app complete thing 3 weeks ago. I'm thinking they sent out their first round and are waiting to see how many people confirm their acceptances before figuring out to do. But who knows. We might have to wait a while.

It's possible if we don't get in we could work on making our apps stronger and apply again next time around I guess?

I was missing BSL too but am enrolled in a course now. Hmm. That kind of makes me worry. I'm going to call them just to put my mind at ease. I also applied to SUNY Downstate and NYU but am still waiting to hear back from both. I'd also like to know how many others applied to the part-time program. I'd love to get in since I could keep working but I know it's a competitive program...

Hi Jenn2432! I also applied and am waiting to see what happens. Nervous, too. Did you apply to any other schools? Also, did you hear anything so far... like even a confirmation that they received your app? I got an email from NursingCAS saying they forwarded everything to Rutgers but nothing directly from Rutgers and that is making me super nervous. Maybe I should try to call or email them. Anyway, good luck to you!

Same... File Return to Admissions after Comm. Rev. So I guess the committee looked at it again, which is both exciting and terrifying. Terrific.

NYU Fall 2014 ABSN
Agsetlur- At the information session I went to they said that so long as the vast majority of your stuff is in by the priority deadline (like if they are just waiting on one letter of reference but already have your transcripts and completed app) then it won't make a difference.

NYU Fall 2014 ABSN
Morganw1- At the information session I attended, we were told that priority or regular makes no difference to them. Apparently, you might just hear back a little later if you submit April 1 rather than March 1. But no, they said they do not look down on later submissions.

Many congratulations to all of you who got in!!!! You must all be so excited!!! Fingers crossed that I get to join you guys. Laurenbear, quick question. Your sex educator/purchasing associate experience sounds really interesting. Are you by any chance considering pursuing a midwifery or women's health specialty? Whatever you wind up choosing as your specialty, I'm sure you'll make good use of the skills you developed in that position.

NYU Fall 2014 ABSN
Whoops! My post above was replying to aellenb1. But yeah, everyone should check out C.A.R.E if they want. Also, did you all submit official TEAS to NYU? I guess I should even though they don't seem to require it?

Depending on where you live, I'd encourage you to check out the C.A.R.E program at Mount Sinai. Basically, you volunteer in the Emergency Department at Mount Sinai and assist unaccompanied patients in a variety of different ways. It isn't shadowing but you end up seeing a lot. Its great because you can work pretty much any time between 9am-12:30am Monday-Sunday and shifts vary from 2-7 hours long. Could be a great opportunity to get some hospital experience given your schedule. I know you wrote this post a long time ago but thought I'd respond just in case you're still looking for hospital opportunities.

SUNY Downstate Accelerated BSN Program 2014-2015
I think you have a really good chance at getting in, Nicole616, especially with such a high GPA. From the few people I know who got it, most had high GPAs and so-so to good TEAS. One person I know only scored a 78% on the math.

Also, one of my references submitted his rec. at the last minute. That could also be it. 2 recommendations is required, yes?

Mordydavid- I think you're right. I noticed it took them almost 4 days to process my application fee, which I submitted on the 9th. So that could be what held up my app. Though it is now checked off. I'm going to touch base with them, or try to, just to be sure.

futureRN2k- mine says the same. And has been stuck on that for a while. I submitted much later than the others, on Jan 7th. I haven't gotten an email saying that I need to resubmit anything yet. But I'm going to try again to get in touch with someone at SUNY just to be sure. It could just be that we submitted ours later so it will take more time.

SUNY Downstate Accelerated BSN Program 2014-2015
According the posts here from last year's cycle, they start sending out notifications in early March. So... still a ways to go for us unfortunately.

SUNY Downstate Accelerated BSN Program 2014-2015
My checklist also changed just like yours. I checked my status via the other site (the one I used to submit) and it says "application submitted" then below that "incomplete review". I submitted on Jan 6th. So I think I just have to give them some time and wait it out. Supposedly, if anything is missing, they will contact us via email. Again, good luck to everyone!

If it helps at all, my friend is in med school at suny upstate in syracuse and spent some time taking her pre-reqs at Binghamton and she really liked the school! She is also a city girl and extremely wary of the cold weather. Since you would only be there for around a year and a half, why not? Everyone is different though. And, of course, Brooklyn has it's own significant advantages. Good luck to you!

Thanks! I figured they would be getting a ton of submissions since we're getting close to the deadline. I was finally able to get in touch with someone at the admissions office and was given the same technical difficulties answer. Makes sense.
