  1. The snow will likely be the biggest shock for you! Haha! I'm not in the Rochester area, so I can't really comment about the city itself, but I do like perusing the citydata website. It is a website where you can read/discuss about specific cities and get some great answers and data back, usually from residents. Rochester area Forum - Relocation, Moving, General and Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum Rochester, New York (NY) profile: population, maps, real estate, averages, homes, statistics, relocation, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, moving, houses, news, sex offenders I will comment that some of Upstate New York has the prettiest country sides I've seen; lovely rolling hills with lakes dotted between. Upstate is nice in the warmer months, but winter is loooong and can sometimes be pretty brutal. I will mention (and I mean no disrespect), my bus trip through Niagara, Buffalo, and Rochester - Rochester seemed the 'nicest' looking. I have entertained the idea of relocating there, too. But I have family in Canada, so Syracuse is closer.
  2. Oooh, I must have mistakenly read the RPN to RN Bridge from the college website? Or they just mean RN to Canadian nurse? Or they mean you have to complete the bridge in addition to the RPN program? Haha, I'm slightly confused. Here are the sites I found (these are legitimate colleges in Ontario): Bridging for Internationally Educated Nurses Certificate | Continuing Education | Mohawk College Bridging for Internationally Educated Nurses (BIEN) | Fanshawe College Thanks for the links, JustBeachy! Great resources. Just to add, I hold dual citizenship. So I am legally able to work in both countries, no problem besides the actual recognition of license.
  3. I would assume it would have to be at the discretion of the BON, but there are Bridging programs in Canada. Looks like another year of courses, if I'm interested. Is the scope different in that RPNs actually make treatment plans/nursing diagnoses?
  4. I figured as much. I do have some Canadian college courses (Math, Chem, Bio, Developmental Psych, Ethics) however, they are about 10 years old now. Do you know how long or how many courses where needed for most people?
  5. NY State LPNs make $35915 starting and I believe somewhere around 44000 is the max. That doesn't include shift differential or Over Time. Also, they do have a 'downstate' adjustment giving people who work closer to NYC more money. Other non-state positions seem to sit from $13 - $17/hr. I'm assuming $19/hr is the average for Upstate NY. Not too bad considering the cost of living is cheaper than some other areas. But as always - never enough! Hahaha!
  6. Hello! I just wanted to share the good news! I am officially an LPN! YAY! It was posted on my states Office of Professions website yesterday (I also ordered the Unofficial Results from PearsonVue and it said I 'passed'). I am excited and a little nervous all at the same time because it marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I also wanted to provide words of encouragement to current students, or some who are studying for the NCLEX. Focus on understanding what can hurt your patient and how to avoid or prevent that, also, remember your ABCs! This tends to go hand in hand with avoidance of patient harm. I found a good resource on this website that outlined a lot of information for quick review so please use this site proactively! There are fellow nurses who are willing to help and have already taken extra time to provide some resources - don't let it go to waste. All the student nurses, you can do it! Good luck! I do have a question I'm hoping some 'Canamericans' may be able to shed some light on. I was born and raised in Canada but family circumstances had me come to the US where I have completed my LPN. I was wondering how easy it might have been for others to transfer their American license to Canada. I have family in Canada and would like to work in Canada if I desire. My program did not have individual classes and was 11 months long. I know Ontario's RPN program is 2 years so I'm assuming I may be required to take more courses to be considered. Do they count any work experience in your favor? Thanks in advance!
  7. My program is 11 months (Feb start to Jan), with approximately a couple weeks of break time here and there. It is M-F 8-3 with labs two days a week. I believe clinical is going to be two days a week once they start later in the year (most likely replacing labs?). Pretty intensive program, but not unattainable.
  8. Wow, it has certainly been a busy few weeks for me! Two weeks ago I completed the TEASV, the following day I was interviewed, and the following Monday I was in classes. Shout-out to anyone in Central New York area who may be in a LPN Program as well! My teacher shares some great practical/real life experience which makes class discussions interesting. So far, the course has a lot of independent reading but we do start lab next week! I'm nervous but excited. Wish me luck! I feel like I will need it. Questions for LPN's: When you were completing your program, what aspects did you find most challenging? What did you enjoy the most? I also wanted to send out encouragement! If you put the effort in, you will be successful!
